A common way to fish for carp in North America is the sliding float. Nigel Griffin of EuroTackle is the foremost proponent of this method in NA and has taught it to many others in the video Carping in America. The idea is to fish for carp off the bottom using a waggler type float. A technique known as the lift bite is employed. It is set up as follows:
- Place a bobber stop, a stop bead, and then large waggler (a float that is long and slim with a bulb on the bottom. It has an eye on the bottom end where you put the line.) on the line. Tie the hook, size 8 to 4, directly on the line and place a bulk of weight (enough to sink the float properly) 18 inches above the hook saving one medium shot as the telltale. Place this last shot 4 inches from the hook.
- Cast into the water you are fishing. Use no bait at this time. Adjust the bobber stop until the float does not sink and then fine tune it. At this point the bait will be on the bottom with 4 inches of leader.
- Chum the area you just plumbed and fish it with the float and bait. When the fish picks up your bait, the float will lift up exposing the shaft of the float. The fish has the hook in his mouth, so strike. A very sensitive method.
