  1. Thanks for checking, Paul. The rep at St. Croix's Park Falls store told me the rods would be available in early to mid-October, but I would suspect that the timeline you were given is more accurate.--Frank
  2. Dan--My list is not one of complaints, nor am I implying that the event wasn't set up well. And my intention is not to nit-pick. I simply made suggestions that, in my mind, would improve the tournament; and, in doing so, I am hopefully encouraging others to comment substantively, as you did. It's Larry's tournament. He can do whatever he wishes with the suggestions and take them with whatever grain of salt he prefers. If next year's event is exactly the same as this year's, so be it. I'll still be in it. I truly believe that encouraging suggestions could provide some useful food for thought. I appreciate your opinions about overnight fishing and the cost of the tournament. I just don't agree with them, just as you may not agree with mine. But that doesn't matter. It's Larry's call. It's not a contest about who is right or who is picky or who is loyal; it's a forum for discussion--hopefully, meaningful discussion.--Frank
  3. Good point, Larry. More help always makes things easier. However, my suggestions are all strategic; they have nothing to do with the logistics of extra help. (Well, maybe the documents (entries, publicity, etc.) would benefit from extra help).
  4. Here's an 11th suggestion about the tourney, just for you and your broken heart (maybe Michigan organizers will consider this also ): 11. If someone has to leave the tournament early, another competitor may not take his peg or use his leftover bait.
  5. Sorry, Carpseeker, my post is intended to supplement, not supplant, the fine work that tourney organizers demonstrate. Your post is an expected response, but I was hoping that perhaps, just maybe, more meaningful ideas with real substance might be forthcoming.
  6. TEN SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE ILLINOIS CARP CHAMPIONSHIPS Whether or not it is solicited and having had the chance to reflect on the recent tournament, I offer my suggestions for future Fighting Roughfish Illinois Carp Championships. Just my 2¢. I look forward to seeing other suggestions.—Frank I think Lee Young has it right, and I would, therefore, suggest a format that emulates the Wisconsin Carp Championships: 1. Change the format to two ten hour days during daylight hours. Beginning and ending times would be subject to the organizer, but 8 to 6 on the first day and 6 to 4 on the second day might work well. 2. I would prefer an individual event, but, cognizant of the limited bank space, I see why a team event was scheduled. 3. Increase the entry fee to make the tournament more enticing. 4. Schedule a new peg draw at the beginning of the 2nd day to eliminate some of the peg advantages (note that most of the winners this year were at or near an end peg). 5. The overnight session was fine, but I saw inconsistencies in work ethic. Some worked hard all night, some slept through it, and some partied. I have no problem with any of those activities, but I think two ten-hour days would result in a more consistent outcome (and more fish caught). 6. Ask the city fathers to allow the park to be used for camping overnight for those who wish to stay at Lowell Park and save a few bucks. 7. With potential for greater use of hotels, bars, and restaurants in the evening hours due to the daytime sessions, ask the city fathers for more “seed-money” to either increase the pot or to better cover the organizer’s costs. 8. Despite the small fish and relatively low numbers this year, Lowell Park is a beautiful venue. If Lowell Park remains as the venue, increase the distance between pegs. 9. With two ten hour days, the family event would be over on Sunday earlier than the “pro” event . The awards ceremony for the CAG anglers could be held at Lowell Park and in closer proximity, time-wise and location-wise, to the actual fishing. 10. Make sure any literature, entry forms, and rules are free of typographical errors, misspellings, and grammatical miscues. Carp anglers already have enough negative public perceptions to overcome. This is not intended to detract from or criticize a wonderful first time event (kudos to Larry K.), but rather to make suggestions for improvement should there be an interest in continuing the Illinois Carp Championships. Good luck.
  7. I was hoping that Paul at Wacker Bait could order one for me, but I'm not sure he's an authorized St. Croix dealer.
  8. For anyone interested in those St. Croix Avid Carp Rods that Lee was showcasing this past weekend, I checked with the St. Croix reps in Park Falls, WI, and they indicated that the rods should be available by early October. However, I think you may be able to make orders at St. Croix retailers now.
  9. We made all kinds of "smaller fish" adjustments and used every flavor of pips on tiny hooks, all to no avail. I should have made some skypod adjustments to address the heavy current, but, alas, I couldn't take my skypod to the tournament because the bag for it fell apart and my trusted carp bait and tackle shop hasn't even ordered a new one yet. Yeah, that's it. Blame the blank session on the lack of a skypod bag.
  10. That's great, Cory. The only problem is that the netboys took home just as much $$ as your team.
  11. Big congrats to the winners in a very competitive tournament. Thanks to Larry K. for his organizational efforts and to Eric G. and Lee Y. for their stewarding skills and encouraging words. Special kudos to the good will and humor shown by all contestants throughout the 26 hours. I will carry special "memories" of Polish serenades, 2:30 a.m. karaoke bars, Juan's comparisons about amateur and "pro" competitions, and Paul S's 2:00 a.m. fish that he probably doesn't remember . In my own best interest, I probably shouldn't draw attention to the fact that peg #9 is absent in the standings (my peg). However, in the interest of full disclosure, I am compelled to report that my teammate and I caught no fish (none, 0, zilch) at peg #9. Still a good time! --Frank
  12. Cory--The peg draw is NOT at Lowell Park. It is at 7:00 a.m. at Page Park Pavilion near the high school in Dixon.
  13. I'm sure a fair portion of that 5 grand remained in Indiana after the events, Jim. Plus, there are those of us not on that list who have left a few entry/bait/tackle dollars in Hoosierland.
  14. It's an impressive list of veteran, seasoned competitors. Good luck to all!--Frank
  15. This post serves as confirmation that Mike Olinger and Frank Rink will participate in The Fighting Roughfish's Illinois Carp Championship.
  16. Thank you, Illinois State Chair Larry, for your efforts to get the word out and to back that word with positive results! Congrats to Cory, Mike, and the Chione boys for their high placement on the leaderboard. I didn't realize there were 48 participants, so the CAG/MCAA members did well, placing three in the top five!--Frank
  17. That would be good, but 2008 was before the Chione boys were old enough to stay at a swim all night.
  18. Sorry you can't make it, Marcin Nobody, evidently, wants to take a manager's shift. It doesn't matter that much anyway. The Chione boys will bivvy up all night to reserve a prime swim and show all of us how it's done.
  19. It's not a contest. I just thought I'd help out a little. I just noticed I left the balance due stuff out. Maybe you can write that info. on the back. It looks as if the field is shaping up nicely. Thanks for organizing this, Larry.--Frank
  20. Larry--Please count me in for the Montgomery Derby. --Frank Marcin--The map shows where the 6 a.m. sign up location has been for the past several years.
