  1. Contact with a FFing carper

I just made contact with a fellow who fly fishes for carp here in Tennessee. We are planning on getting together this year to put some gold in the net by using the skinny stick. Stand by for photos and all the details!
  2. Sharp hooks??

How important is it to sharpening your hooks when fishing for one bite a day or up to 3 bites on a outstanding day?
  3. Simple anti-tangle technique

Prepping for the FFF, and carpin in general, I was continually frustrated driving to a swim, going through the woods, etc. and getting my rods tangled; whether in the car or walking to the swim...........I don't like putting my hooks off my method feeders to the hook holders, or line guides on the rods-it damages the hook point, bends the shrink tubing and puts pressure on the line at the rod tip-sooooooooo, I tried a simple, simple thought-I looked for little nylon bags to cover the hooks, but after not finding any, I used zip-lock sandwich bags-simply placed my method feeder/hair rig in the bag and zip-lock....no tangles, no hooked on brush, etc.!!!......worked well hauling gear for the FFF!!
  4. Carp Fishing Korea and others

I recalled a video about carp fishing with the fly rod in Korea. I did a search and came up with a number of links. This one is my favorite. The background music is worth the whole eight minute video. Note the reels in the water to cool the drag- shows how a carp can run! Also, there is a fellow fishing from the bank in the background of a couple of scenes. Enjoy as I always like the action and the music. Note the crowded highway along the river. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=carp+fishing+Korea&view=detail&mid=71EE3FEDA506CD167EF771EE3FEDA506CD167EF7&FORM=VIRE
  5. FFF Primer

Hi all!!! To echo Frank's call to participate in the 2018 FFF, I took the liberty to perform a pre- FFF primer, last night to show how easy it is!..........so........here's a simple step-by step process; 1. Wake/Stay up 2. Check the local time (starts at midnight!) 3. Drink (insert here- victory coffee, tea, juice, water, etc, but don't drink and drive) 4. Dress appropriately 5. Proceed to the local carp venue which contains un-frozen (non-frozen for the North zone anglers ) with appropriate carp fishing gear- pole, reel, line, hook, bait 6. Proceed to insert line/bait into carp venue 7. Reel in carp 8. Obtain photo of you and carp, preferably a time stamp on your picture 9. Release carp 10. Rebait and fish; repeat steps 6-9 over and over until 11:59pm January 2nd 11. Record and send in your photos on the thread Frank has set up ( thanks Frank and CAG for having this!!) 12. Follow these modified steps 1. Thank your uber drivers 2. Dress appropriately for a good nights sleep 3. Drink (see above) 4. Check the local time 5. Fall asleep By following this simple 17 steps on January 1st 2018, you too will enjoy the comaraderie of fellow CAG members as we start off what will be the best carpin year of all!! I followed these steps exactly, and low and behold.......... I was already awake. The local time was 11:40pm December 2, 2017. I drank one swig of tea. I dressed appropriately. (these I found were all easy steps) I proceeded (with the assistance of fellow CAG member and wife) to be dropped off at my venue....(it isn't safe to leave the car there). The water was un-frozen. I proceeded to place my terminal tackle into the water. I caught carp at 11:50pm 4-4lbr; 12:10am 3-0lbr; 12:21am 3lb 4oz, and this 4lb 8oz at 1:00am-thats my BIG FOUR FFF fish. Then I enlisted the local uber driver (my son and fellow CAG member) to retrieve me from the venue. I followed the modified steps and was asleep by 2:00am and now back to work at 6:00am..........good luck all!!!....be safe... ( I really don't look like skeletor ,,,ummmm, wellll.......)...thanks all!
  6. Carp fishing in fall can be both challenging and very rewarding. In this weeks new episode of CarpQuest we fish an afternoon session at the fairgrounds and land several great looking common carp. I also discuss the important difference between "Victory Coffee" and "Proactive Victory Coffee". One tastes better than the other, but both will do in a pinch. Hope you enjoy !
  7. Finally got a break in the weather, though the bite is slow.......earlier this week caught a nice 6-14lbr on a nice creek run, then today a couple average catfish, and these two!- A beautiful 5-8 mirror, and this 11-8 common.......slow fighters but nice sunny day!....all on hair rigs-even the creek catch. Lookin forward to FFF, though still trying to pick my venue......
  8. Cold weather baits

Many times this time of year can be a tough time for carp, lots of junk (chod) can blow it making it hard or uncomfortable for carp to feed on bottom so step one is find a location the carp are feeding, scanning the area with binoculars for breaches...also looking at winds and currents to see where leaves and other debris accumulate..these are areas to avoid this time of year..also wafers or pop ups are your friend...other than a single pop up plastic corn on a chod or KD rig...I also like a soft dough on a hair rigged spring...below is one that has worked for me 2 cups of wheaties brand cereal whizzed to a powder in a blender.... 1/3 cup of carnation milk powder...2 table spoons of schnapps....1 pack of strawberry or pineapple jello and the juice of a couple cans of sweet corn mix all your drys in a ziplock bag and shake well then in a separate bowl drain the sweet corn and save the corn for chum in a blender mix the schnapps and corn juice you can add some dry aminos to your dry mix or liquid to your wets mix to a nice dough ..if its too wet add more wheaties powder roll into a big ball and put it on a plate and cover with a bowl and nuke it for 30 sec place in a ziplock with a wet paper towel in the fridge you can roll it in a ball and fish it like a boilee or on a hair rigged spring post up captures and enjoy!
  9. Hey all. I've been fishing for carp up In Mchenry off of Hiawatha trail. I live in Chicago. Now that the weather is getting colder there isn't as many that come through. Was wondering what other spots I could fish that will still produce some good size carp this time of year. Ponds/streams/etc.
  10. Well, it's been a long tough fall, the victory coffee could not keep me from being sick for a month and out of work. Finally back on my feet and found the time to put together a new episode of CarpQuest. So, it's time to break out your java, heat up the water, grab a huge mug, sit back and enjoy our latest episode. In this session I travel up to northern Colorado and fished with two anglers new to carp fishing, Ryan and Bleu. It's one of the things I love about CarpQuest, the opportunity it provides me to meet so many passionate anglers. It was a great day, good conversation, lots of commons in the net and finally a new PB grass carp for me landed. What an amazing session. Both Ryan and Bleu continued with their carp fishing, with Bleu winning the TLO Carp Tournament at the end of this year, and Ryan placing in the previous one. What a great couple of guys, passionate and dedicated to their fishing. Hope you enjoy ! John CarpQuest
  11. With only a few day's to go until Colorado's final carp tournament of the year, at Lake Arbor, 1st Oct it's time to sit back, drink some java and enjoy our latest episode of CarpQuest. A great day's carp fishing on the banks of a favorite venue with friends. Andrew lands a handful on his Nash Sawn Off Scope's, myself and James each land a fish before a strong thunderstorm moved in and we had to depart of the day. Hope you enjoy ! John
  12. Tonights fish

Sometimes, just one nice, hard-fighting carp is all ya need!!........ 12lb 13oz creek fish........water was chocolate and high and I only had an hour or so to fish, and caught this nice channel cat, (note my youthful excitement at catching yet another catfish). Fishing was very, very slow, until this beautiful fish hit- up and down the creek, close to snags, then back, exploded at the net, etc..(now notice my youthful excitement at catching another quality carp!!)..........I've caught over 700 carp in my first year of carpin, and for whatever reason, I'll remember this one!!!
  13. Hello all!!. Weeeelllllll, we had all-time historic flooding in KC so it put the clamp on creek fishing, so I had no choice but to fish flooded ponds and focused on tying more hair-rigs, which I just hadn't refined and been successful on ( I've caught a total of 3, yes 3! carp on hair rigs in the past year and have been very disheartened, but this week has been different!.....One afternoon I caught 6 carp,(ranging from 2-6lbs) this 2lb 15oz goldfish, 2 snapping turtles, and 3 channel catfish, -one half on a hair rig, and the others on the subtle bit technique including 2 doubles! (cat/carp and goldfish/carp)......then, yesterday caught this lone 2lb 13oz carp on a hair, and today, finally, this last pic of a nice carp- 14-1, (with a squared tail) on the hair, plus one catfish and one smaller carp (~2lbs) that I didn't get a picture of........the method was the same- 30g ribbed method feeder packed with a combo of panko, sweetcorn, sweetcorn juice, and strawberry jello, with a very short (3-4") hook link, a piece of fake corn with a piece of sweetcorn and the eye buried in the pack...........worked well and gave me some confidence as I shift to nighttime lake fishing!!.......appreciate the forums and advice -it all helps!!!!
  14. Just in time for the eclipse, before the world's end, it's time to refill your mug, put up your feet, sit back and enjoy our latest episode ! A busy work schedule had too long kept me from the water. Finally we managed to get out and put in a couple of sessions at the Fairgrounds. With the clear skies, burning temperatures, it was always going to be tough fishing. Yet we stuck it out and managed to land a few nice fish. Victory Coffee, tastes as good ever ! Hope you Enjoy ! John
  15. todays fish

Had some time this afternoon to fish with my son, and we caught 2 channel cats, two turtles, and 5 carp, 6-4, 6-14, 7-7, 8-0, 4-6, the latter of which was the chunkiest carp we've ever caught and a great golden color- almost a goldfish!- all fish fought very hard, apparently recuperating from the flooding, these are the most beautiful fish we've caught from any swim!- no specific explanation why.....,the 7lbr had a damaged mouth, and the 8lbr has a paired split barbell, which we find commonly...................
  16. Last nights catches

So....just before the rain ( again!) I fished my new swim- caught 4 channels up to 4lbs, lost a carp in a snag-hook pull, then caught this 12-14, but as I walked to the creek I found one pond had been flooded with carp- dozens at the surface gulping.......near dark I went to the pond and caught another channel immediately, landed this 7-4 and lost TWO more carp to straight hook pulls!.....Hadn't had that many carp in a session get away!!.........I usually change line ties every 3rd fish and hooks when they dull but these seemed ok...............waiting for the rains to stop- no creek fishing for a bit- switching to lakes!........
  17. Unusual double!!

What an unusual evening!!!........I have a creek two minutes by drive, from the house, with one nice pool at a bend in the creek,.......hooked this 5lbr, and had 2 other poles out. To avoid tangling I reel in the other rods, and this time, WHAM, something hit the corn I was reeling in, so I played both fish-landed this long nosed gar first-put it in the sling, then netted the carp!.....I focused on gar a couple years ago using rope lures, and have caught short and long nosed gar which are common here, but its one of my most unusual doubles!- usually a green sunfish hits the other rod(s) I'm reeling.........2 more carp (1-5 and 6-4), a soft-shell turtle and a red eared slider turtle was also caught.........that's why ya love fishing-you just never know!!.....
  18. Another swim

..............well, had another opportunity to explore some swims this afternoon, and before long, albeit a little slow, caught these 4 commons, three channel catfish and one turtle; all in 2 and one half hours of fishing, just before the rains moved in.....seem to be mostly same age-class fish, as they were all very close in size and weight; one fish much longer than the rest though.............always looking!!! o
  19. Went to find some new swims, hoping the historic flooding in KC placed carp in some nearby ponds; some creeks had obviously flooded the ponds but cant find the fish............so, I found a new creek swim and WOW, in just a few hours, I caught 5 carp; 8-11, 11-3, 4-12, 15-11 and a great 17-0!!, some of the prettiest carp I've ever seen-great gold and red color, though none fought as hard as usual-I'm thinking they were fatigued from fighting the flood currents........saw dozens in this swim, which is maybe 100yards long and 20 yards across, but only 6-7 feet deep...........subtle bite technique...........trying to keep the same face.....
  20. Well, it's not been too long, your coffee pot is likely still warm, so sit back, pour yourself a hot mug of java and enjoy our latest episode. With our recent success fishing overnight we returned to Chatfield for another session. Over confident from our previous trip we setup in the rain and wind, anticipating many catches. A few catfish graced the net, including a big fat channel cat. We did land some baby carp and finally a few nice low doubles. Tough night, but still fun. Victory Coffee is not just for carp, any great catch is worthy of a mug! Hope you enjoy ! Tight-Lines, John CarpQuest
  21. todays fish

Tried a local lake very early this morning with no hits, then went to a local creek and was 5 for 5, anywhere from 8-17lbs, the latter of which had a broken hair rig with shrink tubing and 3 pieces of fake corn-my hook was right next to it!!!!.. couldn't tell how long the fish had it; I've never seen other fisherman here at all, so maybe the fish come from upstream, but it's be a ways-no good pools for a mile or so.......Soooo, I gained tackle today instead of losing a rig!!....
  22. Well carp fans, it's been way too long with the mug sat empty. So it's time once again to put on the coffee pot, rinse off the mug and prepare to watch another episode. In this week’s new episode of CarpQuest we fish an overnight session at Chatfield Reservoir. With daytime temps pushing 100F, the bite slow, this could be our best change to get some fish on the mat. Hope you enjoy ! John CarpQuest
  23. Here's some hope for carp!!

Came across this reading my issue of International Angler, published by the IGFA- so there is recognition of the common carp as a sport fish on an International level!!!!.....with conventional tackle!!!!!.....maybe one of us should enter-eh?...................
  24. Back to carpin!!

Here we go!..........90 minutes to fish and caught a nice 8lb 12ozer, then this channel cat that literally leapt 2 feet straight into the air!!!............It is heavier than any individual we caught last week in Minnesota!!!!....
  25. Minnesota fish!!

Hello all!! Well...after an exhausting CAG Big 4 I had to take a break and go fishing, so we went with my two brothers and two of my sons to Minnesota and caught some quality fish!!......in 7 days, we caught 80-90 pike (I was able to catch 42),.. several walleye, a dozen or more largemouth and a large smallmouth, plus two Master Angler Rock bass!..............however, even the largest fish didn't come close to our average carp!!.....back to carpin this week!......
