  1. After another month of computer issues, editing s/w updates, corrupted templates, I was FINALLY able to get another episode edited and released. So, it's time to sit back, grab an extra HUGE mug of java and watch the show. https://youtu.be/nv1CQwVaGnI An overnight session at Chatfield Reservoir resulted in many common and mirror carp for me, including a great mid 20s mirror just after midnight. James caught consistently throughout the night with some good fish banked. Hope you Enjoy! John CarpQuest
  2. Started chumming a new swim a couple hours before midnight, then fished a little and caught two small commons.......hmmmm... not good. But, at the rate of 2 fish per hour, fishing gradually picked up in terms of size!........what started as 4-8 lbrs quickly rose to my personal best, next to last, linear mirror carp!, and a 20-1, 33" at that!....This carps ventral aspect was white!- I thought it was some aberrant catfish at first as it didn't fight like a carp and SOOOOOOOO Excited when I landed it!!............so tired, but it invigorating catch!!!!!..........waitin to be approved to log the fish on the CAG Big Four.......went back to my original pack bait, as my newer lime or lemon based hadn't been working as well, but the lemon came through (the 13-5 fell to that).......WOW what a start!!!......... 4-5, 12-3, 7-0, 13-0, 14-2, 13-5, 5-0, -8, 13-2, 6-2, 20-1, and 14-2!!!!............
  3. In this week’s new special episode of CarpQuest we travel 5000 miles back to the UK for a summer vacation. I took with me all the tackle I could pack so I could take my niece out fishing whilst there. The Quest, to help Stephanie catch her first ever fish, a carp. Could we get it done? Hope you enjoy ! Tight-Lines, John

    Creek carpin

Back to the creeks-lakes are just too warm (82-85F!) and not catching any. But, creeks seem to be reliable. This week I caught two carp (6lb and 4lb) and one very nice (my biggest creek grass carp at 20lbs; compared to my lake largest 46lbs), then this evening, had a nice two hour session, catching a 10-4, then a near black 11-3 and 7 minutes later a 9-7, then nice 12-4, and ended with this pretty 6-7......one week total of 79lb 9oz!!!......my faith is restored after driving 2 hours Friday night to what I thought would be a hidden gem, but talked to a guy going bowhunting.....the shores were littered with longnose gar, asian carp but no commons...he stated there are some small ones, but i didn't have 1 hit in 8 hours!!!......such an interesting season!........fair thee well fellow carpers!!....
  5. Crazy hot weather and carp fishing action on Memorial Day weekend. I pushed the scales close to 30 lb's a couple of times with some mighty Chatfield Reservoir common carp. Scopex Squid doing the job paired with Trokar Magnum curved shank hooks. An insane session with over twenty carp landed. A new PB mirror was landed for Bob Crook and an almost twenty pound common for James. Hope you enjoy our latest episode! Tight-Lines, John CarpQuest

    Using New Pack Bait

Had a nice day fishing at a new spot with a new bread crumb, sweet corn and jello pack bait. Caught nice 10 pound mirror and a small bullhead. The middle of the day on really hot days seems to be producing the most bites and hookups. Video soon to come

    And the carpin continues!

Hey all!!! Well after zeroing out at multiple local lakes, I got my groove back in the creeks!!!. In just about 5 hours, I caught 7 carp...more like what I'm used to!!......subtle bite worked wonders on straight sweet corn for four fish and 10g method lead with panko and hair rig for the others, but also hooked on subtle bite for 2/3 of them-one did actually run!!...It had rained this morning, not flooding the creeks, but making the creek murky and likely the carp were less shy......the 10lbr ran up and down the creek for 10 minutes before being able to land him! After a disappointing weekend, in which I caught NO CARP, I needed my fix and it helped lift my spirits and confirm my corn, pack bait and technique still works!!....to heck with lakes, eh?.......so 5-10, 2-10, 6-10, 8-8, 9-0, 2-8, and 10lbr!....the 9lbr appeared to be a pre spawn female, and is the darkest carp I ever caught!. I had seen her against the opposite bank with her back out of the water-I'm assuming she did this routinely and simply got her tan on for spring break!!........good luck all!!
  8. Multiple mugs of coffee cannot prepare you for this insane session from a few weeks ago. With my usual spots taken I setup on the east shore of the main reservoir facing out into the wide open water. What a crazy session followed, with four carp in the 20's landed, a handful of fish in the mid teens and finally a new PB mirror. What a great afternoon's carp fishing! Hope you enjoy. <teaser: the new PB mirror carp only lasted a week, landed an even bigger one the next session!> Hope you Enjoy ! John CarpQuest
  9. (MO) MOCarper

    carpin continues!

Well, CAG Big four is over, but carpin isn't!.......my son and I went again last night and we each caught a 20lber!, plus this 5lbr!.....the spawn is over here and hoping the carp turn on feeding as its been tough.........
  10. Welllllllll, that didn't last long!...Just caught my new PB grass carp!- 46lb 13oz and 48" long!!!!.....Not what I was fishing for, and a very rough day-lost my first carp to a snag, as well as the hair rig, lost an entire rig to another snag, then caught 4 straight channel cats, then a little, pretty, 5-5....switched locations and caught a 12-7, then this massive beast!!!!.....Kinda makes up for the day!..
  11. (MO) MOCarper

    PB Grasser!

Hi all! Plugging along catchin, though no hot action yet (6 carp in 2 hours), including this personal best 33lb 6 oz runner!!! ....beat my previous of 25lbs!...Nice, but wantin a common that big!!!!...good luck all!!!

    CAG Big Four Day 1

Day 1- SOOOOOOO excited!- I got my three pack baits ready, rods, etc etc last night, then went to a relatively new ( for me) venue early evening.....winds were wicked at 30 mph, but blowing in.......then I DOUBLED on First day of CAG big four!!!... WOW, on my way with this 25-2, and 17-13!!!.....then a nice 14-7!!!......wow!!!, what a great start!.....and then....uhhhh, I DIDN'T HAVE THE SCALE IN THE PICTURES!!!! AGHHHHHHHHHH.....they don't count!!!!!!!!!!!!....OH WELL -they were long gone, but, it was fishing, so I stays til I caught this 20lbr and an 18-2, then a bullhead and channel cat as it got dark.........so, at least I started!.......tomorrow and thursday is rain, so may not go...............

    April carpin

Hi all!.... Rocky winter-too prolonged, but managed to catch fish every month so far!....Had 90 minutes to fish this evening, just before dark at the local creek.......just came up with a new pack bait, and low and behold, caught two on a strawberry, panko, sweet corn, bird seed combo on a fake corn hair rig, but one on the new combo- sweet pea panko and bird seed!........the first strawberry was 4-15, then the sweet pea 6-5 and finally topped it off with a very nice 10-10!........stuffs warmin up!!!.........good luck all!......

    winter carp fishing

Hey all!! The weather finally warmed in KC so I took the opportunity to take a stab at one of the very few open water access, which is a reliable, though smaller-fish venue. Set one corn-rig, and two hair rigs, and viola!- this beautiful 4-13 golden carp- it fought like a summer fish and just before netting I thought I had a mirror, but alas, not to be......still, nice to get out -only a couple months til ATC!!!!......hope everyone had a great holiday season!!.......
  16. Colorado 2017 - Master Angler Awards and year end report. The "Highs" 2017 was a challenging year for carp fishing here in Colorado. Old venues that produced consistently were tough challenges for the majority of anglers. It was a wet and cooler year, windy, though we did not experience the crazy flooding we saw back in 2016. Late spring and summer produced the best catch rates and larger fish on average. MA stats dwindled somewhat, with 21 commons being reported (compared to 41 in 2015). However there was an uptick in grass carp catches and reports, 20 fish logged, albeit two anglers caught nearly all of them from the same private water (compared to 5 in 2015). The increase in grass carp catches could be a result of stocking programs for pond cleanup and weed/algae removal. I usually only submit a couple of fish per year to this program (common and grass carp), else the stats/page would be a wee bit skewed. I did manage to equal the best common of the year and topped the grass carp list; though my fish was not officially submitted within the time limits; out of respect for the angler whom invited me to fish that lake. Fly carping remains the showcase for carp in our state. A strong contingent of fly anglers target these fish year long and the "Trout Unlimited" Carp Slam event on the South Platte river for charity remains popular (albeit very expensive entrance fees and requirements). The gold medal consistent water for carp in Colorado remains "Chatfield Reservoir". This venue holds carp in excess of 30 lb's, both mirrors and commons. It faces substantial angling pressure and recreational activity. CPW patrol on a regular basis and are very "watchful" of all behaviors of carp anglers, especially from afar with their binoculars! Tightline Outdoors, a local outfitter, hosted 2 Catch & Release Carp Tournaments during 2017. Attendance peaked at just over 30 anglers. For Team CarpQuest I managed to WIN the day/night event at Chatfield Reservoir with my partner James. For me, it was a huge highlight, my 6th tournament entered and 1st individual win. Team CarpQuest also won the 2016 day/night tournament, this time James taking 1st with me as his partner. It would appear Team CarpQuest fishes well in the blackness of night. The tournament at Lake Arbor was won by a new angler to carp fishing, Bleu Patino and his partner Ryan Quist; I had previously met Ryan and Bleu a month before to provide some encouragement and advice on carp fishing tackle & tactics. They certainly learned fast! CAG membership wise, we remain steady at "2" We lost a member in 2017 and gained a new one. The challenges we face with regards to CPWs view of the sport, the tactics and the species as a whole, present a serious uphill climb here in Colorado. Next to Utah, Colorado is arguably 2nd on the list of carp hating states. Oh well ! The "Low's" Whilst 2017 saw an increase in the local anglers targeting carp, this also brought increased attention from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Many angers were being "enthusiastic" about their use of packbaits, especially with regards to Colorado laws requiring the bait be attached and with packbaits, inside of the pack. This resulted in numerous tickets being issued to anglers. Though CPW realizes carp angling is becoming popular here; they are still no fans of the species. Individual wildlife officers can be openly negative. Bow Fishing for carp continues at all venues where shooting is legal; however their endeavors are rarely posted in a social media context; all but driven underground here locally. Catch & Release has become the new "trendy" behavior for Trophy fish of all species. On a personal note, my own carp fishing adventures during 2017 were seriously curtailed (my trips out were reduced by 75%); mainly due to personal health and family reasons. I am hopeful 2018 will be a great new year with some excellent carp fishing during the season. Closing 2018 is set to be another great year here for carp fishing in Colorado. With the mild winter there should be an early ice-off and a great season ahead. Colorado has stunning wild carp, both commons and mirrors, with many venues holding 20s and some with a very rare 30s. Our fish are typically slender and powerful fighters. If you are looking for an opportunity to wet your line and hold a stunning wild mile-high carp in your hands, then Colorado should be on your list of places to visit. By all means drop me a PM, or message if you are looking to come to Colorado to fish for carp, I can certainly provide assistance, local information and advice, especially with regards to our draconian regulations with regards to bait use.

    Sharp hooks??

How important is it to sharpening your hooks when fishing for one bite a day or up to 3 bites on a outstanding day?

    Contact with a FFing carper

I just made contact with a fellow who fly fishes for carp here in Tennessee. We are planning on getting together this year to put some gold in the net by using the skinny stick. Stand by for photos and all the details!

    Simple anti-tangle technique

Prepping for the FFF, and carpin in general, I was continually frustrated driving to a swim, going through the woods, etc. and getting my rods tangled; whether in the car or walking to the swim...........I don't like putting my hooks off my method feeders to the hook holders, or line guides on the rods-it damages the hook point, bends the shrink tubing and puts pressure on the line at the rod tip-sooooooooo, I tried a simple, simple thought-I looked for little nylon bags to cover the hooks, but after not finding any, I used zip-lock sandwich bags-simply placed my method feeder/hair rig in the bag and zip-lock....no tangles, no hooked on brush, etc.!!!......worked well hauling gear for the FFF!!

    Carp Fishing Korea and others

I recalled a video about carp fishing with the fly rod in Korea. I did a search and came up with a number of links. This one is my favorite. The background music is worth the whole eight minute video. Note the reels in the water to cool the drag- shows how a carp can run! Also, there is a fellow fishing from the bank in the background of a couple of scenes. Enjoy as I always like the action and the music. Note the crowded highway along the river. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=carp+fishing+Korea&view=detail&mid=71EE3FEDA506CD167EF771EE3FEDA506CD167EF7&FORM=VIRE
  21. Finally got a break in the weather, though the bite is slow.......earlier this week caught a nice 6-14lbr on a nice creek run, then today a couple average catfish, and these two!- A beautiful 5-8 mirror, and this 11-8 common.......slow fighters but nice sunny day!....all on hair rigs-even the creek catch. Lookin forward to FFF, though still trying to pick my venue......

    FFF Primer

Hi all!!! To echo Frank's call to participate in the 2018 FFF, I took the liberty to perform a pre- FFF primer, last night to show how easy it is!..........so........here's a simple step-by step process; 1. Wake/Stay up 2. Check the local time (starts at midnight!) 3. Drink (insert here- victory coffee, tea, juice, water, etc, but don't drink and drive) 4. Dress appropriately 5. Proceed to the local carp venue which contains un-frozen (non-frozen for the North zone anglers ) with appropriate carp fishing gear- pole, reel, line, hook, bait 6. Proceed to insert line/bait into carp venue 7. Reel in carp 8. Obtain photo of you and carp, preferably a time stamp on your picture 9. Release carp 10. Rebait and fish; repeat steps 6-9 over and over until 11:59pm January 2nd 11. Record and send in your photos on the thread Frank has set up ( thanks Frank and CAG for having this!!) 12. Follow these modified steps 1. Thank your uber drivers 2. Dress appropriately for a good nights sleep 3. Drink (see above) 4. Check the local time 5. Fall asleep By following this simple 17 steps on January 1st 2018, you too will enjoy the comaraderie of fellow CAG members as we start off what will be the best carpin year of all!! I followed these steps exactly, and low and behold.......... I was already awake. The local time was 11:40pm December 2, 2017. I drank one swig of tea. I dressed appropriately. (these I found were all easy steps) I proceeded (with the assistance of fellow CAG member and wife) to be dropped off at my venue....(it isn't safe to leave the car there). The water was un-frozen. I proceeded to place my terminal tackle into the water. I caught carp at 11:50pm 4-4lbr; 12:10am 3-0lbr; 12:21am 3lb 4oz, and this 4lb 8oz at 1:00am-thats my BIG FOUR FFF fish. Then I enlisted the local uber driver (my son and fellow CAG member) to retrieve me from the venue. I followed the modified steps and was asleep by 2:00am and now back to work at 6:00am..........good luck all!!!....be safe... ( I really don't look like skeletor ,,,ummmm, wellll.......)...thanks all!
  23. Carp fishing in fall can be both challenging and very rewarding. In this weeks new episode of CarpQuest we fish an afternoon session at the fairgrounds and land several great looking common carp. I also discuss the important difference between "Victory Coffee" and "Proactive Victory Coffee". One tastes better than the other, but both will do in a pinch. Hope you enjoy !
  24. MoCarp

    Cold weather baits

Many times this time of year can be a tough time for carp, lots of junk (chod) can blow it making it hard or uncomfortable for carp to feed on bottom so step one is find a location the carp are feeding, scanning the area with binoculars for breaches...also looking at winds and currents to see where leaves and other debris accumulate..these are areas to avoid this time of year..also wafers or pop ups are your friend...other than a single pop up plastic corn on a chod or KD rig...I also like a soft dough on a hair rigged spring...below is one that has worked for me 2 cups of wheaties brand cereal whizzed to a powder in a blender.... 1/3 cup of carnation milk powder...2 table spoons of schnapps....1 pack of strawberry or pineapple jello and the juice of a couple cans of sweet corn mix all your drys in a ziplock bag and shake well then in a separate bowl drain the sweet corn and save the corn for chum in a blender mix the schnapps and corn juice you can add some dry aminos to your dry mix or liquid to your wets mix to a nice dough ..if its too wet add more wheaties powder roll into a big ball and put it on a plate and cover with a bowl and nuke it for 30 sec place in a ziplock with a wet paper towel in the fridge you can roll it in a ball and fish it like a boilee or on a hair rigged spring post up captures and enjoy!
