Looks almost prehistoric to me

Armored catfish. I used to keep a couple similar to that one. They are common aquarium fish.

Mickey is correct. It is also called a brown hoplo. The fish was caught in Jamaica bay in Queens New York

Yea, definitely a Callichthyid. Very cool that it was caught locally! It probably wouldn't have survived the winter because they are native to South America (most species anyway). It was someone's former pet fish, I'm sure.

NY waters are surprising. I once saw a Pacu and an Asian crayfish in Oakland Lake. Never know...

lots of people buy fish and when bored they release them into our lakes ,,, blah .... one of reasons piranhas are illegal in NY ..
