I started using boilies and hair rigs in the middle of last year. I have caught over fifty carp since then but im missin one thing. I thought carp were supposed to hook themselves and make screaming runs. I have only had this experiance a few times though. Its ususally tap tap pick up the rod and stick em. im catching plenty of fish but i want my alarms to scream. if anybody has an tips on rigging etc. please help me out.

Are you using a fixed our semi fixed lead? if I use a running rig I normaly have the same the problem as you. Its a simple fix by pegging the lead.

I usually use 2.5-3oz. lead at least, it helps in the hooking process. I too am a newbie with the hairrig used about year and a half, I can honestly say the majority of my runs are screemers! I think the carp feels the heavyness of the weight and spooks, causing the screemin runs, and usually a good hookset aswell.

Yup bigger lead = usually a Better bolt effect, sometimes it's just the fish though if they are lethargic like in early spring late fall, I find the real heavies around where i live don't bolt off that fast period, they just take the line out slow, while the smaller fish scream away. But I get my fair share of twitch bites aswell, aslong as your hooking up I wouldn't worry about it mate, could be out of your control :D

If you want screaming runs I suggest you watch Jerome Moisands youtube videos. Other than that, I would recommend using at least a 3 oz. fixed lead with a short leader and smaller bait. The videos will really open your eyes to what's going on under water. Good Luck!

I noticed your avatar is you with a buffalo. I don't mean anything by it but are you getting the two mixed up. Please don't get angry at me for the question.

That sounds like more of a Buff bite your describing. Look up blow back rigs and go to size 6-8 carp hooks and try various types like curve, long and wide gap. I have blow back rigs tied up from size 4-8 and had a 99% hook up ratio over the weekend. Another good tip 3-4 in hook lenghts only.

Could be more buffalo like big fish said. I missed 3 good runs then switched to a blowback with the same bait and got a 47lb buffalo on the next run. with those results I feel.the blowback can be extremely effective when normal hair rig isnt working
