This may sound like a dumb question but I am wondering if there are any reason why I could not use Diawa's Spod reel for actual fishing? Is there anything in the specs or design that would stop one from using it for throwing rigs when not spodding out bait?

The reason I ask is because there are a few swims I frequent that are a far hike and I like to travel light, so if I could reduce the number of rods it would be to my advantage.

yes you can fish with it, I'd just be wary of hook pulls near the bank due to its stiffness.

Why not bring a 3.5lb tc rod and just fish/spod with that? I've never owned and spodded with an actual spod rod, and I have no problem hitting 100+ yds with the spod

Are you talking spod REEL or spod ROD..as the title of your thread says spod rod, but you say spod reel in your post.

The Daiwa spod rods are not that heavy, maybe 4-4.5TC so it would work , just stiffer than your normal carp rod. If its the spod reel, yes you can but it has a much faster retrieve than a normal carp reel.

Alex I messed that one up it should have read Spod REEL. If anyone else reads this please comment on the reels as opposed to the rods. Thank you.

Thats the last time I post just before falling asleep!!

No man. Go for it. Typically, the spod reel should be slightly better than your fishing reels for 2 reasons.
Size - a full spod is heavy. So a bigger reel with properly wound line will enable the cast to hit and exceed your fishing reels distance.
Engineering - spod rod and reel take a beating from all the use.

The spots I am fishing lately happen to be short to mid distances so I can easily reach the distance with my reg fishing outfit. So, like you, carrying gear in is my issue. Ive been using an outfit to spod, then I switch it over to a rig.

There are no rules or "thou shalts" in fishing. Think outside the box and enjoy yourself. :P

A reel is a reel in my books........I would definately ensure the drag is set loose though

as for Santoshs comment, I agree totally with not using spod rods, and even spod reels...... The rods I use to fish, I use for spodding,

put a marker out with one, then attach a spod to the other with a quick clip, finish spodding and bring it in.............then take the spod off to put the rig out to the marker.......mark the line and then bring the marker float back. I think both spod rods, spod reels and marker rods are a bit of a gimic to get you to buy more stuff!

Good luck and happy hiking!

I used to have one and I would go as far to say - no, don't use it for your usual fishing - use your normal reel for spodding.

They are very heavy and I feel pretty clunky and the drag on them is piss poor.

They are pretty good for spodding though - very very high retrieve ratio and a couple of line clips meaning you can fish a couple of spots with them which is really handy.

if you decide to use the spod reel for fishing I do not beleive it will have a baitrunner so just do what we did surf fishing run the drag lose and after you get a run you palm the spool to set the hook and slow the run down then readjust drag.

To all that gave a thumbs up , wouldn't a spod reel have a less smooth drag as oppose to a reel engineered for playing fish ???? I dunno really that's why I made the statement in the form of a question .I jus retired a bigpit to a spod reel cause the drag was shot (it dont matter as a spod reel as I lock up my drag anyway for spoding ).
P.B. getting there

Ken,its actually an extremely smooth reel. The reason I bought mine was the retrieve is huge. One turn is like 4 feet so if you spod a ton this saves some time and effort.
