There is just a little over a week remaining until the July 28 3-in-1 tournaments at Ottawa. One pole, three tournaments, up to 17 participants.

There will be a 100% payout of the entry fees ($30 entry) in a payout structure as follows: $90 - 1st, $50 - 2nd, and $30 - 3rd for each of the three tournaments (based on 17 anglers). If there are fewer than 17 entrants, payout will be prorated on a percentage basis consistent with the original structure. There will be an optional $10 side pot for biggest common or mirror carp with a 60% -1st and 40%-2nd payout. Others may wish to conduct other pots.

In addition, the angler closest to a fish (any species) weighing 6-1 (in honor of 61 years in business at Indiana's Westside Bait and Tackle) wins this Chub baitbucket, courtesy of Mr. Jim Donlan.

Revised "rules" based on the opportunity to "purchase" two pegs for this event:

There is a $30.00 entry fee and an optional $10.00 pot for the big common/mirror carp. (Others may opt to conduct other species big fish pots.)

Anglers are limited to one pole, one line, and a single, non-treble hook on the line. However, artificial baits with treble hooks are allowed for those targeting bass, but any snagged fish will be disallowed.

This will be a pegged event with a random drawing for fishing positions.

Due to the strong possibility that there will be fewer than 17 participants, you can fish 2 pegs (for $60). Those who pay for 2 pegs will draw first and get the peg they draw plus the one to the immediate right of that peg. The organizer will "purchase" two pegs, but he will draw last from among those who purchase two. If more commit to participating in the event before the July 27 deadline, those who committed to two pegs will be reduced to one in reverse order of their commitment to two (organizer will be dropped to one peg first).

The peg draw format will have the first angler to commit to this tournament drawing first (AFTER THOSE WHO OPT FOR TWO PEGS) and so on. For the second and third rounds, peg draw will be based on peg positions of the previous round (ie., peg 1 draws first after those who have two pegs). You will be allowed to fish the same peg during consecutive sessions if you draw the same peg again.

Anglers are to keep rigs/pods/pole within five feet of their peg flag. The fishing area for each peg is the peg flag to halfway to the next peg flag (left and right). If you have an end peg (peg 17 (or last peg on right side of venue) or peg 1), you may fish 10 yards to the right of peg 17 (or right end peg) or 10 yards to the left of peg 1.

Chumming/groundbaiting is not allowed until 7:00 a.m. Be careful how much you chum. You are baiting for whomever has your peg in rounds 2 and 3.

Anglers are asked to bring a scale and tripod so fish may be weighed at the location of capture. A witness is required to sign-off on the time weighed and weight of each fish. Because this event has some match-fishing components and because it is an all specieis event, anglers may either sack fish until the end of each session or weigh them upon capture. Your call. All fish must be released in good shape (able to swim strongly away) or they will not count.

Anglers must handle all fish, no matter what species, with proper care. Bring unhooking mats and weigh-slings.

Anglers must play their own fish, but they may have assistance in netting it.

Fish must be hooked by the end of each round (10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m.). An angler will haveten minutes. to land the fish (must be in the net).

Make sure you have a valid Illinois Fishing License.

Pre-tournament venue report - Illinois River at Ottawa, IL

The July 28th three-in-one all species tournament could be a challenge for participants if my July 24th session at the venue is any indication.

I fished to the west of the pre-determined pegged area from 5:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and caught five fish: three commons and two grassies. Lots of fish were surfacing at the beginning of the day, including some Asian carp.

The weather was warm as I arrived at Ottawa (85 degrees), but the venue looked promising as the sun rose on the Illinois.
Posted Image

I quickly caught two fish before 6:30 a.m. including the six pound common pictured below.
Posted Image

However, an approaching shelf cloud between 6:30 and 7:00 did not bode well for future catches.
Posted Image

Although Ottawa did not get the deluge and the accompanying winds that those nearer to Chicago were subjected to, it did get windy with whitecaps on the river and churned up water.

The front that passed through turned the fish off, and I just caught three more in the ensuing four hours.

Hopefully, conditions will be more stable on July 28.

River levels are a little low, but depths are still very good ten feet off the bank and beyond.

I threw a thermometer into the river, and it registered 82 degrees (get the rice and millet pack ready, boys!)

Good luck to all.--Frank

Cory--Peg draw for two pegs was explained in a post in the "Friends of CAG" section. Those opting for 2 pegs will draw first. Pegs assigned will be the number drawn and the peg to its immediate right. If an angler draws 17 or one that does not allow an adjoining peg to the right (i.e., somebody already has that peg), he will draw again. Fish may not be combined from 2 pegs for the top 3 places (separate scorecards for each peg). An angler with two pegs must designate which peg counts for the big common/mirror pot if he enters for $10. He can use both pegs if he enters big common/mirror pot for $20. Hope this answers your questions.--Frank
