This is a recent letter I sent the MNR regarding the use of 2 rods. Here's their reply:

Hello Arvand,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Any change to allow the use of 2 lines for carp fishing would require revisions to the Ontario Fishery Regulations. A number of factors would have to be taken into consideration, including the enforceability of any new regulations, whether to designate certain areas to use two lines, the ability to distinguish carp anglers from anglers fishing for other species, etc.

We are currently evaluating various options to determine if a regulation amendment is required and, if so, what the most appropriate management option would be.

Thank you for your interest in Ontario's recreational fisheries.

Regards,

Subject: Carp Fishing

Hi

Just wanted to know if there has been any development in using two rods fishing for carp in Ontario.  Please let me know if there is any change in the rule.

Cheers
Arvand P.

I urge all to keep sending the MNR e mails requesting them to change the rules for carp anglers and the use of two rods to be legal.

here is my recent email

Hello and good day

My name is Shawn Lewis and I am an avid carp angler in Burlington Ontario.

As you may be aware there are many anglers that are pushing for the approval of 2 rods being used when targeting common carps. It is in my opinion that tourism and spending should be taken into consideration as more and more people are traveling from abroad in search of the common carp based on its size and power as a great catch and release species. Further to this the sport is growing exponentially within Ontario as more and more people including fishing show hosts are searching for these fish.

Is there any movement in discussions about this topic?

Additionally, something to consider is that almost ALL carp anglers practice catch and release and target common carps using methods that prevent the hookups both legit and foul of game fish. The sportsmen like attitude paired with the advanced techniques used contribute to a REDUCTION of risk put upon our pressured game fish.

Please advise at your earliest convenience regarding the movement of this discussion.

Best regards,

Concerned angler

Shawn Lewis

Good on you Shawn, this is the way forward. We need to keep pestering them, maybe one day they will wake up and realize the financial potential revolving around the sport!

Have you signed the sticky 2 rod petition in the other section?

Contact a few businesses and ask them to write a letter showing there support for this, It will go a long way if you can get some businesses to say there profits will increase from this. We did this in PA when trying to get 3 rods and it had a very good impact on the overall reason of getting 3 rods instead of 2.

I wrote to them from the UK and got this from Bob Bergmann in 2009

Thank you for you recent inquiry regarding fishing carp with 2 lines in certain parts of Ontario. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has received several similar requests from anglers and tourist businesses promoting the fishing of carp using 2 lines. Generally, the concern expressed is that Ontario is missing out on potential revenue since tourists fishing for carp head to the US side of the St. Lawrence River where fishing for 2 lines is permitted. MNR is responding to this issue by looking into practical ways that we could accommodate using 2 lines while fishing for carp that is simple to enforce and not abused by anglers fishing for other species. We do not want carp angling with 2 lines to increase fishing pressure on non-target species such as muskie, walleye, bass and pike. I hope that we can find a suitable management solution to this issue. If a decision is made to allow 2 lines when fishing carp, the process to make the necessary regulation changes to the Ontario Fishery Regulations will take approximate 2 years to complete.

So they were looking in to it 3 years ago, and they are looking in to it now......(British Sarcasm)

Sorry to say they always have a constipated answer like the ones they have sent us all! Its ok for big business to pollute our waters and kill off a whole ecosystem, but a carp angler using 2 rods will put pressure on not targeted species!! I think these guys work next door to the folks at the weather channel!!!!

I have replied to an earlier mail from them stating that I noticed I had got a standardised answer that looks like it has been sent out for years so have asked for an update. i have also suggested that if they haven't come up with any idea's about how to distinguish between carp anglers then they should maybe contact the Canadian CAG chairs of the Angling Trust in the UK.

I await their reply with baited breath... :)

I like the challenge of using 1 rod, I wouldn't mind being able to double up my chances and double my catches with another rod though!
