FFF 2016 - Memories

Recommended Posts

This post is the same as that which announced FFF 2016 winners, awards, and prizes, but I wanted to include it in the FFF Memories archives section along with the other 11 years of FFF Memories posts.

(Willem, if you come across this, please pin it (along with FFF 2015 - Memories) in the Memories section). Thanks. --Frank Rink, FFF 2016 Coordinator

Anglers win battle with the elements (and carp) at CAG’s 2016 First Fishing Folly

The North American continent was inundated with tornadoes, floods, and frigid weather (even in the south) during the few days preceding January 1st’s FFF 2016. I was counting on an event resulting in the occasional small fish by a small handful of participants. Boy, was I wrong and gladly so!

So many great fish, so many great photographs, so many great stories, so many great anglers!

Not only were carp caught throughout the entire 24 hour FFF 2016 time-frame with the first at 12:10 a.m. (Shawn Rafter) and the last at 11:58 p.m. (Joe Davino), but the crafty “queens of the rivers” were also captured in quantity and quality.

No fewer than seven anglers were named to the FFF 2016 Hall of Fame for catching a carp between midnight and 6:00 a.m. on January 1, 2016!

Shawn Rafter netted a record carp (35-10) to better his 34+ of ten FFF's ago! In addition to Shawn's 35-10, his FFF 2016 partner Mike Keegan landed a 30-0!

One hundred five (105) carp were landed, pictured, and recorded for FFF 2016 totaling 1,088 pounds, 15 ounces! That triples FFF 2015 results!

The 105 carp entries averaged 10 pounds, 6 ounces.

Huge thanks to the 60 anglers who entered FFF 2016. Personal circumstances, weather, and unforeseen obstacles did not allow all of you to get on the bank on January 1, but your intentions are and were appreciated!

I was sorry to see that no junior anglers recorded any fish. Maybe next year. In addition, no one submitted a carp sculpture and no mirrors were caught during FFF 2016 in the South Zone.

The lady carpers fared very well as Kim Guirl placed 1, 2, or 3 in three separate South Zone Divisions and Keri Doire landed a double digit mirror to place in the Scubadoc-North Division.

Thanks and congrats to all who were able to actually wet a line on 1/1/16. Some of us didn’t catch fish, but your efforts are commendable. Hope you had fun!

Big congrats to the 21 anglers who submitted some kind of entry for FFF 2016! Of that number, 16 anglers were from the North Zone and five were from the South Zone.

Awards, especially for this event, can be mostly a function of location, but kudos, still, to those who had knowledge of and access to those locations and who made those locations “work.”

I will be PMing winners with requests for information about how to get your prizes to you, or I will send you codes of the bait/tackle gift certificates you have won. (Thanks, again, to CAG, Matt Latzo, and Frank Rink for donating prizes and to the CAG Bait and Tackle members who were willing to sell us gift certificates for prizes.)

Thanks to the Board of Directors for CAG’s sponsorship of FFF 2016 and for allowing me to conduct another First Fishing Folly. With then-president Andy Sprinkle’s approval of my proposal, I started coordinating FFF in 2014 when it was on the verge of being discontinued. I sincerely hope the number of entered anglers and overall FFF outcomes (both empirical and qualitative) warrant its continuation. --Dr. Frank Rink

Here’s a quick rundown of those who submitted FFF 2016 entries (In alphabetical order):

(Jacob Ayotte, RI, North) The dynamic duo of Jacob Ayotte and Keri Doire submitted a wonderful group of attractive carp. Jacob was also part of a group of motivated Rhode Island participants (I believe there were 5 in the group) who fished in close proximity to one another. Jacob took second in the Scubadoc-North Division with a 10-7 mirror and 2nd in the Baby-North Division with a 5-3. Congrats, Jacob! FFF 2016 data for Jacob Ayotte: Big Carp-10-7, Total Weight-36-13, Total Number of Carp-5, Small Carp-5-3, Big Mirror-10-7, Overall Average-7-6.

(Danny Burke, IN, North) Danny submitted a wonderful FFF 2016 Sunrise photo entry from Fowler Park in Terre Haute, Indiana! His entry took 2nd place in the Sunrise photo competition for FFF 2016. Congrats, Danny!
post-8343-0-08175200-1451699219_thumb.jp

(Darren Calver, IL, North) Darren followed up nicely on his FFF 2014 23-8 with an outstanding 21-8 in FFF 2016 from the Chicago River. The 21-8 had Darren taking third place in the Monster-North Division. Darren also took 10th in the Lucky 13 Awards with an 8:51 a.m. capture. Darren's FFF 2016 Sunrise photo also achieved a third place award. Congrats, Darren! FFF 2016 data for Darren Calver: Big Carp-21-8, Total Weight-47-13, Total Number of Carp-3, Small Carp-10-2, Overall Average-15-15. Darren partnered with Met Lika for this FFF 2016.

(Evan Cartabiano, NC or SC, South) Evan has become a consistent winner at CAG’s First Fishing Folly. This year was no exception. He took 1st in the Monster-South Division (23-7) and 3rd in the Emperor-South Division (60-10). Evan also was 13th in the Lucky 13 First Carp of the Year contest (10:20 capture). Evan's fine writing also took a 2nd in the Jerome Adventure Tale competition. Congrats, Evan! FFF 2016 data for Evan Cartabiano: Big Carp-23-7, Total Weight-60-10, Total Number of Carp-3, Small Carp-18-6, Overall Average-20-3.

gallery_8362_220_431220.jpg

(Joe Davino, NJ, North) Joe should win an award for persistence with a 19+ caught at 11:58 p.m. in the waning seconds of FFF 2016. Congrats, Joe! FFF 2016 data for Joe Davino: Big Carp-19-4, Total Weight-19-4, Total Number of Carp-1, Small Carp-19-4, Overall Average-19-4.

(Brandon Dee, RI, North) Brandon Dee was a mirror machine, submitting 11 mirrors, including a winning 16-6 in the Scubadoc-North Division. Brandon also took first place (3-10) in the Baby-North race and 3rd in the Emperor-North Division (115-4). He also won a Lucky 13 award for 9th carp of 2016. Congrats, Brandon! FFF 2016 data for Brandon Dee: Big Carp-16-6, Total Weight-115-4, Total Number of Carp-12, Small Carp-3-10, Big Mirror-16-6, Overall Average-9-10.

(Keri Doire, RI, North) Keri Doire graciously joined CAG recently to participate in FFF 2016, but the CAG newcomer is no rookie to carp fishing. Keri took 3rd in the Scubadoc-North Division with a solid double digit mirror. The dynamic duo of Keri and Jacob Ayotte not only submitted a wonderful group of Rhode Island carp, but, I think you would agree, they would also be in the running for most photogenic fishing partners. Congrats, Keri! FFF 2016 data for Keri Doire: Big Carp-10-2, Total Weight-18-8, Total Number of Carp-2, Small Carp-8-8, Big Mirror-10-2, Overall Average-9-4.

(Bob Elias, PA, North) FFF is more about the journey than it is about final results. Thanks to Bob Elias for venturing out on 1/1/16. Bob’s capture didn’t qualify for awards due to photo criteria, but it’s a great fish, nonetheless. Congrats, Bob!
post-409-0-44719200-1451686528_thumb.jpg

(Kim Guirl, TN, South) Talk about the ladies showing the guys how it’s done! Kim Guirl visited her brother Rob Schoborg in Tennessee over the Christmas break and took FFF 2016 by storm! Kim was first in the Baby-South Division (2-3), second in the Emperor-South Division (94-4), and third in the Monster-South Division (13-3). In addition, Kim is an FFF 2016 Hall of Famer, having captured a carp at 1:12 a.m. (4th fish of the year). Now that’s hauling! Congrats, Kim! FFF 2016 data for Kim Guirl: Big Carp-13-3, Total Weight-94-4, Total Number of Carp-17, Small Carp-2-3, Overall Average-5-9.

(Mike Keegan, NY, North) Mike Keegan and his FFF 2016 partner Shawn Rafter pretty well swept all the big fish prizes for the North Zone event, and also had fish on the mat early and often! Mike captured the second carp of 2016 (12:20 a.m. - Hall of Fame). He also caught one of those oh-so-rare FFF thirties with the big carp weighing in at 30 pounds even for 2nd place in the Monster-North Division. Mike’s 146-8 also placed 2nd in the Emperor-North Division! His average for six carp was a whopping 24-7! Congrats, Mike! FFF 2016 data for Mike Keegan: Big Carp-30-0, Total Weight-146-8, Total Number of Carp-6, Small Carp-19-10, Overall Average-24-7.
post-9176-0-23392900-1451861352_thumb.jp

(Met Lika, IL, North) Met Lika and his FFF 2016 partner Darren Calver showed us that quality fish can be captured despite weather conditions that feature windchills hovering around 0°! Met will take home a Lucky 13 award for his 6:25 a.m. capture (just 25 minutes shy of HOF status)! His double digit average was impressive. Congrats, Met! FFF 2016 data for Met Lika: Big Carp-15-0, Total Weight-59-2, Total Number of Carp-5, Small Carp-9-8, Overall Average-11-13.
post-6148-0-74602200-1451703010_thumb.jp

(Kevin Miller, RI or MA, North) I don’t know what gets into some of us on January 1 and has us fishing at midnight? Kevin Miller was on the bank early and recorded a Hall of Fame carp at 1:29 a.m. to be the fifth angler of 2016 to catch a carp. Congrats, Kevin! FFF 2016 data for Kevin Miller: Big Carp-10-3, Total Weight-18-8, Total Number of Carp-2, Small Carp-8-5, Big Mirror-8-5,, Overall Average-9-4.

(Ian Morris, CA, South) The trials and tribulations of carp gear! Ian Morris caught several quality fish, but a low-battery scale and a frozen camera left Ian without anything to post for his efforts! The camera finally warmed up to help Ian win first place in the FFF 2016 Sunrise Photo competition. Congrats, Ian!

(Dave Pickering, RI, North) It’s always such a pleasure seeing CAG BoD members participating in CAG activities (and a hint of a suggestion to those who don't). Dave Pickering is among the most active CAG Board members in these events and even greater plaudits are sent Dave’s way for organizing an FFF outing for a group of Rhode Island carpers (Well done, sir!). Dave took home a 3rd Place Baby-North award with his 5-6 and was also among the Lucky 13 award winners with a 9:33 a.m. capture. Dave's Jerome Adventure Tale for FFF 2016 also took third place honors. Congrats, Dave! FFF 2016 data for Dave Pickering: Big Carp-6-0, Total Weight-11-6, Total Number of Carp-2, Small Carp-5-6, Overall Average-5-11.
post-1472-0-42706300-1451688621_thumb.jp

(Shawn Rafter, NY, North) Shawn Rafter dominated FFF 2016 in the North Zone! It’s not easy to win three categories, but Shawn accomplished the difficult fete with first fish of the year (12:10 a.m. and Hall of Fame status); Big Fish of FFF 2016 which, I understand, is a new FFF record at 35-10; and high total weight (153-8). Shawn and his partner Mike Keegan put on a carp catching clinic. Outstanding! Congrats, Shawn! FFF 2016 data for Shawn Rafter: Big Carp-35-10, Total Weight-153-8, Total Number of Carp-7, Small Carp-17-12, Overall Average-21-15.

(Todd Richer, RI, North) A loyal participant in FFF, Todd Richer seems to always come through with catches, or at least a valiant effort, at every First Fishing Folly! Todd was among the Lucky 13 award winners with a 9:36 a.m. capture. His results showed a nice bag of four carp. Congrats, Todd! FFF 2016 data for Todd Richer: Big Carp-9-7, Total Weight-26-12, Total Number of Carp-4, Small Carp-5-9, Big Mirror-9-7, Overall Average-6-11.

(Dr. Rob Schoborg, TN, South) Rob led the way for all FFF participants with a marathon session and much to show for it! Twenty-four carp were weighed on Rob’s scales, and they were good for a 144-12 total that took first in the Emperor-South Division. His FFF 2016 Jerome Adventure Tale was also a first place winner! Rob was a Hall of Famer again with a 12:21 a.m catch, just one minute off the second place early carp. He also took 2nd in the Baby-South Division with a 3-6. Rob and his sister Kim Guirl definitely set a formidable standard for future First Fishing Follies! Congrats, Rob! FFF 2016 data for Rob Schoborg: Big Carp-9-13, Total Weight-144-12, Total Number of Carp-24, Small Carp-3-6, Overall Average-6-1.

(Jim Schultz, NY, North) Jim Schultz' carp photo didn't meet submission criteria, but his motivation is obvious. Jim reports, "I was by myself and the best I could do was get my foot in the picture as I didn't want to keep the fish out of water any longer than necessary. This was my first trip for carp and I forgot half the things I needed and the stuff I did bring such as my new fishhunter sonar and sports camera didn't work. I estimated the fish was about 25 inches long based on my foot and probably 7 to 10 pounds in weight. I know I have failed to comply with the rules but wanted to let you know that I did fish the tournament. As I said to my family it's nice to do something new on New Years at 75 years of age. Thanks for the incentive the tournament provided to get me down to the lake." Thanks, Jim, and congrats!.

(Iain Sorrell, CT, North) CAG VP Iain Sorrell forgot to weigh this nice mirror, so it isn't eligible for awards, but it's a great pic and a beautiful fish. Thanks, Iain, for participating in FFF 2016 and congrats on the catch!
post-479-0-61159700-1451686927_thumb.jpg
(Willem van Schalkwyk, TX, South) Yet another CAG Board member, IT guru Willem van Schalkwyk caught four very nice carp throughout the day. i was sorry to hear, though, that Willem's son, Chris, picked up a virus and couldn't fish. Willem is a member of the FFF 2016 Hall of Fame with a 1:50 a.m., 5th fish catch. He also took second in the Monster-South Division with a 14-6, and placed third in Baby-South competition with an 8-12. Congrats, Willem! FFF 2016 data for Willem van Schalkwyk: Big Carp-14-6, Total Weight-47-8, Total Number of Carp-4, Small Carp-8-12, Overall Average-11-14.

(Frank Rink, IL, North) Even Frank Rink was able to manage eight carp in a snow-swollen, fast, dirty DesPlaines River. His 2:37 a.m. 17-5 qualified as an FFF 2016 Hall of Fame entry. FFF 2016 data for Frank Rink: Big Carp-17-5, Total Weight-88-7, Total Number of Carp-8, Small Carp-6-2, Overall Average-11-1.

The FFF 2016 Jerome Adventure Tale Award:

The FFF 2016 Jerome Adventure Tale Award involves a summary of your FFF experience with pictures (if available). Many of you have submitted interesting FFF summaries with accompanying photos in the past. In honor of Jerome Moisand's quick wit, photography skills, way with words, and dedication to CAG and FFF, we are adding an award category for the best written summaries with photographs of your 2016 FFF adventure. Those will be judged by a panel consisting of Jerome Moisand and myself. The winner will receive a gift certificate of $25 and a downloadable, frameable certificate. The second place winner will receive a $15 gift certificate and a downloadable, frameable certificate. The third place winner will receive a $10 gift certificate and a downloadable, frameable certificate.

Winners are to click on the certificate link below to access its full size. Feel free to save and print your certificate for your personal use, or just take a look at it and know that CAG and I appreciate your involvement in the FFF 2016 event.

Also, look for a PM from me about your prize. I will either send you a gift certificate code to use with a CAG vendor, or I will request your email address to which a gift certificate will be sent to you. Congratulations! --Frank Rink, FFF 2016, ’15, ‘14 Coordinator

The FFF 2016 Sunrise Photo Award:

The FFF Sunrise Award goes to every FFF 2016 registrant who submits a photograph of the first sunrise of the year. The primary intention of this category is to share some fabulous January 1 photos with fellow CAG anglers. In fact, if it’s too foggy, cloudy, snowy, or rainy, you can still take a picture at the approximate time of sunrise. The picture may or may not include a fish, but it has to include at least some kind of fishing equipment (rod, pod, net, etc.). Anyone submitting a sunrise picture earns an FFF 2016 Sunrise certificate and will also vie for a top three prize.
