RESULTS - January 1 "Happy New Year - FFF Fish-In" at Joliet, IL

CAG members cursed at “Happy New Year - FFF Fish-In" at Joliet’s Jackson Street Venue

Having fished the Carp Anglers Group’s (CAG) January 1 First Fishing Folly (FFF) 2016 alone at a swollen, chocolate milk Des Plaines River in Joliet, IL, I thought it would be much more fun to have a group activity in 2017.  Consequently, I combined CAG's national FFF event with a local Fish-In.

Due to the generous response of many of our Joliet event regulars, seven anglers participated in the “Happy New Year - FFF Fish-In" at Joliet’s Jackson Street venue:  Chad Bettisch, Dave Marceau, Anthony Hartung, Tony Donato, Cory Bohmann, Larry Seeman, and Frank Rink.

Due to the social nature of a fish-in, a few medals, rather than cash provided some impetus for participation.

But, getting back to the title of this summary, five of the seven Fish-In participants also registered for FFF 2017 as current CAG members.  Unfortunately for all five of us CAG members, we all blanked at the 12:00 midnight to 8:00 a.m. Fish-In.  Winners were former, but not current, members.

But organizational affiliation does not really matter all that much.  The camaraderie and good will of fishing as a group in the middle of the night on January 1 means much more.  It was an enjoyable experience despite the crazy hours and the lack of fish!

There’s not much to report about the actual fishing.  Two fish were captured.  The river was unlike anything I had ever seen.  It was calm and ripple-free, like a lake, with little current.  My guess would be that the fish were spread out in the river as they had little or no current to fight.

The two anglers who caught fish did well on a night in which the fishing was not good.

Plaudits to Cory Bohmann who captured a 7-9 from peg J-2 at about 3:30 a.m.

That single fish had Cory taking the 1st place medal for total weight, 1st place medal for big fish, 1st place medal for 1st fish of the event, and 2nd place medal for smallest fish.

Cory also won the optional $10 side-pot for total number of fish (its weight broke the tie between Cory and Larry Seeman).  He also took home Larry Seeman’s donation of a  “surprise bucket,” valued at over $70 and awarded for the first fish.

Larry Seeman recorded the only other carp of the fish-in with a 5-9 netted at 4:30 a.m.  Larry’s entry won the 1st place medal for smallest carp, 2nd place medal for big fish, 2nd place medal for total weight, and 2nd place medal for 1st fish.

Larry tied for most fish caught with one but lost the tie-breaker based on weight.  He did win a Brita pitcher, donated by Cory Bohmann for second fish of the event.

After the 8:00 a.m fish-in conclusion, CAG members Dave Marceau, Anthony Hartung, and Frank Rink went to another venue on the DesPlaines River at Joliet in an attempt not to be shut-out of CAG’s FFF 2017, and they caught five small fish between them.  But that bite shut down by 10:00 a.m.

Big thanks to Larry Seeman for bringing chili, beverages, a generator and a heater that kept all of us in good spirits throughout the event.

Big thanks to Chad Bettisch for bringing cupcakes, to Larry Seeman for donating the prize bucket and to Cory Bohmann for donating the Brita pitcher.

Most of all, big thanks to all who rang in the New Year on the bank at Jackson Street’s venue:  Chad Bettisch, Dave Marceau, Anthony Hartung, Tony Donato, Cory Bohmann, Larry Seeman, and Frank Rink.
