Joliet, Illinois will be the site of a two-man team carp tournament on December 31, 2017 to January 1, 2018 to coincide, somewhat, with CAG's national First Fishing Folly (FFF 2018) event!

Sign up on this thread for the Sunday/Monday, December 31, 2017/January 1, 2018 "FFF 2018 BIG 6 TEAM TOURNAMENT" at Joliet from 11:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m.!

Participating anglers, so far (5):

1. Frank Rink
2. Anthony Hartung
3. Cory Bohmann
4. Chad Bettisch
5. Justin Keaton

CAG's FFF 2018 on January 1, 2018 and a tournament to loosely coincide with it pose some unique problems. FFF contenders are typically individual anglers who fish solo, thereby having the best chance for any carp in the area. Conversely, a tournament typically features several anglers in the same general area competing heavily for the carp bite.

How do I reconcile one with the other? Keeping all that in mind in addition to my primary goal of safety for anglers out in the middle of the night in Joliet on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, here are parameters for the December 31/January 1 “FFF 2018 Big 6 Team Tournament” at Joliet:

1. The “FFF 2018 Big 6 Team Tournament” will feature a team format, but you don't have to arrange for a teammate. We will cover that at the draw. You need not be a CAG member to participate, although it is encouraged.

Team draw and peg choice will take place at 10:00 p.m. at the Jackson Street venue on 12/31/17. Fishing for this tournament will be from 11:00 p.m. on 12/31/17 through 7:00 a.m. on 1/1/18. Unlike other tournaments, you may begin chumming as soon as you arrive at your fishing location.

2. Team assignment/Peg choice procedures: At 10:00 p.m. sharp at the parking lot just southeast of the Jackson Street Bridge, participating anglers will be part of a drawing to determine team assignments and the order for peg choice.

25151993_1535905096476705_63446073082569707_n.jpg

For team assignments, anglers will have their names placed in a bag. The first two names drawn will be Team 1, the next two will be Team 2 and so on. This allows a safety/buddy system by which two anglers fish in close proximity to one another, thereby providing some safety for participants fishing throughout the Joliet venue. Note: It's December/January, and the chance for cold weather is a given. If anglers arrive in the same car, and to assure some warmth if needed, they may fish as a team rather than being subject to the draw to determine teammates. However, all others (those who arrive alone) are subject to the random draw procedure to determine teams.

If there is an odd number of anglers who enter, the organizer will volunteer to be a team-of-one. That individual may use up to eight rods. If someone else wants to be a team-of-one, he is to indicate that before the team draw, and he will be a team-of-one. Or, if there is more than one angler wanting to fish alone, a drawing will determine who fishes alone.

Because of this team system, fishing locations will be groupings of pegs. The following pegs will be grouped as one fishing area each: Pegs 1 to 4, pegs 4 to 8, pegs 9 to 12, pegs 13 to 16, pegs 17 to 19, pegs 20 to 22, pegs 23 to 24E, Pegs J-1 and J-2 (could be a little tight for 8 rods), Pegs J-3 to J-6, Pegs J-7 to J-10, and Pegs J-11 to J-14.

New teammates will have a few minutes to discuss their preferred areas/peg groupings. Next, a draw will be conducted to determine order of location choice. The order of peg choice draw will be in the chronological order that anglers arrived at the venue. The team that draws the #1 chip will have first choice of peg grouping. The team that draws the #2 chip will have second choice, and so on. Peg choices will be made in the order of chip numbers drawn.

Most Team fishing sections have shared borders beyond which you are not to cast. Here is a brief summary.

A. The border between west bank pegs 1-4 (Team section 1) and 5-8 (Team section 2) will be the middle bench in the grouping of three benches in the middle of pegs 1-8.

B. The border between west bank pegs 9-12 (Team section 3) and 13-16 (Team section 4) will be the south edge of the Bicentennial Park Building/Theater.

C. The border between east bank pegs 17-19 (Team section 5) and 20-22 (Team section 6) will be the fifth window (these are the large windows) from the south corner of the Harrah's Casino building.

D. The east bank section including pegs 23-24E (Team section 7) has the bridge as its north border. Anglers can cast beyond peg 24E on the south end but from a position no more than 20 feet from the peg flag.

E. The Jackson St. section including pegs J-1-2 (Team section J-1) has structures as borders (The Jackson St. Bridge on the NW edge and the slip wall on the east edge).

F. The Jackson venue border between pegs J3-6 (Team section J-2), J7-10 (Team section J-3), and J11-14 (Team section J-4) will be marked by flags. Do not cast beyond these flags. The team choosing section J-4 (pegs J11-14) can cast south of peg J-14 but from a position no more than 20 feet from the peg flag.

Teammates may fish anywhere within that peg grouping. You are not limited to fishing at the usual peg flags.

Anglers arriving after 10:00 p.m. will draw, using the same format as the 10:00 p.m. draw, to determine choice of whatever pegs remain. There are no call-in peg choices, nor can someone choose for you in your absence. "You snooze, you lose."|

3. Each team may fish with up to eight rods. To allow some elbow room and some choices, this tournament is limited to 16 anglers (8 teams)!

4. Date, Peg Choice, Time Parameters for Tournament, Format: Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 11:00 p.m. will mark the start of the Illinois Tournament Series' "FFF 2018 Big 6" Team Tournament at Joliet's DesPlaines River. The event will end at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, January 1, 2018!

The event will also feature teams of two, but teams will be determined via draw rather than you having to find a teammate (unless you ride with an angler to the venue).

This event will feature a Big 6 format. Big 6 means the biggest six carp captured by a team of two anglers. However, one member of the team may catch all of the fish. Peg choice is at 10:00 p.m. at the Jackson Street venue!

25158292_1535905226476692_3509056955896032454_n.jpg

5. Entry: Entry is $20 per angler for the tournament with 100% payout to winning teams at a rate of 50% for 1st, 30% for 2nd, and 20% for 3rd for the Big 6 event. A trophy for first and medals for 2nd and 3rd will be awarded.

6. Optional Contest: There will be an optional $10 per individual contest for most carp caught by a team with 100% payout to the top two teams at a 60%-40% split (Winner-take-all if less than six teams participate). Teams are eligible only if both teammates participate.

7. Team Assignments, Peg Choice Time and Place: Team assignments and peg choice will take place at 10:00 p.m. sharp at the Jackson Street parking lot just south of the Bridge St./Jackson St. bridge. If possible, please arrive a few minutes early for fee payment, waiver signature, scorecard distribution, meet and greet, etc.

8. Number of rods: Please note that each team may fish with up to eight rods (8 per team). IDNR requires that your third rod and beyond are marked with your name and address. In addition, teammates may play one another's catches if needed.

9. Trophies/Medals: In addition to the monetary prizes, trophies will be awarded to the Big 6 first place team. Medals for Big 6 2nd, and 3rd place and to the top two "Total Number of Carp" winners, and to a "specialty" category winner will be awarded. The "specialty" category will be announced at team draw.

10. Permits, Approvals, Insurance, Waivers: Since all will be new to the 2018 Illinois Tournament Series events, you will be required to sign a waiver of liability prior to your participation. I have acquired all required insurance and approvals (Joliet, IDNR) for this event.

11. Moving to Different Pegs: Due to the length of this tournament, movement to an unoccupied peg grouping may be made at anytime during the event (first come, first served). However, only one move may be made during the duration of the tournament, and you may not return to your original peg grouping.

24909781_1535905099810038_4204641037341044301_n.jpg

Teammates will determine at which specific location each of them will fish in their peg grouping. At past team events, some team members alternate locations at "halftime," some just stay where they are since it is a team event, and some alternate individual location choices until all rods are placed.

12. Fair Play, Witnessing Catches: During team tournaments, teams may weigh and witness their own fish. In addition, a teammate may play the other teammate's fish! Please be honest with your recorded weights. Don't forget to tare your sling.

Sign up on this thread if interested in participating on December 31/January 1.

Thanks for your consideration! —Dr. Frank Rink, Tournament organizer

P.S.  For CAG members, this event can serve as both a local tournament and a vehicle for your national FFF 2018 experience!

Right now we're at three teams (five anglers - 2+2+1). Considering the cold and the time parameters of the tournament and the difficulty for some to be there, I've decided that that's enough to make this a GO for a team event!

However, with three tea
ms, it'll be a winner-take-all scenario for both Big 6 and optional Most-Carp contests. If we get 5 teams, it'll be a 60%-40% split for Big 6 and winner-take-all for the Most-Carp contest. Six or more teams will be 50%-30%-20% for Big 6 and 60%-40% for optional Most-Carp.

No matter what the monetary payout, trophies for the first place team and medals for the 2nd and 3rd place teams will be awarded in the Big 6 event. Medals will go to the top two participating teams in the optional Most-Carp contest. Good luck.

This Big 6 Team Tournament at Joliet is still a GO, but I want to warn participants that the forecast now has windchills that will be below 0° throughout the event. We are to see a high of 6° on 1/1/18 at Joliet and a low of -5° with a HIGH "real feel" temp of -3°. I'd usually cancel under such conditions, but it's FFF 2018, so I'll be there. If you make it, great. If not, it's certainly understandable. - Frank

Of course, there's still room for more participants should you love fishing for carp in sub-0° conditions!:bonk:

With windchills expected to be at -20° throughout the night, I am actually encouraged that six anglers will be participating in the "FFF 2018 Big 6 Team Tournament."  Cash prizes may be on the "slim" side, but it looks as if everyone will go home with some hardware.  In addition to two trophies for the winning Big 6 team, ten medals will be awarded as follows:

Second place medals for the 2nd place Big 6 Team
Third place medals for the 3rd place Big 6 Team
First place medals for the 1st place Most-Carp Team (optional contest)
Second place medals for the 2nd place Most-Carp Team (optional contest)
First place medals for the 1st place Specialty Event Team (1st carp of 2018/1st carp after midnight)

Good luck.  Be prepared for the weather!  Drive safely.  Peg choice is at 10:00 p.m. at the Jackson St. pegs.

DUE TO DWINDLING NUMBERS OF PARTICIPANTS AND A FORECAST FOR DANGEROUSLY COLD TEMPERATURES, THE BIG 6 TOURNAMENT IS CANCELLED.

With Chad and Dave just bowing out in the past hour, I really don't think it's feasible to conduct a team tournament or any tournament, for that matter, with just four participants, especially in light of the frigid forecast. Consequently, the tournament is canceled. My apologies to Anthony, Cory, and Emilio for the late notice.

I will participate in FFF 2018 but not until 6:00 or 7:00 a.m. on Monday morning close to sunrise. I'll probably try Jackson Street first and then move to 9 or 8 or 1 if Jackson doesn't pan out. Please feel free to join me if you wish. Best of luck! -- Frank
