Right after coming back from the island where we were located, my partner Jim absolutely wanted to see the now famous peg #80. So we drove off out there, and to our surprise Tim and Steve were still there packing and duly celebrating with champagne -- what else?

Here are two pics of the swim, doesn't seem that special, I have to say! But well, it was indeed very special for 5 days & nights, my partner just couldn't believe the hear the news every hour, with tens and tens of pounds being added to Tim & Steve score almost every time... Totally mind boggling.
Some people will reduce the win to "luck peg draw". I do not buy that at all. Sure, schools of carp came to this peg and this didn't happen to everybody, far from it, but creating the circumstances for it to happen and more important, keeping it productive for several days, finding the right balance between feeding them enough yet catch on a regular basis, I really don't know how they did it, but this was clearly world-class angling. =================== Got a small problem... See the pics in a later post below... -------------------- Jerome Moisand, Arlington MA

I would like to add that Tim & Steve were incredibly gracious in speaking with us and allowing us to take those pictures. I understand that the media pressure has been extremely high on them during this event, and yet they handled every demand so gracefully. They were also very generous in spontaneously giving fishing gear to every passerby, including us. Marius (my co-driver) got tons of boilies just by stopping by and chatting for 20 minutes with them!
I also would like to quote one sentence from Tim's speech during the award ceremony: "The St Lawrence is the best fishing venue for carp in the entire world" (or something to this effect). I don't know if he meant it or was being gracious, but in any case, this was really a nice thing to say. If two guys ever deserved to become world champions, I believe those were the ones. -------------------- Jerome Moisand, Arlington MA

I heard that anabolic steroids turned up in their urine tests and that they could be stripped of the victory.

Now, the award ceremony... The space close to the podium was more packed than a paylaker favorite bait... Quite tough to take pictures!
Anyway, here are two pics of the undisputed world champions.

Nice pics mate - a class act indeed and, as has been often said, great amabassadors. And, lest we forget, this is their second win so luck schmuck.

QUOTE (Jerome @ Jun 12 2005, 02:32 PM) Now, the award ceremony... The space close to the podium was more packed than a paylaker favorite bait... Quite tough to take pictures! Anyway, here are two pics of the undisputed world champions. Thanks Jerome for your pics . I weighed their very first carp caught. We then decided to assign the unlucky chap Phil Davenport to handle the series of swims there. I believe Phil weighed most of the fish from a four mile area East of the Iroquois dam. A phenomenon was realized as Phil then handled the early success of Jim West and bait boat Charlie who surged for a time until the swim failed to produce. The Hutchinson guys next to the winners did well and they say they lost fourteen fish. Also in that early mix was the Philly fish.org guys of Matt and Louie who lost many fish due to a submerged tree before them, although they recognize the tree may also have been the structure which helped these good guys come in third. Stew and John were late comers that had their swim turn on as the first place turned slow. I arrived to weigh three of their fish as they caught another. happy to see these ex-pat Brits pose before Ole glory for their photos. My pleasure to know them and to have fished the St L with Stew in the past. ( I still have my T-shirt Stew) Yes, all the winners come from a section of the river that accounted for many pounds, but yet were a long distance apart. That is something to say about the river. I will personally analyze pegs to river locations and attempt to draw a conclusion from day to day. It is noteworthy no exceptionally large fish came from those swims, rather from very distant parts of the river. As for those like me that have spent years in study on the river, much is to be learned. I have the benefit of being able to discuss this with my guide friends, and now believe Terry to also be a river guru. One of my goals was continued river intelligentsia, a hobby with me. I get questions from so many all year about the river. I believe you can never master it. It is alive unto itself. Thanks. al |

By the way, while Scott's partner paid his entry into the contest, I arrived at his swim to watch Scott's partner catch and play in a beautiful fish. Then we weighed it in. Where was Scott? 100 yards away spodding for the Czech womens team. Whats with that Scott. Where they wearing bikinis or what? al PS, just so no one thinks this illegal. The girls dropped out of the tourney to pleasure fish, and Scott was fishing for pleasure! |
