In my homeland, parents are not welcome to interfere at all with the school day. In the US, heck, this is quite different, and we are solicited quite a lot. So my wife ended up signing me up for a "Special Day" for my son Felix, at his pre-school. The point was to deliver a 15 minutes speech about fishing to 5 years old kids...
Now how long do you think a 5 years old is going to listen to a guy with a very thick accent like me? 30 seconds? 20? So I started to strategize... PS. Felix, when asked who he brought today, started to write "Mom" in BIG letters. Yes, it was true. When the teacher pointed out that somebody else was here, he added "Dad"... in very small letters...

I started by showing a fishing rod (they knew what it was, good start!) and the big net (oh! ah!). And I claimed that I would catch a fish in the classroom. Yeah, right mister, stop the BS, were they thinking...
Well, I said that I had found a nice spot and positioned my (very fake but safe!) "bait". After showing them a can of sweet corn though! Then set up the rod on the rod pod, trying to avoid making the beepers issue any sound... then we waited for a minute...

Yes! "something" did start to circle around the bait.
We played the "fish" for a little while, and with Felix's help (he's quite handy with a 9-feet rod!), we landed the "big one". The big Euro net was definitely needed in this case! <_<

Then we had to weigh the "fish". So we put it in a big carp sack, and used our 100 pounds scale! I claimed 26 pounds, but... well...

I asked "is it a real fish?". Smart kids, they said "no, it's a mom". How could they guess?
So I said "nope, it's a real fish". Yeah, right mister, cut the crap... We hid the "fish" behind the carp sack, we made the kids say "Fish O Magic" ten times... And they started to hear loud splashes behind the curtain.... And a real carp appeared. I'm not quite sure which was the most startled, the kids or the carp! Most of the kids turned out to be brave, girls first, I have to say... And finally Felix came to admire the shiny fish.

The excitement rose 2 or 3 levels and the teachers had a bit of a hard time making all kids sit down... I explained "catch and release" and the carp was back to its big blue container (man, it was heavy!).
Then I showed some pics of real fish (ok, ok, maybe a certain koi was in there; oh yes, and a certain 24lb mirror; oh yes, and a certain 34lb from the St Lawrence, etc!), and... this was it. My wife had prepared some fish-shaped cookies and the kids were ravenous after such a fishing session! Yes, Felix has a Special Day! PS. I heard tonight that the school director wasn't happy. Not that we splashed a bit the floor or that we brought a live fish in the school, or allowed the kids to touch it (I was fearing the lawsuit!), but... that we didn't call her to see the fish!

That's a great story! Maybe we'll get some CAGer's out of them in a few years.

Way to go Jerome !!! You are one cool Dad !!
Don't fret about felix writing Dad smaller than Mom ..Moms are more important to a 5 year old..Its writting carp larger that I would worry about.. -------------------- Happy when fishing !
