As I have seen, they spawn at different times, carp are just not normal fish, I have also heard of second spawns, a tagged fish re-caught in the spawning ground with a second belly of eggs in September when they had tagged her in the same place in June. I have observed what appears to be spawning activity till October and staring a week before fishing season here opens April 28th. What looks like spawning may not mean all of those fish are, Carp are notoriously famous for frolicking. I have fished on the edge of serious spawning activity this Spring and pulled out some great fish. I think their activity draws attention from even non-spawning fish. Fishing the outer limits of the spawning activity allows You to A) Know where they are.
According to an Aquaculture Study on Carp from a NY School, In tropical regions carp may have a second spawn. Normally carp should only spawn once though with as many eggs as 2,600,000 eggs recorded in one female. Spawning can be affected by water temperature, increased O2 or CO2 and food sources. With less food carp may scatter eggs a few at a time over a period of weeks or more. In more temperate places which get a pronounce 4 seasons a year, early Spring to Mid Summer with early Spring being the busiest spawning time. Carp can spawn as early as 2 years old and eggs can hatch within 4 days from when they were fertilised. The amount of light per day and barometric pressure can affect both fishing conditions and spawning. they say that research has proven that UV rays and the amount a carp recieves can trigger hormones that brings about the spawn. So you see, there is no answer, specifically, but there is a chance to catch pre and post spawn fish off of the edge of a spawning site. Don't cast into it though, no sense spooking fish that are not into biting at the time. A good way to sum it up is that most of the spawning should be done by July in most parts of North America, not all, but I would say by the time June finishes heating up the water, a majority will be out of spawning mode. My favorite time to catch is in Pre-spawn though still, it's nice to get the extra pounds of eggs weighing down the scales. I think alot of us will admit to some of our biggest fish being loaded females. -------------------- 2006 Common Carp 27.4 lbs crawler with 2 sweetcorn
PB Mirror Carp 24.0 lbs Crawler threaded 5 - 20+ 32 - double digits 17 - under 10lbs 11 - Redhorse suckers 6 - hefty crawdad with attitude 1 - Burbot 23 walleye that I wish would have been carp. |

Lance,
I believe that the spawn has been ongoing on your lake for a few weeks, since I fish it to. It just happens at different times in different parts of the lake. I fished your lake monday and had 9 carp and 1 buff. Biggest carp was 21lb with a big belly. My biggest suggestion would be to switch up you baits. All these were caught on packbait. I have not caught a fish there on boilies for two weeks. The ones I caught in the past were on pop ups fished with packbait. Try different baits and you will catch more fish. PM me and I will gladly tell you how I am fishing. Kent |

Is there some kind of a chart that can show me at what time/weather carp spawn? I have saw catfish charts that tell you geographically when and where. Any Ideas folks?

I used to have a chart, but I cnat seem to find it. It had things like when the carp move in to shallows for prespawn, when carp actually spawn. etc
