As previously reported, I've started to bait every other day in a local venue where next to nobody fishes those days. And a promising one where the average size seems quite high, and a certain 25+ really made my day last week-end.
So of course, I was back at it on Friday morning at 6AM. It didn't take long to get a run. Hook pull. Darn. So I try again. Run. Line break. You have to be kidding me. Try again. Ahah, I land a very nice 17 pounder, cool, the curse is over. Er... two more runs, two more fish lost. Outcome of the morning: a nice 17 pounder, and four fish lost. 80% loss in 2 hours of fishing. Man, that's not quite right. Being somewhat frustrated, I decided to go back at the end of the afternoon. Here I was at 5PM, setting up my gear. Not much activity for a while, but at 6PM, a screaming run. And when I say screaming, I mean SCREAMING! I set the hook. Line break. Now I use Powerpro 50lb, this isn't supposed to break that easily. Actually, I almost never get a line break. Fuming, I set up a new rig, re-cast, and while I was putting the rod on the pod, I noticed the other rod twitching. Sure enough, one minute later, I got a run. I play it a while, it got badly stuck in a weed bed, but I got it out of it and close to shore. Er... Second run on the rod I had recast a few minutes earlier. So I clumsily take the 2nd rod (maybe I should have left it alone), but the fish gets stuck in another weed bed and I lost it... Back to the first fish... Which got unhooked because I gave him a bit of leeway while juggling with my rods... Runs: 3. Landed: 0. Ain't right at all. Ok, back to business, recast, wait a bit, a run. Ah yes, I land this one, very nice fight, but that was "only" a low double. My wife gives me a call, usually she's a lucky charm. Well, it kind of worked, I had a run while speaking to her. Lost it. I recast, start to call her back, another run, lost it. Right away, my other rod got to life, and... yeah, you got the pattern, lost it. I lost 3 fish in less than 5 minutes. Now, that's a record. It's getting dark, I'm not supposed to stay there (this venue is closed at night), but I'm so frustrated that I want to land a fish, any fish. Another run. Actually a double run. This time, I'm less clumsy, I keep both lines tight, but fish#1 gets to weed bed #1. Fish #2 gets to weed bed #2. I try to pull them out of there very gently, and all I got was kilotons of weed and no fish. One last cast. I get a run within minutes. Line break. ![]() I got so disgusted, I left, although fish were biting like crazy. This all happened in less than 2 hours. Bottomline of the evening: 10 runs, 9 lost. 90% loss. Now who ever did "better" than that? -------------------- Jerome Moisand, Arlington MA

Sounds like Ford lake, Whats on the bottom of the lake?, Ford lake were I fish has a ton of zebra muscles along the shelf, The fish like to run along them cutting the line, maybe your having the same problem!, maybe try 2 or 3ft of lead core as It may help.

It sounds like your water is loading up with zebra mussels. Same thing is happening here. Places that used to be real good are about impossible to land a fish at now because of line cuts. And that is with 50# power pro.
The sad thing is the zebra's are definately on the increase all over. And don't take it to hear. We all have days like yours now and then. Fortunately not frequently, but enough so it keeps you on your toes. -Ken |

Actually, I don't think there are mussels in this pond. At least I didn't see any signs of them. But this is definitely a big drop-off and I guess some underwater sharp rocks explained the line cuts. The thick weeds were another problem, and those fish knew very well where to go...
I think I'm going to respool with 65lb PP and try to play them at a distance. Plus check my hooks & hair rigs more carefully. Maybe use some baitholder hooks to avoid losing the fish when having to pull hard through the weeds. My baiting campaign works well, they obviously loved the bait (a new complicated recipe from my wife), so those fish will not get away so easily even if I'm a serious contender for the worst angler of the month... -------------------- Jerome Moisand, Arlington MA

Sorry to hear the tough luck JM. It happens, those weeds are frustrating on that venue.
