I haven't been on lately so I thought I would update some of the St. Lawrence FFF plans in case anyone wants to join in the fun. Looks like right now we are going to have 2 locations and strategies in order to find out what will be best. Of course the location we fished last year is already frozen over but we still plan on fishing that location ice fishing style. Looks like myself, Steve Conger (guy who won the CAG cup after the jr. event) and his son Matt will be drilling holes and setting tip-ups on Kentner's Bay (site of last year's FFF dominance). Shawn Rafter (defending champ) and his wife and crew are planning on setting up euro style on an open warm water discharge area in Massena.
Shawn and I talked the other day and we figure we will keep in touch via cell phone and we will relocate to whatever area is catching. If anyone wants to make the trip up here to take your chances let me know so we can link up. Last year's open water was a fluke for us so we are being cautiously optimistic that we can have some repeat success this year. The only thing that might change my plans is my wife is due for our 3rd daughter on Jan 11th. My first two daughters came 2 and 3 weeks early respectfully so we will be on red alert from December 20th on. I actually broke down and finally got a cell phone just for the occassion. Peace Ed That sounds great.........but unfortunately Tracy and I will be on a red-eye home from San Francisco on the 31st. So no FFF for me this year. Iain. p.s. Well, we had a hell of a good time, but sadly no fish to report. We had two different groups out and the last report I heard from the Shawn Rafter crew that was fishing some open warm water by one of the plants in Massena they didn't have any by day break.
My group was 7 people strong and we met up at the tackle shop at 11pm on the 31st. We were all loaded up with gear and we were all pumped up. Because of all the heavy snow fall this year in the area we couldn't drive right to the bay were were going to fish so we parked at the end of a long driveway and prepared for the 1/4 mile portage to the ice. We were pulling sleds, and ice shanties loaded with ice augers, shelters, extra cold weather gear and buckets of tip-ups. By the time we broke trail in the knee and waist deep snow we were completly exhausted and despite the 16 degree air temp we started stripping off cloths to cool down. We had our holes that we pre-baited a few days ago re-drilled with my Eskimo Mako 10 inch power auger and started placeing our tip-ups right at mid-night. Our optimism was dashed however because the underwater camera reveled that our bait appeared to be untouched. We were commited however so we put out our spread of around 25 tip-ups between us and prepared for a long cold night. The ice was about 10 inches thick and we were fishing pretty much the same location that we fished over open water last year. We had a few ice shanties up but for the most part we stayed out side sharing each others company and telling our fish stories from the past year. As the night went on the temps dropped. by 6 am the air temp was 8 degrees and the wind was starting to pick up out of the east. Anyone who has ever fished the St. Lawrence River knows that an East wind is usually a bad sign. What started out as a clear starry night turned into a pretty steady snowfall by 7:30am. By 7:30 we hadn't had any flags and despite our warmest arctic clothes we were starting to feel the chill so we decided to call it. Good thing we did, by the time we got all the gear back to the trucks it was a bonafide blizzard going on. By the time we started driving out St. Lawrence county issued a winter storm advisory and suspened all unnessary travel on the roads. Despite not catching we all agreed it was worth it and had a great time trying. I was glad that 4 out of our seven particapants were under the age of 20 and chose to spend their New Years eve doing that crazy thing rather than going out and getting polluted. I had to use my non-digital camera so I will post some pics as soon as I get them back. Peace -------------------- |
