Here is our report from the ponds in Pennsylvania:

0430- Jim (CARPNCAT) caught his first ever mirror carp in water temperatures of 42 degrees and the specimen weighing in at approximately 5.5 pounds. Congratulations Jim!

0304- Jedidiah Fickes (my stepson) caught a mirror weighing in at a mere 14 ounces in 42 degree water.

0050- Ray Eichelberger (hey that's me) caught a 12 ounce mirror in 42 degree water while float fishing with the Scooby Doo rod.

0005-Ray (my first catch of 2008) was pleasantly surprised when float fishing with the Scooby Doo rod actually hooked and landed a 10 pound common in 42 degree water.

There was another angler in our small party who dispite his valiant efforts was not fortunate enough to do battle with any carp on this particular day. This is highly unusual as this guy is usually a carp fishing machine.
I will try to write a full story detailing things ASAP.

Good luck Tommy!

Ray

Rob thanks again for setting this up. I had a great time despite things being carp-less which was weird, I can't wait to give it another shot. Bill, Louis, it was nice meeting you guys! smile.gif

Congrats to all who have caught carp on this FFF day!

Mad Chummer and I fished for only a few hours today. The wind was really whipping and we were geared for float fishing. I caught 3 Rainbow Trout but no carp sad.gif . Matt blanked. Still was gr8 to start off another season.

Congrats to all!
Following my tratitions, I also did some fishing the last, and the first day of the year. Yesterday afternoon, I had a 2 hour session between 1:30-3:30, and managed to get a white sucker, one 4 lbs baby, and his older 13 lbs relative. Today my wife let me go again during the day, rolleyes.gif and I had a little more fun, by getting out 6 carps, and 1 small white sucker. I did not measure them today, but they were between 6-14 lbs. This was my first fishing since last October, so the feeling was unbelieveable. It is very addicting, but sadly from tomorrow I have to work again. sad.gif

It was almost 3am when I got in bed so I bet quite a few fish came out before I even pulled my dizzy head out of bed at 10:30am. I end up picking a few beer bottles from the corners of the house, wash some dishes ,have something to eat and off to the river to my usual spot. I set up around 12:30pm or so ( Pat should know the exact time since he saw me unpack) and rods went out- then a few scary moments putting up umbrella in 20 miles N wind by myself, I measure the temperature and water was 42.8 and air 44 but it was over 50F inside the umbrella so I opened Terry Hearn’s book smile.gif A few minutes later a take on far out rod, it took few minutes and pretty looking mirror was in the net 21 ¾ lb
NICE just the way I like it and now the funny thing-- fish is still in the net and I wanted to take the hook out before lifting it up on the bank, so I bend down and my hook is in the left corner of the mouth so I pull it out and to my surprise there was no line attached to it ??????????? took me few seconds to realize that there is another hook in the right corner of the mouth with the line and bait attached, I guess me or Marlene lost the mirror few days ago just to catch it as my first fish of the year, now when I think about it, my first carp of 2007 was a mirror too, hmmm...
now back to the story, my wife arrived and took some good pictures of the mirror and few minutes later I had another double but I just let it go without pictures, nothing much happened after that and at 3:30pm I had another run on long range rod and this time a common at exactly the same weight 21 ¾ nice and lean, soon after that sun went down temp started to drop and Marlene said goodbye Alex, see you at home.
I stayed a little longer and at 5:30pm I had a double run and landed a 16 and 12 ½ commons with both fish in the same net, gusting winds and all by myself--not an easy task I can tell you that, my hand were frozen so I just took a picture of the fish on the mat, weighed them and then packed up and went home one HAPPY carper in the new 2008.
Best of luck to all of you,
Alex

macfish here. Great job to all who managed to get out. To those who caught anything at all - kudos! Ray, it sounds like you're becoming the Scoobee Doo expert. I wonder if you have the Baby Phone fish? Alex - you're a fishing machine. Your weather was a bit better than ours was. You had some really nice looking fish there. Jonathan

Izaak Walton - Author of "The Complete Angler" in 1653 writes: "The carp is the Queen of Rivers: a stately, a good and a very subtle fish that was not first bred, nor hath been long in England."
Izaak also called the carp the river fox - because "is it a very subtle fish and hard to be caught."
