Domm, Vinnie and I hit the Merrimack at 12:00am. The 'Crack hit us back, as temperatures quickly fell into the low 20's, and by 3:00, we had to bail, as the skin ice was grabbing our lines and heading for Newburyport. I didn't notice, I was dozing in my chair. Domm and I resumed operations a little past 10:00am on the Charles, with Domm breaking the ice (pun certainly intended) at 10:24am, with a 8-13 common. He gradually built a small lead, but at quitting time, I had landed 6 @ 51lbs to his 5@ 41. He recorded the biggest, 12+, but I had my first mirror of the year, at 8lbs and change, 12:24pm. Domm's Baby Phone entry was 6lbs even, IIRC, but we sadly forgot to photograph the bait, er, I mean "catch.". The last fish, I named "Lucky." Only one eye, and I landed it when my feeder rig entangled the factory-snelled Eagle Claw embedded in it's upper lip!

There was ice on the water throughout, so even though surface temperatures were only fractionally above 32F, physics tells us our baits were in 39F water. Most were taken on tutti fruiti Pescaviva, a couple on Concept for You pineapple boilies and a few on tiger nuts; all with method balls. Frankly, location seemed more important than bait. The fish were there to eat. They fought quite vigorously.

I have some photos, but due to the steady, wet snow (air temps ran from about 30F to 35F all morning), everything I brought was drenched, and I want the camera to dry thoroughly before I power it up again.

Izaak also called the carp the river fox - because "is it a very subtle fish and hard to be caught."

I bow humbly, and because the prolonged exposure to cold prevents me from straightening my back fully.

Should this thread be in Stories and Pictures? Somebody feel free to move it if so.

Well I have no pics of fish or sun set. I did not get 1 run all night, Mark M came up from DC to fish with us here in PA. we had ICE forming on the lake and then we had rain then wind and snow moved in. Jake and Josh they was supper JRS for there first time out for a FFF and the nasty weather that we had they hung in there like true CAGERS, even that they are 12 and 9 years old. at the end of the fishing we ended up with 3 flat tires, 1 on Herkels van 1 on my van and 1 on Mark M. truck sorry Mark you had to change it in the snow. Mark brought my new poles that I got from HOPPY they are real nice he all so gave me a real for 1 of them. I did not get to use them this night, so sorry Hoppy that I have no pics for to show ya with fish on them. There was 1 fish got by Al Anderson it was about 7 or 8 pounds. Mark R got some all so His bigest was 17lbs Herk had a pig on but lost it. We had a good crew from CAG here. in all of us was Mark M, Mark R, Herkel, Steve L, Tim, Al A, Jake W, Josh W, Bryan and Bubba D, and Me, So you can see we had a good group of guys

Very glad to see you fared so well in this FFF utterly non-sensical event, Eric. We've been so used to have Domm grab the FFF headlines, it's just about time you show him who's boss! happy.gif

PS. and yeah, yeah, I know, your PB is still bigger than mine, I had to disable signatures on my forum set-up just to stop reading this one, but this will NOT LAST LONG. This is my main resolution for 2008. hammerhead.gif wink.gif

Nicely done guys. Pretty hardcore indeed.

We had the same problem with the ice dragging our lines. It was a tough day to be on the water, I kid you not!

Kuddos to all who made it out yesterday.

Allrighty then. Camera works, I'm not dead from the flu, propichosting is back on line.

31-12-07: It was cold enough...

Yes, the thermometer was jabbed into the skin of ice. It would read all the way down to 32, but that was the best photo. As mentioned, no fish at the "Crack.

01-01-08: Not as cold out, but the water still teetered at freezing at the surface.

Dom "Quixote" finally banked one, and then a double, even.

I eventually decided to get in on the act, including the mirror:

The idea struck me to capture a representative photo of the poor conditions.

Dom outdid me, with a fish-fighting action shot.

The fish in question turned out to be "Lucky," the one-eyed (congenital?) Eagle-Claw bearing carp! This was also a pretty snazzy foul-weather shot.
