macfish here. I agree with Brian. Our local conditions weren't as tough as yours but they were bad enough to keep me in. At least the fish were active enough to bite for you. Kudos! Jonathan

Izaak Walton - Author of "The Complete Angler" in 1653 writes: "The carp is the Queen of Rivers: a stately, a good and a very subtle fish that was not first bred, nor hath been long in England."
Izaak also called the carp the river fox - because "is it a very subtle fish and hard to be caught."

WEATHER IS NO OBJECT AT JOLIET

Horizontal snow, 42° waters, curious police, wind chills by the end of the day at sub-zero levels, slippery canal walls, and some capricious carp couldn't keep CARPBOWL (Mike O. and Heidi), Big Sam (Sam S.), bailybird (Cory B.), bailybird, jr. (Cory B., Jr.), Greenhorn (John M.), and FJR1 (Frank R.) from the 2008 CAG FFF at Bicentennial Park in Joliet, IL on January 1, 2008. Fishing was off and on throughout the night and following day but we did catch some fish as verified by Cory in previous posts and by the following photos, and we had some fun doing it, which is what the FFF is all about.--Frank

IT'S BLURRY BUT IT'S DOCUMENTATION

My P&S camera didn't cooperate very well in the dark and in the snowy conditions, but here's some documentation that bailybird caught fish prior to 6:00 a.m., thereby qualifying him for the 2008 FFF Hall of Fame; and I've also included a photo of my smallest carp entry (16 oz.). I also had a pic of Big Sam and a pre-6:00 a.m. fish, but Cory's photo of Sam in this thread is the same photo.--Frank

Thanks, Mike, for the pics showing Sam with a fish just after midnight and me with my 12:29 a.m. catch. Too bad you couldn't stay longer. I think Cory ended up with 80+ pounds of Carp and I was fortunate to have 100+ pounds. Of course, you've caught more than your share this past year with nearly 1,000 carp for 2007.--Frank

CAMOUFLAGED CARPER

I hope you can see bailybird (Cory B.) in these photos, as he is nicely camouflaged and toasty warm with some cold-weather carping clothes at the 2008 FFF in Joliet. Those are a couple of nice fish, too!--Frank

My 19 lb. 8 oz. FFF Carp

I was fortunate to capture this 19.5 pound carp at about 9:00 a.m. at the 2008 FFF in Joliet, IL on Jan. 1. It didn't fight too hard in the sub-50° cold waters, but it was still a challenge to my partially frozen fingers and stiff carp gear. Thanks to bailybird (Cory B.) for taking the pic.--Frank

BAILYBIRD'S 19 POUNDER

Cory B. caught this very nice, paunchy 19 pounder mid-morning at the FFF in Joliet. Way to go, bailybird!--Frank
