It all started last year, before the 2007 FFF, when I had this bright idea to compete in the FFF at a local "trout stream" that has a good population of small but "pretty" mirror carp. It was to be myself and 2 of my boys, Willy (age 11 now) and Joey (age 15 now) vs. the "fishguys", Louis and Matt. ....however, a heavy rain event ruined our plans and we each only caught a fish or two......Willy, however ended up catching an 18+ pound koi (at a different location) and was rewarded by making the back cover of the NACA and getting a Hall of Fame certificate!!

So this year, Louis and Matt were interested in fishing different locations, so I decided that I would be a "guide" for the day, and help Willy and Joe compete for the "Junior" title. For 2 weeks prior to the 1st, I chummed a different section of the creek whenever I drove near it, wasting approximately 20 cans of sweetcorn (my favorite bait) in the process. I was sure that even if the water was cold, the carp would be feeding!

We arrived at a local pond first in search of another possible koi capture. However, the pond was muddy and the koi were not visible. After spending a little time at the pond, we decided to go after the mirrors in the local "trout stream".

We arrived there around 10AM (yes, we did sleep in!), and the boys cast their baits in the creek.......instant double header!!!.....looked like my pre-baiting campaign worked!!.....At this particular pool, they each ended up catching 2 mirrors! We decided to move onto the next chummed location, and proceeded to catch about 6 more fish, including Joeys first ever "ghost carp". After a brief lunch, we tried a different location and Willy caught a "rarity".....a common carp!! This particular creek is probably about 90%+ mirrors, so the common was a surprise.

We continued to "pool-hop" throughout the day and caught fish at every pool, racking up the poundage. Towards darkness, we again went to the spot where Joey caught his ghost carp, and stayed into the darkness.....the fish continued to bite, and Joey caught another ghost carp, this time it was an astonishingly small 9 OUNCES!! We hoped that this fish would compete for the "Baby Phone" award, usually taken by Eich and crew at his famous pond location!

We quit after 7PM to go hame, get dinner and for the boys, get to bed early for their first day back to school after the long holiday break. The boys had done well, landing 21 carp, of which 2 were "ghosts, 2 were commons and 17 were mirrors. All were caught using 4 pound flourocarbon, size 16 hooks and noodle rods. The biggest carp landed was only 12pounds 12 ounces, but from such a small stream with super gin clear stream conditions and skittish fish, they did OK........Willy racked up over 86 pounds of fish and Joey caught over 82 pounds of fish! Ican't think of a better way to start out the New Year!

Hear are just a few of the fish caight by the boys on New Years Day......
