Guys,

We now have more than 100 guys & gals who registered, which is TERRIFIC. Which implies that I need to hear from each and every of those 100 anglers in the days following the FFF... Even if you blanked (I can't figure that out unless you tell me!)...

First thing first, please read the rules & awards again... People often forget about the baby award (smallest carp), the sunrise award (sunrise pic) or the scubadoc award (biggest mirror). Also note for this year, the special challenges about carp snow sculptures or the carp-on-a-fly.

Also don't forget to bring a thermometer and to make at least one temp measurement per swim (try to cast your thermometer close to where you fish, and measure the water temp at the bottom). I know that it's getting harder to get a mercury thermometer in pharmacies, so plan in advance. Some tackle shops (I know of at least Wackerbaits) sell good ones for a very reasonable price.

Please do take plenty of pictures, not only of the fish you caught, but also your friends, the scenery, etc. Don't forget to take a pencil and some paper to record your numerous catches. And... your camera with spare batteries, of course! Oh, and your scale. And warm clothing. And warm drinks. Etc!

Then please send me ASAP an e-mail at <jmoisand@gmail.com> with all details, participant full names, who caught what, at what time, fish weight, and of course the water temp. For pics, e-mail attachments are fine, or better, links to online albums (Picasa, Shutterfly, Photoworks, Snapfish (!!), whatever), as you wish.

Deadline: Sunday Jan 10th at midnight (PST). Have fun and make sure to prove Phone wrong (again!).

I went down to the river and tried getting a line in seeing as there was only about 20 feet of ice from the shore which wasn't there 2 days ago when i prebaited. I casted out but there was too much floating ice i almost lots my pod. so my results BLANKED.I cant say i didn't give it a good try though. water was 43 degrees thewave.gif

My session started at 8:00AM this morning, in NJ, at the Rahway River. The water temperature was 45 degree Fahrenheit. I have fished 4 hours.
I chose to set up 3 different rigs, for fun experimental purpose.

-Helicopter rig: 2 oz led, short 3-4 inch fluorocarbon hook length, size 6 Pro Logic hook.
Bait: 1 My own 2.chow(trout pellets) with hot sauce
Pick Up: 1 piece of fake buoyant corn (tried to vary the colors during the day)

-Pay Lake Rig: I have learned this method just recently from a guy named:Sir Top Brooks. I haven't used it up until today, so I am not feeling it yet. This man was very kind to show me, and tell me so much info, I was most impressed with him.
very short 3 inch double #17 lbs hook length because of the cold water temperature, and the giant scary single hook.
bait: 1.My own 2.Chow with hot sauce
pick up: whole/half plain corn puff

-Feeder rig(euro stye)4lbs hook length, size 14 colmic hook, small TopMixUSA cage feeder.
bait: 1. My own 2. chow with hot sauce
pick up: 1.fresh bread 2. pieces of corn puffs, that were treated with some fresh hemp oil 3.different flavored sweet corn

Results:
-On the Helicopter rig, nothing all day!
-Pay lake Rig: Constant nibbles on the line, that indicated that small fish was munching on the pick up, but nothing strong enough, for me to set the hook.
-Feeder rig: 8 fish, all white suckers, but not a single carp bite at all.

Pick Up: Bread by far the best, then corn Puff. Sweetcorn, and pop up was useless today. If I have used red wigglers, then I would of just hammered those suckers today.
Bait: I never understand fish meal, and those who swear by that in wild American waters, in a short session without pre feeding. I believe, that it's effectiveness is significant in Pay lakes, just as all over Europe, but in wild water I think there are better baits out there all year around for carp.
I will experiment with it some more sometimes this year, as I think, that fish meal based baits, such as trout pellets(chow) might be one of the best bait for carp, at certain times of the year, but only when when pre fed 1-2 -3 days with it.

I have caught many carps on January 1. at the same spot under similar conditions, in the past few years, but almost every time, when I did catch them, I was using bread or worm as pick up, and liquidized bread with cornmeal as bait.

Tom! Sorry for the misspell. With my 9 month old daughter in my lap, it wasn't an easy job.

The suckers were also extremely active on the PA side today. Had five of them suck in the sweet corn. No carp either.

We fished from midnight last night until 3PM today. I'll post up a detailed report when I get home. Thanks to Charlie Whitten (Spoon), my partner for this trip, we succeeded beyond our wildest expectations.

Water temp was 42 degrees. Air temp was 43 and deteriorated to 34 (before windchill) by 3 PM. We experienced a constant wind (10-15 mph with gusts to 30) of bitter cold. It was absolutely ridiculous.

Here are the general details.

00:16 15_4 Charlie
01:08 19_12 Zoomie
01:54 9_13 Charlie
02:04 14_4 Zoomie
03:38 13_6 Zoomie
03:55 11_8 Zoomie
04:37 15_12 Charlie
06:12 15_11 Zoomie
08:05 13_0 Charlie
08:18 8_3 Zoomie
08:57 15_15 Zoomie
09:23 6_13 Charlie
10:25 10_6 Charlie
13:15 21_8 Zoomie

In addition, 6 buffalos, 1 catfish and a fish to be named later ware caught. It's part of my story and one of the most bizarre things to ever happen to me while fishing.
