Vinny and myself hosted a small fish-in today where the main goal was to introduce a fairly new CAG member to the mighty Merrimack River today...

Once Gav found his way to Lowell, he got set up and ten minutes later, he was on his first fish... Er... He was using a really tiny rod for the brutes roaming in this river... So he ended up losing this one...

Not discouraged, after swapping a few jokes with Scott, Bob and Vinny, Gav was back to work, and this time landed this beauty. We didn't weigh it, but it was probably around 13/14 pounds. And a good fighter.

As to Vinny and myself? Well, we seem to get into the bad habbit of struggling a bit ourselves when we get somebody new to this spot...

So we decided to change our location, went to another Merrimack spot with Gav. Got set up and 5 minutes later, Gav was on a (smaller) fish. Impressive. Then lost another one (hook bended, might have been a big one).

Action slowed down, but I finally saved my day by landing two "teens" in a row, including this quite full mother-carp (16lb) which almost threw my rod to the water with a violent run. Vinny saved my rod grabbing it at the last second... Thanks, Vinny!

Overall, quite a good day. I know a new CAG member who will come back often to the Merrimack... <_<

Gav just started fishing for carp in the US... He's now fully convinced that he needs to go back to his homeland (Scotland) to bring back more decent carp fishing gear! wink.gif Why is it that these UK guys never think to take their carping gear with them when they move to the US? rolleyes.gif

Congratulations Gav on your first MA carp and for kicking Jerome's ass at the Tsongas! Jerome says you live in Beverly. Where are you working? I'll be back in Salem late June so we should get together for a trip then. I'm planning to attend the Wakefield trip to see if I can catch a 50+.....snapper!

Jerome. The reason we Brits don't bring our carp gear to the US is because there aren't any carp in America.......except in the St Lawrence because all the rest have been caught by bowfishermen biggrin.gif. Fortunately, Tracy persuaded me to bring my rods to MA, just in case there were some carp around.

I know the above sounds laughable, but when I talk to people on my UK lakes about carp fishing in the US they usually ask first if I've fished the Larry and then if it's true that folks "over there" really shoot spawning fish with bows and arrows?

At least it gives me an opportunity to refer them to this forum for reeducation and also to point out that you can have 20 fish days Stateside without trekking almost to Canada.

Iain.

Had a great day guys, thanks a lot.
One thing went through my mind after the first freight train 'oh' i mean fish!!!(i lost)tried to take my arm and fingers of when i tried to stop it hitting the faster water.
You know guys, in the film 'jaws' when chief brody is walking round the boat and 'jaws' swims past him???####ting himself he informs the crew,"were going to need a bigger boat".
I was thinking F**k me!!! im going to need a BIGGER ROD(was using a 6'6" bass road) HAHA!!!!
Soon after Jerome kindly gave me a lend of his much stronger rod.
Had a great day and it was good to meet Scott, Vinny and Bob. Enjoyed the laughs as well particularly Scotts story of his mate with the 2" snapper HAHA!!!

And, Iain if you want to meet up end of june that sounds good to me, will look forward to it.
Should have my gear over from the uk by then so thery'll be no more 'cheif Brody' incidents.

Gav.
