those mako's are incredible fish, most sharks are kind of slow, but those things can out run a tuna over short distances, pretty sure they are one of the fastest moving fish in the ocean on short bursts. Too bad it got knocked on the head 1000+ is a pretty rare fish. Had one follow a tuna I was bringing in once out in the pacific, just a little guy about 4ft long, but just a beautiful looking fish fish.gif

I doubt its a Mako, especially from Nova Scotia.

Its a Porbeagle.

Porbeagles are in the same family as makos and white sharks (mackerel sharks).

Too bad they killed it, especially since that shark is older than the angler, and a massive mature female.

Hopefully those nasty dock pictures help that loser prove his so called manhood once and for all... But if it doesnt Im sure he'll go out again and kill another.

I wouldn't mind anglers keeping sharks if they weren't critically overfished, and had a faster mode of reproduction.

I was a little surprised to find that there was such a tourney when my sis sent me those pics because I'd heard a bit about sharks being overfished on the east coast and I'd seen the doc. from Australia about how great whites are being caught and tagged as protected species (looked like great sport, too!), but I'd no idea what brand of shark this was...looks a bit like the cartoon fish that chases Yosemite Sam. All I can say is horses for courses. I knew a guy from Newfoundland that carried a picture of a dead shark in his wallet. His brother had caught it in his net while fishing the Grand Banks and he couldn't pull the net in. When a boat with a bigger winch came by, they hauled it and he had a great white that was bigger than the one in Jaws (however many feet that was[25?] he had it beat) drowned in his net. Truth is still stranger than fiction! wink.gif
