I would never have thought that carp fishing in November/December was so productive...

So here I was again at the same spot this morning around 10:30. Surprise, Dom Mariano arrived a few minutes later, although we didn't sync up at all...

We started to fish together, and it didn't take long for us to land a few winter carp. Weather was great, very foggy, but nice temperature and no wind this week!

We started a friendly competition, I caught 3, Dom caught 5, I evened the score, we were tied at 5:5, I missed the 6th one, he landed his 6th one... 15 minutes before Dom had to go, he was leading 7:6... I caught another one and thought we were tied for good. But no, he got a run one minute after I landed mine, darn! So I quickly recast, and... tied the score at 8 carp each at the very last minute!

We actually caught pretty nice ones for the local average, quite a few 10+, and one 15lb each. I have to admit that Dom's 15lb was slightly bigger and overall, his total weight was undoubtedly higher, so... ok, he won... this time... It was really fun. smile.gif

Here is his 15 pounder, isn't that amazing how big you can make them look with a good pic? rolleyes.gif

Now, this additional rod you see on the background of the previous pic was a shot in the dark and didn't move for hours. I missed one on it, then finally landed this carp, with a weird scaling on one side, and perfectly regular scaling on the other side.

Dom left around 2PM, while I was landing yet another fish... I tried to make him believe this was a mirror, but nah, it was not...

After 30 minutes of sudden inactivity, my rods started to scream again. Actually... the three of them... And one was quite distant from the others... I had to ask some passerbys to play one fish while I was landing the others... Then I decided "ok, back to the two rods"... Well, I didn't get the two of them in the water for long...

I fished until 4:30 and landed a mind-boggling total of 26 carp during the day. Yep, 26. 24 commons and two crucians (I think!). I never had such a session, never. This was really amazing, and I was so tired at the end... Why, oh why, did I stop fishing in November in the past couple of years? blink.gif

I actually finished my session with a hefty crucian, which also displayed a weird scaling on one side, and normal scaling on the other.

Post-scriptum: we'll definitely have a mini fish-in at this spot for the FFF.

Seems that the Kendall discharge is not longer allowed to discharge anything, so it's a non-starter to go there like we did last year.

Scott also knows a possible spot in his suburbs for those of you more remote. We'll send directions by e-mail in a week or two.

Nice going, Jerome.... are you sure they are "crucians." far more likely to be hybrid goldfish... cool.gif

That's awesome you guys. Here I've sleeping Saturday mornings thinking the carp fishing was over and dreaming about ice fishing. Next week better haul my butt out of bed.

Check the dorsal fin which is convex on the Crucian where as on the Goldfish, tends to be more concave

Phil,
The 8lb 4ozer I got there in 1997 (bigger around than long) was scale tested as pure crucian from a taxologist from MIT as pure crucian. While Im not 100% sure on this, but I think most of the carrassius' there are crucian/hybrids...
Either way, fantastic fishing Domm and Jerome! Im wondering if Sunday might find me there....as the drive up north went very well..

Phil, you're right, I'm not 100% sure they are crucians, but the few I caught out there definitely had a distinct shape (in addition of having no barbels), they were not commons. Also note the quite round swimming fin and the mouth.

I guess the hybrid hypothesis could make sense... What do I know about crucians and hybrids? Admittedly very little... blink.gif

Here is another pic of the other side of this crucian/hybrid/whatever. Note that the scale pattern is fully regular... I have to say I don't remember the shape of his dorsal fin. I'll pay more attention next time.

The photos show that it is a small common carp and not a crucian carp.
