Had a very productive outing yet again at the Charles this afternoon, Vinny and I showed up and Bob G was already fishing. He had already landed 2 including a mirror (first this year for Bob). Vinny got things going with a run of 6-10lber, I managed just a few til the fish got turned onto the bread. It was another hectic session, Bob managed several others including a low teen crucian hybrid (old fish, lots of common), Vinny had 18 fish to low teens, and I ended with 19, a few low teens, a 16, and a monsterous (for the Charles) 24lber! Quite shocking seeing that fish come up right after seeing singles and tiny doubles all day! What a fight on 6lb line..smile.gif
Im glad Jerome was there to witness and photo it, and he too managed a fish. Problem was he was really not looking too good (coming down with a stomach bug..sad.gif Hope you're feeling better Jerome!
Thank you Domm for the heavy pre-baiting...really paid off! Howd ya do yesterday?
Good day...93 and counting! cool.gif

Well, let's put it this way... The stomach bug is out of my stomach... At least most of it... unsure.gif

Yes, it was great to be there and witness this beautiful catch. To put it in perspective, I fished this spot on a regular basis for the past 2 years and a half and the biggest I caught is an 18 pounder... And Scott comes, and here is the 24lber... Mind boggling... wacko.gif

The other side, really an exceptional fish notably for a spot where single-digit carp are the great majority.

Given Jerome's condition, I hesitate to ask what was used for chum...

I left the spot soon enough to not "chum" as you elegantly defined it, Eric... But it was close... sad.gif

On a more positive note, I measured the water temp to 40F... rolleyes.gif

Somehow, this thread makes me think...

Where our "wooden paddle"? Bob, do you still have it?

Since I caught one fish today before giving up, it isn't for me, and Bob's FFF score certainly calls for him to have it... Just would like to perpetuate the tradition during future fish-ins... And one day, one day, have the intense and perverse pleasure to give it to Scott... tongue.gif

Jerome, seems you are feeling a little better (wishing the paddle on me?LOL).
Gotta remember Jerome, Ive been fishing that spot since spring of 1996, and Ive had all of maybe 5-6 20+lb fish from there! It seems the average fish has dropped a bit in the Basin the last 3-4 years, and ones best shot at a 20+ would be to stalk them shallow. Average now seems about 7-8lbs, whereas 1996 my average carp from the basin was just over 9lbs....
Fun day! cool.gif

Thanks guys!
Have family time today, scheduled for pickup at noon (managed to up it from 10am...). SO, woke up early and headed back to the same locale, in windy, 19f weather! Got there around 6:40, and just got home. Weather not good for freelining, cold hands dont feel subtle bites well, and wind makes it hard to hold bottom with just bread. Im just glad there are SO many carp here...
15 carp landed, nearly as many lost. One nice 8lb mirror, and 2 best commons 16 and 17+. The driving force getting me out of bed so early was to get 100 carp in january...the cold is coming and fishing might be unpredictable. Am happy now at 108...
Domm, I baited the crap out of it before I left, and the fish were still biting well. Id definately give it a go before the freeze....
Im wondering if 2000 carp in a year might be doable... happy.gif

Well done - AGAIN! boys.
The success of the Mass anglers just drives the point home that carp CAN be caught year round in cold temps once the fish have been located. A truly impressive showing for January mid winter fishing...

Mike,
Its been quite an eye-opening last 16 days! My goal was to get back into carping like I used to be, but what Ive learned this month so far really is cool. Ive always fished for carp throughout the winter, but usually in opportunistic places and weather patterns. Ive said, once their wintering area is found, youd find LOADS of fish in small areas, and some will always feed (no matter what Phone says). But, between ice-fishing and other stuff, never really fished hard in cold winter. Late winter (ie late feb-march) I have, but not january... My best January before this one was 23 fish!
Some of my winter carping beliefs were thrown out the window. Always learning. This swim on the Charles is one I would not have guessed to be prime wintering locale....but, it may just be one every year. Meaning catches like this every year!
One of the main places I fish during the winter, "Barry", is nothing more than a small creek entering the Concord r. Fishing it during stable and/or warming trends can produce some decent results.....but during real cold snaps is a blank factory....but the Charles...wow!
36-40f water, and 62 fish in 4 seperate 2-3 hour sessions. Amazing, and really appreciated! I hope the rest of the year cooperates, itd be nice to get 2,000 carp in a year. Tried HARD in 1997 and ended with 1,976 carp, fishing over 200 sessions (many short ones). But, didnt have close to the same knowledge I have now...something to shoot for.
Ill be searching for more wintering areas locally this winter!
