Vinny and I met Fran, Mike Dragone, and (finally) I got to meet Gaeton. Big open area in the section that we normally fish, but enough ice on either side of the opening to allow some ice fishing.
Vinny, Fran, and I fished the opening, and instantly we were on carp. Nothing happening out on the ice, so Mike got one of his rods from his car. They too caught. BUT, I happened to glance over and see Mikes jiggin rod off the tripod, Mike went over with Gate, and Gate managed to land his first ever ice carp of about 7lbs! Congrats Gaeton!
Mike also managed a 5-6lber, but most of the action was in the opening. Lots of action. Loads of it. I managed 26 carp into the lower teens, including a beautiful low double ghostie (bright colors). Vinny managed 18 to about 16+lbs, he also got a very brilliant 10lb ghostie! Fran, Mike and Gate caught quite a few to the 16-17lb range. Great day.....
Except for the 12' high truck that tried to fit under a 10' high bridge at 30mph.... blink.gif BIG BANG, we looked over to see this truck (about a 24' shortbed) laying on top of a silver Toyota. Mike and I ran over to help, both people (thank god) were OK, but the lady in the car missed being crushed by a mere couple feet, as the truck lay on the front of her car. I had to climb up on the truck cab and pull the uninjured (at least physically) truck driver out of the side turned cab....interesting scene...guess you never know what youll see while hauling on the Charles! Guess the "Cars Only" yellow sign at the Sturrow dr entrances werent big enough to read for some... <_<
Noone injured, lots of carp, good company, and a couple first time ice carpers! Good day.
Pics Im sure to follow....

It was a great day to fish on the Charles River. I really need to thank Chris for his help. I had doubles on as he drove by in his truck. He jump the curb and parked on the center median. He then crossed 2 lanes of high speed traffic to help me. Chris went over the bridge safety wall and hung over Ice water to help me net my fish. Next it was my turn to do the hang of death for him! The crowds thought we were crazy but the nice fish were well worth it. Here is our catch report.

Chris: 19.2 LBS common, 15lbs common, 10 lbs common, ( Had two more fish fish but I dont know the weights)

AF Bob: 19 LBS common, 18.8 LBS mirror, 16 LBS common, 8 LBS common,
6lbs common

18.8 LBS carp is my new mirror PB

Bob,
Looks like we cleared out all the little ones out for you guys.
Great job & congrats on the mirror. Scotty had a pretty decent fish on that preferred being under the ice I think. Hook pulled before we got a look at it.

Well, I was a bit miffed to see that almost everybody is catching a fully-scaled out there except me... And that almost everybody is catching bigger carp than I ever did in MANY sessions at this spot (18lb was my biggest).

So I went fishing this afternoon, having set my mind on catching a 20+ fully scaled... rolleyes.gif

Here is a pic of the swim, with the ice retreating after a week of mild weather. Can't believe you guys ice-fished so close to open water! blink.gif

I fished 4 hours from the bridge, with a lot of action. I ended landing 10 carp (all on bolt rigs) and missing a few more. All of them caught on Pescaviva Caramel.

But I didn't catch a mirror... And... I was convinced I had caught a 20+, but alas the scale was very stubborn in claiming this fish was only 19lb... I still have doubts about it, but what can I say, it's a scale and I'm only a human being and you guys will take the word of the scale against me... blink.gif I also caught an 18lb and a few more teens. Yeah, it was an "ok" session... rolleyes.gif cool.gif

Well, this isn't my PB from the Charles (got a 23lb from the WWD in Nov-2003), but yes, my new PB from this spot. Yes, they do seem to get bigger, remember, I had a hard time catching a 10+ back in November out there! Sounds to me that they are congregating more and more in this spot, including the big ones.

Actually I was planning to fish with bread, but my usual technique was working quite well, so I ended up not doing it... When catching slowed down, I was too lazy to change my rig... Will do next time... rolleyes.gif
