A few days ago on Sunday I went to a lake to try fishing it for carp. I've been there before but I've never tried to catch carp
there or even seen any.
|
 |
I heard from a few people that they have seen or heard of big carp in there so I thought I would give it a try. The lake is the deepest in the area and I thought that this was be one of the best times since the fish are usually shallower this time of the year.
It rained the whole weekend but I still wanted to go since I don't get as many oppurtunities to fish as I'd like. I also thought that since it was raining there would be less people on the lake (there are usually a lot of people that fish from boats for fish like walleye).
The night before I made a small batch of scopex/robin red boilies with Energy Plus base mix from the boilie shop. I made the sausages but for some reason they weren't rolling into balls well so I just took the sausages, put them on a plate and stuck them in the freezer for a while. Once they were fairly hard I cut them into peices so they are shaped like a barrel. They have an 18mm diameter but they are larger than regular circle shaped 18mm boilies. I didn't have enough time to let them dry for 24 hours but I found that the outside was still pretty tough so they would be ok for use.
My dad took a nap in the carp while I fished. I had one rod with one of the boilies mentioned above and one with scopex maize popped up with fake corn.
I was chumming with a small amount of maize and sweetcorn with my stubby spod, that is until my stubby spod somehow broke off on the cast and went sailing into the middle of the lake!!! I watched in sadness as the little orange top went floating down the lake and out of sight.
I casted out the boilie but when I reeled it in again I found out that the bottom of the lake was covered in this underwater grass type of stuff so I cut the boilie in half, put a foam disc between the halves and put a split shot below the hook to pop it up about an inch and have the boilie sit right above the weedy stuff.
I got a run on the boilie and was into a fish. I had casted pretty far since I saw a carp jump way out. The carp swam torwards me and I reeled to keep the line tight. It a minute or two it was at the bank. I forgot that this wasn't a river like I'm used to and it gets very shallow near the shoreline. The fish was then in really shallow water and it was still full of energy since it swam torwards me at first. I saw that it was a mirror carp and I got very excited. It would be my first carp from this lake and my first mirror! Right about then the fish popped off the hook right under the rod tip.
Soon after that an old guy in his boat drove right in front of me. He had seen me before and even though I was fishing kind of close to the boat launch he had to drive right next to the shore line and directly in front of me!! He then came back around in front of me again and then his boat motor died!!! He was right there for several minutes trying to start his motor and probably scaring away all the fish I thought. I was considering giving him a face full of maize but then decided against it. He finally got his boat started and then drove right back to the boat launch and left!
I thought there was probably a small chance that the fish were still in the area but then again many boats are usually driven on this lake and I was fishing far out so maybe it wouldn't have and effect.
A while later I so the reel turn really slightly and I knew another fish was checking out the boilie so I stood right over the reel with my hands ready. As soon as the fish started running I grabbed the rod and tried to get the fish. The fish wasn't there though so I thought that I must have pulled the hook out of the carp's mouth because I didn't let it run enough and not letting the bolt and hair rig do what they were designed to do.
I casted out a fresh boilie. Also popped up about and inch and a while later I got another good run. This fish was on good and I started to fight it. I new it was a big one so I set the drag a little lighter. I battled it for about 15 minutes when my dad woke up to see how I was doing and he saw me fighting the fish. He took a picture of me fighting the fish. I loosened the drag when the fish got close since I didn't have a net to net the fish with.
After almost 30 minutes I got the fish. The only net I had was really small since I lost my other one in a lake. I finally got it tired out and then I handed the rod to my dad, went out and scooped up the fish with my hands and put it into a large sac to weigh it. It was 23 pounds. A new pb for me and myfirst carp over 20 pounds.
I'm also glad that I found a water with bigger fish in it. I've spent many hours fishing my usual spots with no fish over 15 pounds and then I come to this lake and have a carp over 20 pounds in less than 4 hours. I'm also glad I finally found a water were the fish seem to respond to boilies well.

Well, how is that? Somebody quite special to me caught his first carp TODAY. Mark the date: February 7th, 2004.
Nope, not my wife, but my 2nd son, Alexis. Who's been patient enough to stay outside, in a rather chilly wind, fishing the Charles.
Actually, I fished alone for a while while my family was taking a walk. I caught a couple of small ones, then had a rather strong take.
I thought I was playing a nice teen... Turned out it was an especially strong carp of... well, 7.5lb... Anyway, my wife and kids came
back just when I was netting it. And to my complete surprise, Alexis agreed to stay with me fishing while the others went for another
walk. We had to wait quite a while, but finally, this delicious buzzer sound came to shake us from frozen thoughts... Alexis was the
first on the rod, and played the fish with a bit of fatherly guidance. It was again a quite strong fish which kept us busy for a couple
of minutes. And miracle, we landed it... So here is the very nice golden 6.9 pounder and the proud angler. Actually, I guess the
proudest individual was the guy who took the picture..:o)

Last night I made some ground bait out of instant oatmeal and chocolate/corn syrup. I tried it today after the oats had absorbed the chocolate and corn syrup. I found out it is a bad pack bait because it doesn't break so I put it on a method feeder and put 4 pieces of scopex pescavia on the hair with a very short leader. I casted out and launched out some balls of it while I was waiting. I soon had a run but it wasn't hook that well and I soon lost it. I re-baited and casted out again. After a little while I had another run and hooked it good. I landed it and weighed it and it was a nice 7 pounder. I ran out of the chocolate oats after that because I didn't make much since I was mainly testing it but I did bring some ground bait that I had make earlier. I put some of that on the feeder and casted out again. I had another run and caught a tiny 4 pounder. Still fun though. I didn't bother to take a picture of the 4 pounder.
I casted out again and had a run. It felt like a pretty good size one, maybe 10 pounds but it soon came off. I then reeled in and rebaited and casted out again. About 10 minutes after I had a big run and set the hook. I felt much bigger than the last two. After about 2 or 3 minutes I got him close to shore. I then netted him with one hand and held the rod with the other. I weighed him and he was 11 pounds. I had him in the net and he jumped out so I dove into the freezing water and scooped him up with the net! aI didn't even think about it I just jumped in because I had not yet had a picture with him. Don't worry, I didn't injure the fish. I then took a picture and released it and then went home and took a warm shower because I was FREEZING!
I now know for sure that I like the method and will use it more often from now on. It was about 40 F outside and the water was much colder and I've heard that the fishing is really slow in colder water. I had a total of 5 runs and I landed 3 of them. If this is slow I wonder how I'll do next spring and summer!

Ok, my share of kids pictures now...
First, dad and kids... and a nifty bass (4 pounds, if I remember well)... Was in 2002
And my elder, Valentin, the year he favored me with some dad/son carp fishing...
Was in 2002 as well...
Couldn't make him go fishing in 2003... Waiting for a change of mind in 2004, maybe...
Finally, a special thought for a special kid, who fished a bit with me when his parents were living in the US, but before I learned how to fish for carp... He was really into it, displaying incredible patience for a kid his age.
He then came back to Belgium (where he's from), got quite a lot of health problems, heard a lot of my fishing stories, and finally had an opportunity to catch a local mirror carp (actually four of them in one session!) after a couple of years. I believe this was one of his happiest days...
Here he is, with dad, who knows everything about planes, but doesn't know much about fishing!

Here's a not so clear pic of my son Tj - was 6 years old at the time . He loves to catch Carp as much as playing video games. Here's his PB of 19# caught on his own with a little coaching from dad. I can't wait for him to break this PB. He still gets excited catching all the fish that are willing to participate. My daughter doesn't like to fish very much any more. Yuk! she says.
