  1. The Lake Somerset Fish In is over.

While the fishing was not the greatest, we were treated to some great music (but terrible musicianship)and fireworks. Not many Fish Ins can boast that!!

I'll try to recap to the best of my "post spider bite" recollection............

    The event "officially" ran for 12 hours on Saturday - 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

I arrived @ 5:30 a.m. to find several anglers already on the bank. They had been there since late Friday afternoon and they managed to land a few fish - including a nice fully scaled mirror by Al "carper n'@" Anderson. One angler, Corey "Mountain Man" Bisick somehow managed to catch an "expired" snapping turtle. Looking to be a few days old, this little guy was NOT very pleasing to the nose!

The bad news however, was that despite the numerous fish rising and crashing in the area, this normally "catch friendly" venue was not putting many carp on the bank.

The next 12+ hours, would unfortunately remain the same.

Local anglers Dwayne Brown and Dale Lung managed to land the most carp during the event - with Dale catching the #2 heavy at 10.5 lbs and Dwayne coming in at #3 with a 9.

Big fish fell victim to Dave King's rod and reel - tipping the scales at a robust 16lb 3 oz. (wish I had a picture Dave!)

For their efforts, Dave, Dale and Dwayne were awarded some fishing tackle - donated by the generous folks at Resistance Tackle.

Resistance was also kind enough to provide some additional tackle to be awarded as door prizes to the attendees.

If my records are accurate, there were only 8 or 9 carp caught between 7 & 7 - and weighed no more than 10.5 lbs - with the exception of the 16+ caught by Dave King.

A few catfish managed to make it to shore as well.

    Anglers in attendance were........

    Bill Devine "KingKool"

    Al Anderson "carpern@"

    Tim Petrak "Tim412"

    Jeremy Fardoe

    Steve Lojek "pacarper"

    Dale Lung

    Dwayne Brown

    Cory Bisick "Mountain Man"

    Brian Wingard "accordbw"

    Ryan Simpson

    Bill Tracy

    Dave King

    and

    Dave K. "The Hogg"

A few local guys also showed up later in the day - but I did not record their names.

A few anglers showed up "after hours" on Saturday (probably to listen to the concert and to enjoy the fireworks).

Among these were Jimmy Morgan and family along with the venerable Ray "Herkel" Corcoran and a handful of other western PA paylakers.

These guys fished through the night, while I left for the friendly comforts and confines of Pioneer Park to lick my wounds.

Early Sunday morning, I awoke to heavy rain (so decided NOT to fish again) - but I did return to the lake to see who stuck around after the fireworks had ended.

Tim, Steve and Brian were the only carpers left on the bank.

They reported a few carp captures over night. It was also mentioned that a flathead cat was landed as well.

Sticking around to BS for a few hours on Sunday - I got to witness Brian "accordbw" Wingard land a nice fully scaled mirror! (where was my camera??? In the truck!) Oh well.

As I type this report, the carp are probably still crashing at Lake Somerset...............

A big thanks to Brian Wingard, Ryan Simpson, Joe Gorden and Resistance Tackle for setting up the event and providing tackle awards and samples.

  2. For those attending this event, we are asking that you complete a "scorecard" for all fish caught during the established hours (7:00A.M. - 7:00P.M.)

A copy of the "scorecard' is attached - you can print your own or use one that I supply on the day of the event. (I'll have pens as well)

    I'll be at the lake early (@ 5:00 A.M.) - {I'll be the good looking guy standing lakeside......................}

After the event - please hand me your "scorecard".

Completed "scorecards" will be used to report Fish In results on this Forum.

Don't want your name/photo/likeness published? simply DO NOT complete a "scorecard"

(I am no expert with Excel)

    See you at the lake......................

  4.

I find that once the turtles move in on your bait it's usually best to move to a different location if traveling light. Also if a lake is Over populated with turtles it might be best to fish at night if they are becoming a problem

, Turtles don't feed at night from my experience .

Not too sure sliders make good soup anyway................. :D

  5. The carp (and other fish - re: great spot for walleye right now) have been coming to the spillway long before people fed them.

It started out as a function of people feed the fish because they are there, not that the fish are there because the people feed them.

Are more fish (and fowl) sticking around becasue of the feeding? Absolutely - especially true of the fish above the spillway, living in the propagation area.

I also object the comment earlier about the fish being "unhealty" there - sure some look bad, but when you have that many fish to look at, you're gonna find some ugly ones.

Pymatuning is absolutely loaded with carp - even miles away from the spillway. While the spillway is jam packed with carp - I would argue that they only represent a small fraction of the total population of the entire lake.

FYI - some real monsters swimming in the "propagation" zone - tough to find one more than 10-15 lbs out in the main lake.

Years ago, at least one CAG fish in was held on the Ohio side of the lake. Large number of fish caught, but I think the biggest was around 10 lbs or so (caught by yours truly - KK himself). Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong...........
