  1. All right, my first chance to get somebody else to fish crickets!

CMJ - go to the local pet shop and buy some feeder crickets. Super Glue one to your hook (which is on light line!) - Attach a controller or a bobber @ 2.5 - 3 foot above the hook and cast with all you've got right out to where the carp are feeding off the top and BAM! - you should catch 'em.

I've done a bit of this the last two summers with some success, although nothing too large (up to @ 6 lbs maybe?) has taken the bait.

It's fun, but a lot of work - you do a lot of casting and your fingers get all glued up (be careful not to get them stuck)

If you try this , post your results - I'd be anxious to see if you fare better than I have.

  2. I know this is a weird question but if anyone from western PA reads this and fishes lake arthur could you PM me and help me out w/ some spots where carp could be? That'd be great.

TC - tried to PM you twice but I don't think it worked -

Try to PM me - I plan on hitting Lake Arthur soon...........

  3. Brian hit it on the head, this is NOT a slight towards what Neil & Jackie have done with the ATC over the last 3 years (which were some of my best fishing memories). What it is, IMO, is recognition that we will need several folks, if not many, to keep the ATC "The Crown Jewel Of CAG Events".

Neil & Jackie have done what 2 people just can't do, so we'll need at least 6-7. I am not sure how I can help, especially since this was my last ATC for at least a couple years (new places to see, and the lake owes me nothing), but if I can be part of the help, just tell me.

I know we will absolutely need guys like Frank, Keith, and many other Texas guys to help work out the logistics of L Austin in Non-Emma Long areas. What Frank just posted is a good start, but they'd need to be more conference to work it out with good info from the TX crew about where to have 20 pegs on Austin with any kind of feasability. The times may even have to be changed for the L Austin teams to accomidate travel, OR, potentially a new hotel/gathering locale close to the L Austin Dam, intermediate between both places.

There's a lot to discuss, but we will need many folks to pull off what Jackie and Neil have done.

I would agree with what B. Carphuna says here - although I've never been to the ATC, nor have I ever organized a fishing tournament - I have been involved in the running of several amateur wrestling tournaments.

What do the two have in common? - the need for VOLUNTEERS.

Quality volunteer assistance is key to the success of any event of this type. Fishing or otherwise.

  4. i have caught some fish that were fat and bloated that were under 15 lbs. and most were from a stream, not a lake. maybe a lot of the fish you see in mags are fed a lot, but there shape is just genetics, and there are plenty of fish around here like that, that were not part of some crazy breeding program.... well not recently anyway...

these are from 3 different places. i have seen and caught lots like them:

    louis-gifford-bowler.jpg

if these grew to be 40+ lbs, would they do it for you? :D

These look nothing like the fat bloaters that I have seen pictures of.

I understand the "genetics" thing concerning shape - but when you see a fish that is ALL BELLY - you know it's bloated from loading up on freebies.

You all know which ones I mean. (and I do not mean all fish that have a more "round" than "torpedo" phenotype.)

I suppose any fish, even a "wild" one, could be gorged enough to become fat and bloated - but who wants to catch one of these? (OK - I guess everybody on here does) - I'd rather catch fish that weren't so "artificially" built up.

  5. We need more members. period. you say the forum is great so why not support the club by joining. I'm not sure I get it. Not trying to attack you just not sure about the whole thing.

You see my point exactly then. The forum is free. It is the only thing I find useful from CAG.

Again, I am not all that much into "multiple, consecutive day fishing trips " - 12 hrs is about my limit, and I usually don't prefer to go much over 8. Therefore, some of the CAG only tournaments do not appeal to me.

I suppose, I could join and attend a few w/o fishing 24/7, but then my chances of winning would be gretly reduced.

I do like the competitive nature of tournaments, and I have attended several "non CAG" events in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Any of these "multiple day" events that I have been to - I DO NOT fish constantly straight through - I am done after 10 - 12 hrs, and I find it valuable to seek out a chilly beer to end the day and always find it more relaxing to spend the night in a bed, as opposed to a bed chair.

I have also fished several CAG fish ins during my career, but again - after 10 - 12 hrs or so, I am done. Being mostly for fun, there is no down side to putting in considerably less fishing hours at a CAG fish in.

Again, 24/7 for two or three days is not my bag.

As a former CAG member (signed on years ago as #201) - the club received $ support from me long before most current active members proabably ever heard of CAG. After supporting the group for many years, I decided that I had received all of the benefits that I needed from the club, and I was no longer interested in being a member.

I have reached a limit on the amount of gear/baiting tactics that I am willing to use - so again, $$ discounts on carp gear does not interest me. Will this limit my chances of landing 30+, and 40+ lb carp? It sure will. But, catching a behemoth is not always necessarily my goal when fishing. I would love to land fish that big, I'm just not willing to put in the time and effort necessary to increase my chances dramatically enough to make it possible. Find a spot where these fish live, put in the time to bait, fish, use better strategies, etc for a long enough period of time and anybody can catch fish that big.

I am NOT the die hard carper that most other folks on here seem to be. This, I believe, is probably the most significant factor in the limits to the number of people willing to join CAG. There really just is not a high enough number of folks in the U.S. that interested in serious carp fishing. If there were, then there would be several clubs and organizations just like CAG.

Cag has done a great job of promoting the sport and educating folks about carp, but the interest that some folks think is there - just doesn't exist.

As far as paying dues just to be on the Forum - that would certainly hurt CAG, as it would limit the effectiveness of CAG's ability to recruit new members and to extol the virtues of their stated goals.

If the forum were to be closed to non members, I am sure that other forums would be created to take it's place. I know that there are other forums currently out there that I could join (also for free) - but I happen to think that this is the best one available, and I enjoy reading and posting messages on this forum.

    how's that?

  6. Went several days ago to "The Usual", and witnessed Vinny top the 400+ carp season for the first time for him.

Here's his 400th of the year, a low double.

Is it safe to be puffing on a square while holding a fish?

Can't contact with a hot ash do a lot of damage to a carp?

Hopefully this animal wasn't burned during this photo shoot.

  7. I don't see the value for me.

I generally don't buy a ton of stuff (bait, equipment, etc....) so saving a few bucks here and there with a CAG discount is not that big of a deal for me. I'm not really hurting for $$, so I suppose I am lucky in that regard.

CAG only events - I am not as "hard core" as most people on this forum or in CAG, so I am not always willing to spend an entire week fishing. Even when I was a member, I didn't participate in any of these (although the CCC was the only one at the time). Generally speaking, a fishing trip that takes me out of state for several days of constant fishing isn't my cup of tea. Nothing wrong with folks doing this, it just isn't for me, and I suspect most non CAG'ers feel the same or else they just don't have the time/$$ to do it.

CAG Fishins are free - as they sould be in order to promote carp fishing, ethics, etc.... so many nearby, daily events can be attended.

Most of the "Euro" or "high end" carp info, techniques, stories, photo's etc.....can be gleaned right from this forum - no membership needed.

The forum is great, but if it was CAG members only - it wouldn't get the same use. Unfortunately for CAG, it's like a double edged sword. CAG needs the members, but how many folks are willing to join just to use the forum?

Look at BASS for instance - you can buy bass magazines by the scores (relatively low cost) but you don't need BASS membership to buy them.

What benefits does being a BASS member have? If it's tournament eligibilty, BASS only events, etc.....then I would assume that BASS has similar issues that CAG does with recruiting members. Fortunately for BASS however, folks in the US that fish for bass (on a high end, tons of gear, etc scale) FAR exceeds the number of folks that fish for carp on the same grand scale.

Just my two cents...........have at it.

  8. Having had one of my all time worst (lowest number caught) fishing year's ever - It was good to end the year on a strong note.

I left for Erie, PA the night of Nov 21st - not really intending to do any "real" fishing, but went out on the afternoon of the 22nd since the temps were warm.

Figured I would hit the Fairview Gravel Pit (roughly 10 acre "pond" that receives trout stockings from the state) - maybe would spend an hour or so, before moving on to Presque Isle. Not really figuring to catch anything, but thinking it would be nice to spend some time out in the sun - a rare thing for PA at this time of year.

The only gear I had, was an ultralight trout set up and a few spinners (Rooster Tails). Didn't expect much action as I pulled into the boat launch parking lot. Only saw one other person fishing alongside the raodway.

First cast yielded nothing, but casts 2, 3, & 4 came up productive. Each retrieve saw roughly 5 -8 trout following the lure, with a nice brookie attacking it about 4 ft from shore. Needless to say, I found the Mother Lode!

I continued casting out, just in front of the weedline, hooking a trout on just about every cast. At this point, it almost became too easy, and I began to "select" the fish I was catching. If nothing of any size was chasing the lure, I simply yanked it out of "harm's way" and re cast again.

After @ 4.5 hrs, I had reached a total of 29 landed. It took the last 1/2 hr of a 5 hr trip to nab # 30, but I finally got it.

Ended up keeping 6 (3 that I caught and 3 that my brother caught) of the largest - 3 rainbow, 2 brook and a brown. PA rules only allow you to keep three after Labor Day.

Turns out, the pit was stocked a few days earlier by a private club - apparently a busload of them were shoaled up on the far end of the pit by the launch. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Even though it was almost a "massacre" - it felt good to finally have a decent day fishing after getting beaten and battered all year!

  9. :D not true at all. This guy had an accident, thats all. Many people fish from their Wheelchairs just fine. I help with two fishing derby's here that alot of wheelchair users attend and they have a great time. I have a friend who has come to a fish-in, and caught many fish. He boats, hunts duck, deer, rabbit he even went to Canada bear hunting this year.

dont mean to jump on you there KK but fishing and wheelchairs mix just fine, may need alittle extra thought but no problem. People on their feet fall in all the time. :D

    rod

    Rodman -

I understand that, and I think it's great that folks in wheelchairs get outdoors and participate.

My little addition to this thread was meant as a shot at Jake - it was not supposed to be taken seriously.

Like many threads on this forum, this one included "cheap shots". All in jest of course. :D
