  1. i am not lying

    Jake,

The fish in the photo was NOT caught by YOU.

The blue background was NOT your mom's van.

Sounds like a lie to me.

For the record - I beleive you caught a mirror carp that is the same size as the fish in that picture.

If it's your first mirror - congrats - great catch, etc......

PS can you spot my spelling error?

  2. People have told me that they have caught them on crickets and I have read that the larger specimens are detritus feeders as well as filter feeders.

I have caught commons on crickets!

  3. Try SPAM!

In my experience (mostly on larger rivers) catfish do bite "more gently" than carp, but you'll know when they do.

They don't "usually" run as much as carp either. Most run a few yards then stop.

As far as hook size - use the same size as you would for carp or go larger. Cats that I have caught never seemed to mind a gigantic hook in the middle of their meal.

  4. Which color(s) did you use by chance ?  I always did well with the fluoresent green one. I have no clue how, but this is probably the best artificial lure ever made. USed to catch alot of Smallmouth's  as well as Crappie on these.

It was a small size "crab" - green (not fluorescent) top / with a light orange bottom - almost a natural looking color.

Gotta agree on the "best artificial lure ever" comment too. - I've seen these things catch just about anything - carp included.

  5. I've been experimenting with crickets on the float - need a calm water area - get a nice bed of groundbait ( I use range cubes or rabbit pellets / canned sweetcorn) - once you know they are there feeding - use glue to attach a cricket to a size 6 or smaller hook - long/light leader - fish with a bobber or controller about two to two and a half feet above your hook ( a few freebie crikets - sans wings - helps) - I've been catchng a few this way, but nothing too big yet.

    Still working on this method.

Of course it always helps if you can see carp surfacing.

The fish were already surface feeding in the area I am trying to fish this technique.

It's been a lot of work - but it's been fun.......

  6. Went out bass fishing last night - S. branch of Ten Mile Creek, near Lippincott PA.

Got a late start as I had to drive there (@ 1 hr trip) after getting home from work @ 6:30pm - fished for about an hour----pulled in 7 altogether.

    1 Rock bass

    1 White bass

    5 Smallies

They were crushing the mighty "Rebel Crab" crayfish lure.

Most strikes occurred just as the lure hit the surface. Was a lot of fun on an ultralight set up.

Fish ranged in size from the 7" Rock bass to 11" + on the smallies and White guy.

  7. This past Sunday, I, along with Dave K., and veteran Paylaker Bill C. spent a 12 hr session at an "un named" paylake. I had not been to any paylake in several years and was looking forward to the possibility of winning some cash.

I took along a big batch of millet pack that I found a recipe for here on the forum, while Bill C., brought along plenty of his own brand of paylake baits.

I decided to fish one rod with millet pack, the other with a Bill C. concoction. About one hour into the session, I landed the first fish of the day for our crew. A small (roughly 5 - 6 lber) on the rod with the Bill C. concoction. Not enough to win the hourly cash, but it started things off..........

Shortly thereafter, Dave K. and Bill C. started reeling them in like mad. Both had been using two rods with the Veteran Bill C's bait.

I on the other hand, continued to use the "one & one" method that I had started with. Needless to say, Dave K (with 13 fish landed) and Bill C. (with 14 fish landed) outfished me (with 7 fish landed) pretty good.

Not a bad day's total, when considering we also managed to lose another 10 or 15 before getting them to shore.

Although we caught many, none were "money" fish. We did weigh one in early on in @ the 8th hour, but it didn't last and was not one of the big fish for the day.

In the final hour, Dave K. had a possible winner for the hour (had to beat a 10 something), but the fish spit the hook @ 12 feet from shore and swam off into the depths. We estimated it was a mid to high teens fish - and would have given Dave the $$ for the final hour.

All in all, it was fun day, despite ending up on the "losing" side of the cash.

Although, we decided to say that we didn't lose - we just ran out of time.

Now, I don't consider myself to be a carp hugger and I have no problems with folks who catch and eat carp - and I realize that what I about to say will probably light off a powder keg......but I will say this much about my paylake experience yesterday.....80% of the fish that we caught, were in terrible condition - looked as though they had been through the wringer more than once.

The worst of these had to have been one that I caught late in the day - this little guy had a broken lower jaw/lip - it was just hanging there, I don't even know how this thing was eating. Saw many fish kicked back into the water or dragged up on shore without a net, to only be kicked back in once the contestant saw it's size.

Now I don't frequent these lakes enough to know if this happens a lot, but it would make sense that the lake owners would discourage this type of treatment of their fish. I've caught a lot of "wild" fish from some of the rivers here in Pgh, and they often times look pretty beat up - but nothing like these fish did.

Would this stop me form going back? No, because I like the competitive nature involved here, I just think the lake owners would want to take better care of their "product".

  8. Are there really any "secrets" to carp fishing?

Anything you would need to know you can find right here on the forum - plus, half the fun (my experience anyway) is finding out a lot of the "secrets" on your own.

Don't be afraid to try new ideas and maybe come up with a few of your own.

You may just surprise yourself and invent your own "secret" method/ bait, etc....

  9. Finally off the Schneid!

Caught a few this past weekend at American bridge Fishing Classic.

Ended up placing 2nd overall for carp - 28 inch (maybe 8 lbs)

and 3rd in the "other" category - 20.5 inch buff - (maybe 8 lbs as well)

My pal Paul D. from Mt Lebanon, PA - won third place carp - he reeled in around seven of them over the course of the day.......

Won assorted fishing gear / binoculars........

Hopefully now, I can end this thread!

  10. Bill,    If you can try to get it touch with me before the contest and I'll prefish it with you. It's always nice to have an edge. The big flatheads should be moving up there by then and the bigger buffs start to feed pretty good in AUG.& Sept. There's some good commons in there right now from people feeding the ducks. The biggest fish we caught this year was only 23lb's but I've seen fish crash that were a lot bigger. The flatheads are still running on the small side [under 15lb.] but that should be changing soon as the shad start to move in. Last year we had fish in the 50-60 lb. class that stayed until late Oct. Hope to see Ya soon.  Herkel :D

I'd like to, but I've had to rearrange my schedule so I can be in Tionesta one weekend (12th - 13th) prior to the tournament - just won't have the time.

Seems like I have too much stuff going on every weekend......It ain't easy being me!

  11. Bill,  I can fish anywhere around the marinas but the Park is the place you want to fish. There's a carp&catfish contest down there on the 19th. 2000$ in payouts and only a 50$ buy in. If your interested let me know.    Herkel

May be in Tionesta that weekend, but then again maybe not...

What are the particulars on the contest?

You can PM me or just put them out right on here.........

    I am definately interested.

    Thx!

nevermind - I just saw your other post down in Mid Atlantic region.......

  12. There used to be a place called Zett's somewhere in PA (Clearfield??). Not sure if they are still around - was not able to find their website.

The used to sell Israeli carp - not sure about commons, etc.....

You could always catch some wild ones and transplant them if that's legal in your area.

  13. Bill,  You don't have to go that far. Come on down Ten Mile with me some night you get freed up and I'll put you on some fish :D  We caught 20+ carp, buffs and some cats the other night after the storms passed and the shovel heads are just starting to bite. Last year we got them in the 50-60 lb. class.  Herkel

    Thanks Herk,

I've fished Ten Mile before - never caught any carp much over 7 or 8 lbs.

Never fished it for Flatheads - would like to try sometime.

Just need to find the time.

Is the county park the place to go? I'd like to fish it more close to the Mon, but that seems to be all taken up by the Marina.
