  1. Ahhhh, the "Spillway" - truely a sight to see.

For those that have not yet had the pleasure - you will see more carp here in an hour than you will ever see in a lifetime.

Most are on the small side - 10lbs and under, but up above (where you see the ducks in the water in the phot) there are monsters - easily 30lb +.

Unfortunately - there is no fishing on this side of the causeway - it is a game propagation area.

Across the street however, fishing is allowed. Be warned though, despite the large number of carp - they are not so easy to catch.

Floating bread works best, but the fish know (believe it or not) where the fishing / no fishing line is located. A piece of bread tossed into the "no fishing" zone will disappear in an instant as thousands of fish rush to suck it down.

Toss a piece of bread just outside the line (a cable stretches across the water) and it will most likely go untouched. Probably be picked up by a gull or duck......

Many a snapped fishing line can be seen tangled in the cable. The fish, when hooked out side the "free food" zone will swim directly under the cable in an attempt to free themselves.

Pymatuning is a lake filled to the brim with carp. Unfortuantely, most are not very big.

  2. All right then - the Skunking continues!!!!

5 hrs in a canoe, fishing for carp & smallmouths. Baiting was a snap - reeling in a lump would have been an adventure.

Needless to say - I blanked yet again!

Curt S. managed one smallie, but didn't bother to keep it. turns out it would not have finished in the "money" (AKA Gander Mountain donated prizes) anyway, so no loss there.

Needless to say - the tournament was fun - ended up with a free T Shirt, door prize tackle box and a few lures, and best of all - they gave us a free lunch - BEER INCLUDED!

Not many fish caught during tournament - no carp; no trout; no musky -

smallmouht bass; largemouth bass; pike; and walleye were turned in.

This was a no kill tournament - as you caught a fish, you had to signal a judge (using a flag and whistle) they would then approach your boat/canoe - measure and record fish, and release it back into the lake.

Will try to fish this lake again from the shore - in hopes of finding some carp. Will have a better idea then for next year as to where a good spot to anchor the canoe will be...............

Next tournament coming up July 29th...........

Any predictions on whether I blank or suddenly begin to haul???????

  3. Another weekend, another "skunking" - again Tionesta Creek on a canoe.

The water was very high due to recent rains.

Curt S. was banging the smallmouths near the shoreline grasses - I of course used the same technique, yet I got skunked!

Would like to sell all of my fishing gear and go to the bar!

Another tourney this Saturday - hopefully my luck changes.......

  4. OK - thanks everyone. It's nice (not really) to see that I am not the only one having a "down" year.

I am sure things will improve - I just can't ever remember doing so poorly, so often right out of the gate.

Hopefully, I can win some $$$ next weekend. I did well (2nd place) there last year.

Still on the Schneid.......lost several fish in tournament...a few to spit hoos and many more to line breakage.

I have since changed line - (see zebra mussell thread reference to McCoy's Mean Green Extreme Line)......

Next tournament is scheduled for July 8th - hopefully my luck will change.

Will be fishing for carp out of a canoe (no shoreline fishing allowed) - should be interesting...........

  5. This year is starting off as just about the worst year I can remember - catch wise.

    2006 totals.....

While trout fishing for a week during PA's opening season.........

1 unidentifiable minnow of some sort

1 creek chub - shortly after leaving this hole on Tionesta's Salmon Creek - a guy comes by with a 19 inch trout, which he claims to have caught in the same hole I was fishing!

    Trout = ZERO

Last year I managed to easily bypass the state limit each day. ended up sending 35+ trout home to be smoked.......

    Carp trips........

1 catfish from local county park

1 run, and snapped line during Ohio State Carp Cahmpionships

the only other two times I was out carping, I blanked on waters that are usually pretty productive.

Tionesta Creek Canoe Trip last weekend.........

    ZERO.

A friend and fellow canoeist, managed 4 small mouths and a decent perch, as well as a fish on and lost.......

Obviously I don't get out to fish as much as some of you folks, but I have never been skunked this bad in my entire life.

I'm trying to blame the weather or something, but I can't ever remember the weather playing so much of a role in my past fishing experiences.

I'll be fishing a local "multi species" tournament on the 24th, and I am hoping my luck will change.

Anybody else getting beat up this year??????

  6. The Ohio (I think) River near Pittsburgh just recently saw a 40 + lb flathead - caught by a 12 yr old boy using a minnow.

Other reports have been coming in from the "Mon" of several 20 lb and up flatheads being caught near Elizabeth PA.

I am seriously considering rigging my rods up to go after some of these fella's....

  7. Known fishery - St Lawrence - just look at the numbers and size.

Untapped - Presque Isle Bay on Lake Erie. A huge carp fishery - mostly untapped.....the potential is there.

A few days ago, the new PA state record carp was "caught" ** in the Horseshoe Pond section of Erie's Presque Isle State Park. Although still, unofficial - the beast measures 49 inches in length and weighs 54 lbs 4 oz - shattering the previouis record of 52 lbs.

An article is present in the Erie Times News - but you have to register to be able to read it (I think??)

** the fish was taken by bow and arrow (a legal means in PA, so the fish is considered the record) - If you are sensitive about bowfishing and the menatlity of people that have a disdain for carp - you will not like this article)

I do not intend to start any issues here - I'm just informing folks of the BIG FISH potential of Erie's Presque Isle Bay.

  8. I too have seen a few fish with this condition. Wasn't until just this year though, and both were caught at a local county park lake.

I know that there is a fish condition called "popeye" (I assume that's where the cartoon character got his name) - I had a "pet" Piranha that died from this, although it only had the affliction in one eye.

I wonder also, if this "bulging eye" syndrome is the precursor event that leads to carp that have no eye or eyes? (ie. does the eye eventually just pop out?)

I have a few pictures that I will try to attach from home this weekend.......

Maybe a good thread to start would be fish/carp that you have caught with disease/abnormalities.............

  9. Definitly not crapping on the city of Pitts, I have family there. But for a million dollar orginization that sucks up pretty much all the fishing money and TV time in the USA to do alot better. The WCC is a bad comparrison as it was the first time ever being held in the US, Bassmasters has been around since the 70's running tournaments.

    No offense taken Domm.

plus, B.A.S.S and related associations are partially responsible for negative opinions about carp and eradication of them in some waters. Thus my general negative opinion of the orginization.

I have to laugh at this one Domm, one of the B.A.S.S. guys, after catching a carp during the practice session, stated that it was the meanest carp he'd ever caught. So maybe our bass weren't up to snuff, but dang if our carp aren't top notch.

  10. Thanks Philly, I agree.

Personally, I don't like watching any type of fishing on TV.

Doing is much more exciting than watching (and not just fishing, either!)

At any rate, my intent was just to hype up Pgh a bit, and hopefully I have done that.

In what part of Pittsburgh did you live? I've lived in the southern suburbs my entire life.

  11. I agree with Eric, Ray Scott owns Bassmasters so his opinion is a little skewed!! I watched the footage last weekend and other than the cool look of a tourney being held in a major city it was awful. Hard fishing made it competitive but completly boring. It would be like cag holding our 1 big event in a venue that only yielded 1lbers. Big fish was under 3lbs&^%$@@#$^&*((()

Why does it have to be "spin"? Why can't you beleive that these are Ray's genuine feelings? A number of competitors have mirrored Ray's feelings as well. While it is agreed that the size of the fish were small in comparison to other B.A.S.S. championships, no one can deny the professional manner in which Pgh handled this tournament. Everything from the knowledge and courtesy of the spectators to the entire logistical set up were said to be far superior to other B.A.S.S. tournaments.

Had the tournament venue been awarded to Connecticut, would you still feel the same way?

And as far as CAG's biggest event and large fish are concerned, how many 20+lbs fish are landed at the CCC every year? Is this tournament boring or awful?

  12. This editorial was taken from the 08/09/05 Pittsburgh Post Gazette and was submitted by Ray Scott - founder of B.A.S.S.

Pittsburgh was the prize catch for this Bassmaster Classic

There were clearly two winners in the CITGO Bassmaster Classic. One was Kevin VanDam -- and the other was Pittsburgh.

As founder of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, I have been to every classic for 35 years, and I have never experienced one quite like this recent event. I have to use the word "experience" because you could feel the energy and enthusiasm everywhere. It was in the air.

Your reception as a community was overwhelming and your hospitality second to none. And that's a mouthful from an old Southern boy. Everyone I talked to was saying the same thing -- the bass pros, writers, BASS staff and out-of-towners.

There should be no apologies for the fish and the fishery. The fishing was competitively equal for all. Your fishing is coming back strongly, and everyone should look forward to better fishing in the near future.

I was awed every time I looked out on the magnificent sight of the three rivers, the bridges and the city skyline and thought about the amazing journey Pittsburgh has made from a dirty, industrial landscape with polluted rivers to a beautiful and vital city with clean, fishable waters. The word "renaissance" kept coming to mind.

Such a transformation takes courage, determination and persistence over many, many years. It reflects not only on the leadership of Pittsburgh but also on its wonderful citizens.

I want to thank you and Pittsburgh for a truly memorable Bassmaster Classic. I left a piece of my heart in your city and I will always look forward to returning.

  13. Glad to see you here, whoever you are!

Tell us more about your bio...  <_<

PS. just out of curiosity, what drove you back to the forum? The news about the WCC, maybe?

Longtime carper from just outside Pittsburgh, PA. South Park Twp (Library, PA)

former CAG member, attended several CAG fishins in past years - several in PA, Alum Creek OH, Kent Lake MI, Glimmerglass St Park near Cooperstown NY. 2001 Fish Oddysey NY.

Don't fish as often anymore - never enough time. Usually manage to make two local tournaments each year - Weston WV, and American Bridge in Pgh. Was a regular at Oil City PA, Mr Whisker's tourn (now defunct).

May try to attend some more fishins in the future, time permitting.

Used to post to forum under the name Marhoefer(2003??), got tired of reading all the bickering between people. Goes all the way back the original CAG board.

    Hopefully things have changed.

Did read up the WCC. Interesting to say the least. I saw/heard some good and bad with the whole event.

  14. Huh?

I have never even heard of an Allegan tournament of any kind..kill or otherwise...and I've fished Allegen for many years.

Rest assured, this was caught below the dam, not entered in any contest(not a big contest person), and live released about 5 seconds after that photo was taken.

There were perhaps 10 other people fishing, and I did not see a single carp kept...so if it was a tournement, and "kill only"...it was not very popular.

Again my apologies if I sounded accusatory. Like I said, no grudge held by me or anyone who attended the tournament. I was simply asking if you had caught the winning fish.

At any rate, here are some links regarding the derby...........
