  1. I just use No Roll sinkers. I buy 25pks from Catfish Connection

    25pk 1 1/2oz for $8.75

    25pk  2oz $11.95

I paint mine with Krylon or Rust-Oleum Camoflauge paint in dark green or brown, smell goes away after a couple weeks

I first wipe them of with alcohol then paint then a couple coats. I use a board with finishing nails to hold the no rolls upright for painting. Paint will chip of in time here and there giving them a mottled look.

I do just as good with the unpainted ones but think the painted ones look cool. lol

  2. A chilly morning on the river turned into a nice day. Water was gin clear and at 58 degrees.

We managed a couple personal bests, Doug caught his personal best carp and I caught my person best for that river.

We ended up with some nice carp, bait of the day was Bogger Juice and Cinnamon flavored sweetcorn.

Heres some pics of our day

  3. Finally got to go fishing again. Hit up a favorite spot armed with a couple favorite baits and a new concoction I mixed up.

It was pitifully slow but a bluebird day with carp rolling 300-400yds away for the most part and an occasional one closer to my bait.

Water was at 76 degrees and clear and everything seemed to look good. Finally after a few hours I get a run on my new mix which was Robin Red, Cayenne and Crawdad oil flavored sweet corn.  Turned out to be the only bite of the day and resulted in a decent carp. I was happy.

    Heres a couple pics

  4. I payed via paypal this morning but cant see the leader board, says I don't have permission to get the CAG Big 4 logo to print.

Figure its minor easily fixable stuff, I don't have any fish to register anyway but I do need to get things in line for when I go fishing very soon!

  5. This is a good spot me and Mush did a discovery story there several years ago. Finally getting back to that location.

Just up river of there a 44lb. carp was caught and released, weighed on a certified scale by a feller me and Mush met. We see at times carp in there that will go 30-40lbs. catching them well we try!  Mid 20's are the biggest we've got so far but we know they are in there.

Should we ever have a WV Fish In we would go to this spot since theres over 2000ft of shoreline that's all fishable.

Dougs Mirror was the treat of the day, I'm not sure who was happiest he caught a Pot-O-Mac Mirror, it was definitely a good day!

Nice session, and a very pretty mirror!  Congrats.

I miss fishing the Potomac.  I did a lot of carpin there nearly 50 years ago  from the MD side, both near Sharpsburg and across from Harpers Ferry.  Never fished the South Branch, though -- and never caught a mirror there.  BTW, where does it meet the (main) Potomac?

The South Branch of the Potomac and the North Branch of the Potomac come together near Green Spring WV from then on its just

    the Potomac River.

  7. Yesterday I met up with Doug "Dunkel" and we did a little carp fishin on the South Branch of the Pot-O-Mac River. It was a bluebird day not a cloud in the sky. The water was gin clear and we set up with using a blend of American and Euro equipment but used American baits and pick ups.

We ended up banking 12 carp, lost 2 to hook pulls. Doug caught his first ever Mirror Carp which are rare here and his second biggest carp ever a 24lb. common. Heres the pics of our better carp and our day! We had a blast!

I have fished for years next to Herkel, an ancient paylaker, those guys are all about the flavors. I am not, I think it's mostly snake oil...On ponds, lakes, rivers and massive rivers we always catch around the same...definitely if you averaged it out. There have only been two occasions when something remarkable happened, one was at an actual paylake where he had ten or more fish to my one (which wasn't much of a surprise really) and another on a flooded river where donkey choker high attract boilies (no method or pack) out fished the flavored pack and puff approach by about the same ratio.

I was just asking about Herkel at another site, sad to have heard he's not doing very good.

It has gotten difficult watching the guy right next to you catch 10 or 12 twelve fish while you catch 1 or 2.

Yea I know that feeling, when fishing with Justin he's going to catch fish even if no one else even gets a bite! LOL

Maybe skip the hair rig on a rod go with a few kernels of sweet corn directly on the hook leaving the point and barb corn free. Fish this with pack but use the pack as method. I do that a lot and it works for me. Only time I use hair rig is when I want to fish a pop up of some sort.

Then more often than not its 2 kernels of flavored maize and 1 plastic fake corn pop up. I keep my hair short too.

Add salt kosher or sea salt  to your method/pack 2-3 tablespoons full.

  10. I don't think we over think flavors at all. I have fished plain sweet corn straight out of the can on one rod and flavored sweet corn on another side by side. There is time the plain out fishes the flavored and other times the flavored out fishes the plain.

Then there is times I can't buy a bite and my buddy is hauling, I switch to his flavor and start catching. So I think its hit or miss on flavors. But I keep a log and I know what flavors produce for me when and what water temps and clarity. I know for a fact sometimes unflavored is the way and at other times if you want to catch a fish better give them a flavor they want.

Because I enjoy playing with different baits and flavors I usually take a flavor with me I haven't tried or haven't had success with and see what happens. Sometimes that's what they want sometimes not. I've bought a lot of flavorings over the years some I have thrown away some are mainstays.

I'm not saying natural unflavored isn't good because it is good but sometimes adding the right flavoring can really make a difference. Guess that's part of the fun of carp fishing experimenting with baits, flavors, naturals, rigs ect.
