Nice catch! Seem to have a lot of koi down there.
thats all we have in NZ
-
speaking of cool colours here is a small one which should grow up to be an awesome looking fish!
-
Great color
Charlie
thanks Charlie yes i think i will continue having some fun with them on light gear over the summer down here in NZ.
-
Well ive been trying out feeder fishing for Carp over the last few weeks and have had a LOT of fun on light gear Im using a 3 piece match rod with my softbait reel and 8lb berkley fireline.... I use a block end feeder with bread crumbs, corn and some cake flavouring all mixed together and a single grain of corn on a size 14 fly hook. I sit side on to the river and just look for bites then strike. Here is the best fish of the weekend which weighed in at 11lb 14oz and really put up a great fight on such a light rod

here in NZ we go out at night when the tide is low with a spotlight and a spear! it works pretty well

Hi Chris! i will have to get over to Aussie some day to finally catch a common or mirror! unfortunately we only have Koi here in NZ
-
Nice fish Simon!....the 9.5pounder is a really unique color!!

awesome stuff Jake! you are catching some nice fish man!!!
-
Before I get too jealous, do you have common carp?
`
unfortunatly its only koi down here Australia got all the variety's but we only got koi....
-
Well its winter now downunder and the fish have slowed down but we had a good period just before winter! here are some pics
This my favorite this nice 9.5lber was caught on the Waikato river near Tuakau by Harrison and its new PB
Here is his Dad with a nice 22lber!
And here is Craig our resident Zimbabwean with his new PB of 17lbs also caught at Tuakau

good old sweetcorn eh! the universal bait nice fish btw!

thanks guys what i found most interesting was i caught all the fish on popup boilies... we don't tend to use boilies here as in the past we haven't really had any success with them but these ones worked perfectly. I got given these ones by a guy i met at ngaroto a month or so ago so im not sure who makes them, ive emailed him so hopefully he will get back to me with the info.
-
Well i got up early and headed out to ngaroto this morning and this was the sight that was before me as i arrived
Today i was fishing with boilies exclusively... 1 of the 2 i was using i made and the other was a popup made in the UK. I caught all but one of the 4 fish on the popups, which was really pleasing! anyway here are the rest of the pics.
I guess this is pretty close to a ghost carp
This such a nice spot!
Another victim of the popups

yeah too many bullheads where i fish. annoying buggers!!
god i am sick of those things! and rudd for that matter! bait stripping buggers!!
-
although we have only koi here in NZ they all seem to be the bullet like shape as alot of your carp are in the US maybe its because they are totally wild fish and anglers baits dont make up a huge amount of their diet?
-
nice koi alright! the barbels give it away since hybrids dont have them and dont have the koi colours either...
-
im in the waikato region which is in the north island and we dont get snow at all here in the winter... up until a few years ago i had never even felt or seen snow in person!! It gets cold here ie down to-5 celcius but its mainly rainy or windy and sometimes some frost.
-
im thinking of doing another trip here on friday an will post a report and pics if i do...
-
Simon-
I always look forward to see your threads. There is such a variety out there when it comes to Koi. Some of them are truly beautiful. Keep on catchin!
thanks brian hopefully there will be a few more nice fish landed here in NZ before the winter.

Hi Simon
nice looking fish
they probably came as soon as you left
that lake looks like a big turtle on a google earth
did you ever try Waipa river looks big enough for some decent koi and eels
ive had that happen twice now! ive left and my mate bagged up about an hour after i left. I have had a look at the Waipa and i know there are carp in there cause ive seen them, but access to the bank is difficult and steep! however i have found a few spots and plan to give it a go this summer.

thanks jake... yeah thats a hybrid.
