  1. If y'all need info on fishing conditions in still waters, go to 'carping tutorials' and read my article 'Stillwater Stratification'.

You'll find some helpful stuff in there for year round fishing.

  2. yeah i know Robert but i just want quality gear that will last me! Thats all. Plus i only have one rod currently and am deffinately gwtting another rod by mid summer. So my next rod/reel combo will probably be a saxon and a shimano reel. But i will still keep and use my mad dragon until i dont need it anymore. I am just lookin for suggestions. Thanks though! I undertsand where you are comign from. Plus my MD is only a 3.00 TC, and i cannot get it to where i want to. I typically fish big lakes and im staryong too figure out that i need to go distance for some bigger fish to get in the channels and such on my lakes! It stinks seeing big fish activity out far where you cant reach them!

Sounds like you need a small boat with depth finder, a good 7ft rod & some float tackle. Simple enough?

  3. I fished with Bernie Haines. He had told me the biggest carp ever caught by him or his charters was 49+. According to him he never had a fifty. He stopped taking charters about five years ago and moved to the philipines. One of his friends told me he had died about a month ago

Bernie was the pioneer of fishing The Larry. I knew he went back to Texas but not the Phillipines, sorry to hear he died. I used to have the mag article of Globetrotter and pic of the fish, I'll see if I can find it. Although sad, thanks for the news of Bernie.

  4. CAG since around 1994 and finally CAG member caught 50 lbs 13 oz. Thats rare fish! More and more big carp released and we expect a few more 50's lbs will come any time!

Great Lakes, large river and large old lakes! Small unheard of old lakes is possible .... who knows. Illinois state record Carp is 51 lbs came from not known small lake near St. Louis. Old state record 42 lbs came from the Kankakee River.

Personally I think if more of us were to utilize boats on both rivers & lakes, a lot more big fish would not only be caught, but caught more often. Think about it, what could be easier or more leisurely and productive than laying-on with a float behind a boat in a river?

  5. Is this biggest carp for CAG member only? I thought that Bernie Haine caught and release 51 lbs is CAG largest carp but I cant remember what year ....late 1990's but Is Bernie member of CAG at that time?

    CCA

Bernie Haines didn't catch the 51pounder. It was caught by Globetrotter in Bernie's company on the 'The Larry' but Globetrotter wasn't a CAG member at the time. I think the weight was 51.5 lbs.

  6. Whoever said a bait should be stationary? I 've caught countless carp on a moving bait, it works so well I move my bait a few inches every 10 - 15 minutes. When you use a light-weight bait like corn or bread etc, the bait will invariably move around when a carp stands on it's head to feed. Try moving it, you might be surprised, but hang on to your rod the take can be viscious.

  7. I can't help you with the US side but I can vouch that the fishing is awesome on the upper Niagara on the Canadain side. I catch as early as march. I'm sure with a little scouting you'll be on to fish in no time. The Niagara is a well underated carp fishery in my books. Good luck!

    Scott

Its so weird to see you as a newbie when you're a '94 & I'm a '95 member. I'm glad to welcome you back mate.

  8. Yep - And apparently your drivers license also reveals your resident alien status...

Well in that case, what's the need to carry it? They were worried 'coz I was near the Mexican border, I said "lady I'm not going to Mexico or want to". She was like the typical London clippies, give 'em a uniform with a peaked cap and a machine that punches tickets, and they rule the world.

  9. The results so far are just about as I had expected, well, with the exception that SPAM or meats has gotten NO HITS...am I worng or wasn't that one of the baits of choice across the pond for years?????

I personally would not venture out without boilies, and will usually set up a rod with them, but my go to is Flavored Deer Corn or deer Corn and Tigers on the same hair, has been a killer for me in the Sumer months,,lots of good discussion on this,,,,,, I love it ! :D

    Right on Neil,

I caught my first carp in UK on Spam in 1971, well actually 2 carp, 17 & 14. Oh, the first was the 17 MIRRA. :) Spam hadn't quite got off the ground at that time, but as you say it got to be a big bait. I originally fished Spam for tench. Think it's mostly used for barbel now.

  10. Forgot,

I also like bagels (bagles - bagales - bagelas - begals)

    Phone

    Phone

I've never tried bagles, and didn't know wheaties got rock hard. I make mine on the bank, reasonbly soft so's they flake off gradually. Fish luv melting baits.

Did you use tortillas? The north Cali boys do well on them.
