yes Tal...
Nice try though!!..

Neils,
Al K never submitted his capture. I don't think he had a witness?..correct me if I'm wrong Al.
The winner of the Big Fish is Andy Dyson's 42_04 from Town Lake.
-
Bryan,
Well done..
That is some feat having Sean there to handicap you!!!.. We just taught him about hair rigs before he came to visit you!!! Your probably good for a 20+ now that he is back over here...

Probably dough baits..sweet corn. Doubt most ever heard of anything as advanced as packbaits or boilies..
Chumming was legal which I was accused of cheating for doing..
I did go with a boilie for a hour or so?..don't think I had a run so I went back to maize.
-
Paul and I may have been the only ones with Euro rods?.. We did fish at a distance which longer rods help. Many of the top ten anglers had regular tackle so having Euro gear was not a determining factor of finishing top 10.. Paul finished 1st and I finished 5th I don't think places 2nd thru 4th had anything out of the ordinary? I think doing well had more to do with tactics and knowledge then tackle...

It's a free for all type event..no rules really. Not knocking the organizers because in their defense they just haven't been exposed to an organized type of carp angling event.
They say "go!" and you run to your spot you want to fish!!!.. Watch out kids!!..
I now wish I would have video taped it so I could remember how NOT to run a carp tournament..
That said it was still fun.. There were about 10-15 people out of 300 I would consider expereinced carp anglers..the rest were just there to try their luck.
I don't think Pezalla and I were crowd favorites..I was accused of all kinds of cheating??.. But the kids liked us so it worked out OK..
I'll probably go back again time allowing..Its a decent chance at winning something..
-
Scott,
Been a while since we covered this..was a photo not required?
Thought it was same rules as CAG big fish?..keep things simple.
-
Scott,
My guess is the St Louie boyz must have a 30+?? If not give it Dave Moran..
Deano who will be joining CAG shortly and taking on the KS Chair.. Should have a KS record shortly.
-
Scott,
Why don't you post what you have for CAG members and state records? Haven't seen it in a while..
-
Jim,
Great write-up..
Really nice fish. Maybe we can get them to move the coon rapids event to this place?..
Well done and a great start to your new Chairmanship of MN..you'll do a great job.
Look forward to gettting back up that way next year and fishng again. Except this time I'm not letting Pezalla fish with me!!.. Just kidding Paul..
-
Karl,
Great looking fish..Well Done.
I take it Nigel B wasn't guiding you!!.. Is our boy still in trinadad?
If everything falls into place I hope to get back out there for a "revenge" session this winter..
-
Newt,
Part of my bad attitude towards them(besides the fact I haven't caught many that fight like carp) is I spend lots of time laying a trap for carp..baiting up, PVA bag, etc. Then along comes old Mr Channel cat and scarfs it up!!.. <_< so it tends to get me a bit frustrated.
Maybe someday we can go out and you can show me how to catch a big cat?.. If you are in Austin next spring I've seen some 20's caught there?
-
Newt,
Never hooked a 45lbs blue? Probably wouldn't mind that..
I'm referring to channel cats and that would include any channel. Had them to mid doubles and they just spin when reeling them in?.. Once in a while one will put up a fight..?
As for a gar I have tangled with a few of them and to see one 3ft long tail walk is very impressive.. But just dealing with them once they are caught is where I have issues!!.. So I imagine one like that in the picture would be mighty awesome.
-
Enriquo,
Could have a lot to do with the style of angling too? I think you guys(in buff mode) are much more alert to what your rod tips do. Setting the hook before it can happen.. as for me I'll just wait for a screaming run?
On catfish it has got to the point by the sound of the bite alarm I can tell if it's a catfish..beep-beep(line going out) beep-beep(drop-back)..
Let the cursing begin!!.. Hate those friggin' things!!..
-
Enriquo,
Nothing different then a regular semi fixed set up?.. They were probably 4-6 lbs average size fish. It did happen more times then not.. The lake was lake Hulah just north of me. I was fishing maize best I remember..?
Maybe they were mooching around on the ground bait and just sucking and blowing out all the hard food/baits?
-
Newt,
Great question...
Has to be a personal thing, where you've been, what you get your kicks from..? I expect no 2 people would answer this the same...
I grew up a hard core bass angler..fished for everything...ALL THE TIME.. except for carp.
Then one day a buddy says lets go fish for carp..so I do. A light bulb goes on over my head"Why am I not fishing for carp more?' Do it for a few years on and off but up until catching that first 20+ never was obsessed like I am now..
Caught loads of catfish??they fight terrible compared to big carp in my opinion..so therefore not interested...no matter what size. Would just a soon never have another one on my hook. Wishful thinking!!..
Grass carp?..they fight even worse then catfish and are a huge pain on the bank. ..not interested although a 40+ would be OK
Big Buffalo are tolerable??..but a 30+ lbs is OK I've had a few that fight well..but most don't seem to? Also they always seem to blow the hook out of the gills and then you have to cut the hook length to let them go??..a real pain.
Then on to the other supposed game fish I used to fish for?..well, haven't fished for any of them better part of 7 years now..don't miss any of them a bit. Do have a right good laugh watching sunday morning fishing shows and some guy holding up a 3-4 lbs bass like he accomplished something!!..
At this point for me its carp or nothing?..I've even started fishing a local pond for not so big carp??Bashed them pretty good this spring, 19_08 the biggest and they have already clued up on maize, piles of bait, etc..so that becomes a challenge in itself.

D-bones,
Reading your story sounds similiar to mine..let me warn you after you catch that first 20 you are an addict.
I loved carp fishing the first few years but after the first 20 I knew I was done. All the bass tackle went up for sale and I've thought of catching nothing else but carp for about 7-8 years now...
Welcome aboard you'll never meet a finer bunch of people then are this list..
-
MM,
See what happens when you don't go fishing enough!!..
If you would have bailed on the bird watching (or whatever you did) last week and showed to help in NY with the kids. I'm sure the kids would have loved you as much as they did Al..
-
for some reason the forum doesn't like columns??.. I spent 15 minutes lining it all up and it still puts them all together?

St Lawrence Jr Carp Tournament
in Pictures, Stories & Video
Posted
From my persective to run a tournament of this magnitude and have it go so smoothly was amazing..
CAG had several members help out for that week;
Tim Boyle
Wayne Boon
Al Kowaleski
Local members were Terry Fishlock and Jerry Laramay(American Carp Adventures)
Lots of local kids I'm told are now into carp angling in a big way.
I'm planning on helping out again next year and anyone that can serve as a Steward/Assistant or weighmaster would be great.
