Coffee, Cats, and Carp
There was a time not too long ago when I felt like I had to travel to enjoy my Carpin’ experience. Now there is a lot to be said for new places and adventure but there is also a lot to be said about fishing in your own backyard!! Lately I have come to love hosting my special guests here in our home and spending time out back. It isn’t for everyone and in fact, if you don’t like Coffee, Cats, and Carp then you would be barking on the wrong dock for sure!!
The last three days have been wonderful and my guest this week is very dear and precious to me. I first met Dan LaFavor when my Mom brought me home from the hospital. My brother “Danny” was already six years old when I first saw the light of day down in Jacksonville, Florida. I remember being an 11 year old when he married and joined the army at 17. I remember when he turned 21 and thinking that he was “over the hill.”
More recently I remember Dan retiring after 42 year in the Paper Mill Industry and not too long ago celebrating his 52nd wedding anniversary! We have always enjoyed fishing together but for the last three days we have concentrated solely on Coffee, Cats and Carp! Rain or shine we stuck to the task at hand and our efforts were rewarded with some nice fish including a nice Cat of mine an a Georgia Personal Best Carp for Dan that went a tad over 18 lbs!!
Our travel this week was limited to a cruise up the creek aboard the Carp Shark but I think you will e able to tell by the following photos that this week was really special to both of us:
Folks, travelling is fun but sometimes a world of memories can be made by simply combining Coffee, Cats and Carp!

Great to see these posts!!!

Any Carp Angler worth their grits knows that “if you chum, they will come.”With that thought in mind and with a couple of tips from a couple of lake dwellers this Ol Captain installed a “Chum Pipe” to the dock piling a couple months ago.
The pipe is a simple perforated drain pipe with holes on two sides. The pipe was lowered to about 12-16 inches off the bottom then strapped to the corner post. Once the water began to warm up I added several tea glasses of “Ol Roy” dry dog food from Walmart both early AM and at dusk in the PM. Over time the fish found the pipe and now you can even hear them sucking on the holes as the sound echoes up through the pipe:
So now when people ask “Got Carp?” I simply say….”Yes we do.”

Friends and Fellowship
It is no secret that I thoroughly enjoy God’s great outdoors. I am motivated daily to be outside to soak in each and every moment of every day that I am allowed. But where does this drive come from? Wherein lies my motivation to continue loving to fish yet never seem to grow tired of what some might call the same old routine?
Some might say that I am chasing that ever elusive Personal Best Carp. I do have a personal best and I would welcome another but that isn’t what drives me. Others say I am driven by the scenery that I am exposed to in every chapter of my journey. While scenes are wonderful that isn’t my primary motivation.
My motivation is quite simple. I am motivated by Friends and Fellowship. Over the last 15 years my world has expanded beyond my wildest imagination simply by using the Common Carp as an Uncommon Tool to connect with people from all over.
For instance, last week I spent some quality time with my friend Jerome Moisand. Jerome hails originally from Paris France, now lives in Arlington, Massachusetts and recently found himself here in Eatonton, Georgia fishing with the “Ultimate Carp Hound” and the Ol Captain.
Just yesterday I had a double dose of “F&F.” My new friend Dick Joyner fished with Max and I here on the dock a while back and yesterday we joined Dick for an early morning Catfishing cruise.
The trip yesterday wasn’t so much about the catch as it was about the boat talk and the newfriendship being formed.
I mentioned that yesterday was a double dose and I say that because shortly after returning from the Catfish Cruise Rick Denson from Douglasville arrived at the Dachshund’s Dock for lunch as well as an afternoon of Proper Pull Downs!!
I’m not going to give away his trade secrets but I will tell you that Rick set an unprecedented record yesterday by putting 12 Chunks of Solid Gold on the Dock of the Dachshund in one short afternoon!! To say that Rick’s Rod was on fire is like describing Manute Bol as being tall!!!!!!
Folks, there are many reasons to fish but at the end of the day this Ol Captain is perfectly content to continue fishing for Friends and Fellowship.

Gage and Carter vs the Big Fish!!!
As a retired educator I can assure you that I love and wholeheartedly support formal education. But (change of direction) sometime the lessons that we learn after school are the ones that we really remember!!
Our two youngest grandsons (Gage & Carter) stopped by this afternoon for a while and we had an absolute blast!!! I hope that you enjoy the photos as well as the short video!

From the Dachshund’s Dock
Although I have made several trips over the last month Ramona and I have finally and officially relocated to our new place in Eatonton, Georgia. I love our new home but to tell you the truth my favorite parts are the big fenced in yard and the “Dachshund’s Dock” that lies just outside the fence.
As you can see, Maximus Relaximus and I have been quite busy trying to get our new headquarters in order. We have gotten things set up fairly well and it looks like we have landed in an Ol Captain’s Paradise.
Max is particularly fond of the new heating pad in his box and the wonderful Oldies station that we have found on the radio.
One of the coolest things about the Dachshund’s Dock is the electric “Shark Lift” that will enable us to board and exit the Carp Shark without getting our paws wet. We have worked on Max’s perch, placed about 50 lbs of water in the bow for weight distribution and hung the control so that it will be handy as we board and exit “da Shark.”
I have caught 5 species of fish so far from the dock but the biggest so far was this Sucker:
I have also caught Channel Cats, Bream, 2 Bass and a Yellow Perch. I have been told by neighbors that once the water warms up the Ghosts of Gold will also be reporting for duty.
I have a strange feeling that I won’t be travelling quite as much this year to fish. Between the dock and the almost limitless places that we can get to from the Shark there will be no need to travel. In addition, he Wallace Dam Dock is less than 15 miles way.
We hope that you will continue to follow our tales from the Captain’s Cove as well as the Dachshund’s Dock.
Until next time, stay tuned………………..

Thanks for all the support guys!!

Although this isn’t a fish tale it is a true story. The following events occurred just yesterday to a certain Ol’ Captain who occasionally has to laugh at himself to keep from cryingThe Case of the Stolen WalletOnce upon a time there was a tall pre-senile gentleman who loved to swim. On this particular day and because of his own carelessness he had his wallet stolen at the local public pool. The man had the cops called; video cameras reviewed, filled out two official reports and cancelled 3 bank/credit cards. In so doing he probably brought a certain amount of shame and embarrassment to his beloved, loving and patient wife of over 42 years who was also seen poolside today.Later, he and several public pool officials (along with the very kind and patient Douglas County Sheriff’s officer) combed the property, showers, toilets and garbage cans in a futile search for the poor man’s prized Levi’s leatherette possession. After about an hour or so of horror and embarrassment to the poor Ol’ guy and his wife, the “stolen” wallet was finally located!!! Where was it found you might ask?Back home on the tall man’s kitchen table. The End

Thanks to all for your words of encouragement. Stay tuned!!

Once upon a time there was tall man in his early sixties. By today’s standards this man would be considered a bit old school because he loved the Lord, his lovely wife of over 42 years, and his family. The man had many friends and acquaintances. He had a zest and zeal for life in general as well as a passion for the great outdoors. In particular the man loved to fish for the often misunderstood, humble and lowly Common Carp. The tall man owned two canoes that he used to facilitate his “Carpin” habit. His favorite was a resurrected 40 plus year old 17ft aluminum canoe that had been christened the “Carp Shark.” This bulk of a heavy metal barge could carry two grown men, one dog, and additional load of Carp angling gear with ease. His smaller 11 ft 9 inch Old Town canoe was used exclusively for solo flights. The tall man simply called it “The CS TOO.” (Carp Shark also)The man had a trademark fishing companion. More times than not, he was seen accompanied in the canoe or on the bank by a little brown, aging Dachshund who he really didn’t own. In fact, the dog actually owned a very important part of the tall man. The dog owned the tall man’s heart. The man grew up fishing the salt and brackish waters surrounding his childhood home in Jacksonville, Florida. Years later, after college and marriage the man spent the next forty plus years of his life in Georgia’s Douglas and Paulding counties. These four decades were spent teaching school, being a husband, coaching middle school boy’s basketball, rearing his own children, fishing, and worshipping and serving the Lord in his local church. (Not in that particular order.)Many don’t know it but the tall man was also a dreamer. He often dreamed about one day maybe living on or near the water. He often dreamed about after retirement, having “Six Saturdays and a Sunday” each week that he could possibly pursue his piscatorial passions until his last curtain call. He also dreamed about his two youngest grandsons who might benefit from some time spent with their “Pap” who was known in some circles as the “Ol Captain.” He would lay at night just thinking how cool would it be to spend this particular time of his life teaching these two boys about Carp fishing, frog gigging, Crappie fishing and maybe even running a trot line or a few Catfish jugs. The tall man longed for a chance to one day move near his lovely daughter and her family. He hoped to maybe make a difference in their lives along with being involved in a new church and a new community as well. He also hoped to occasionally go on some Daddy-Daughter dates with his daughter periodically to just enjoy some quiet time together. The tall man knew that leaving friends and family would be tough after two score years but he still spent many sleepless nights thinking about the endless possibilities that might lie ahead. He could only imagine the “ministry” opportunities that a place such as this might hold. His dream was that the house and property might become known as a “Harbor of Rest” to all who sailed their way. His wife could entertain friends and do Bible Studies. He could do the same and temper these events with some manly time out on the dock, around a fire, or on the bank (or all of the above.)As time went by the tall man’s wishes came closer to reality. He began to dream about a specific lake house on Lake Sinclair https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Sinclair that might become available for the tall man and his wife to lease. While the man’s wife’s attention focused on the inside of the house, his thoughts drifted toward the full length porch facing the lake and the huge fenced in yard.In his mind’s eye he could see himself rocking on the porch very early on a summer morning. While there he would be found drinking coffee and perhaps reading, studying, and listening to nature’s sunrise symphony. He could only imagine himself and the love of his life sitting on the porch in the evening. Here they could sit watching and listening to the sights and sounds of the night. Here they could reflect on the day’s activities while planning more of the same for the weeks, months and hopefully years to come. He could also see his little brown four legged friend playing in the large fenced in yard or just “relaxing” in the shade or sun.Not only did the man dream about the porch and yard but his thoughts often drifted down to the dock and boat house beyond. He also dreamed about the 200 plus foot of lake frontage that was included in the package. If that were not enough, the man thought of the boat house lift where he could hoist his pride and joy of a canoe. He just knew the Carp Shark would rest perfectly in the outstretched arms of the electric lift.Well folks, occasionally dreams do come true! By the end of February if not before, Ramona and I will be leaving the Douglas/Paulding area for the first time in over forty years and we will be moving to Eatonton, Georgia! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eatonton,_GeorgiaWe will be less than 20 minutes from Lauren and her family and about the same distance from her school. We will be less than 15 miles from Wallace Dam dock and in time we hope to find a church nearby where we can serve and worship our God who has blessed us beyond measure. For those of you who might be wondering, we will only be two hours away from Chad as well as Ramona’s Mom and we will be there for them whenever we are needed. We hope that you will pray for us in this exciting time of transition and once we are settled in we want you to come see us and help us enjoy this “Harbor of Rest.”

Tony:
You add a refreshing dimension to Georgia Carp angling. So many of us think there is only one way to fish (which of course is our way) and you show us time after time that the fish are there if we would only learn how to fish properly for them in those conditions. You are a teacher both in and out of the classroom. The proof as always, is in the pudding.Good show!

Really neat Dave. Thanks for sharing!!

Well done guys!!

Only just found this. Had the pleasure of spending a day fishing with the Ol Captain and Max this year and have to say that the images portrayed on his many posts are accurate- he is a super nice guy and a tremendous advocate for our sport.
Not sure what "Champion of the Queen' award is, but as a Brit, I will make my own assumptions! Congrats Horace...You would be hard pushed to meet a nicer bloke on the river bank.
Tony
Wow. Kind words Tony. Thank you so much.

Nice!
-
Wow! I had somehow missed this! I cannot think of a better person to receive this award!
Ol Capt. congrats to you! One day we will fish together with The Ultimate Carp Hound right there with us!
That would be a fine day indeed!
