  1. Big Carp Tackle...

Definitely nice stuff, but $500 for a rod??? $250 for a bite alarm? Sheesh... looks like this is an expensive sport. (the examples are obviously on the high end of stuff they offer, but still...)

Any benefit to having a $500 rod vs. a $30 8' Shakespeare MH weight from WalMart?? I think the boat I'm planning on buying is $500!!!

The 12-13 ft rods are mainly for casting over 100 yards and for controlling fish around snags. You can find decent rods in the $70-$120 range, like the Daiwa Mad Dragon at Bass Pro, or Balzer telescopic rods at psfishing.com. Also, Resistancetackle.com has some decent alarms (RT4) for $18 that you can mount on $6 bank sticks.

Don't go the way of tarty expensive tackle, it's a slippery slope.

  2. Now that's fancy.... riding a cab to the fishing hole....

I've only fished the basin a few times, and used sweetcorn, without much nuissance from the cats. Tiger nuts also worked. I use bread around the lead, and only chum about a can of sweetcorn.

Have fun and let us know how it went.

  3. Yes Tom, the Tidal basin is open for fishing year round, 24/7. The license can purchased online here: http://ddoe.dc.gov/service/get-fishing-license or in person at one of the vendors in this list: http://ddoe.dc.gov/service/fishing-license-vendors

It's not fenced in, so access is free to the water. You may have a bit of a problem finding parking nearby. And why worry about the license, when there's no ranger to check for one?
