  1. "England suffered a heavy defeat"... "Host nation".... "competing countries".... "South Africa and France had also been unaware..."

Do these teams really represent their countries? Do they have any government mandate or endorsement, like a soccer national team at a World Cup for example? I highly doubt it, so let's call them "a team from Romania", "a team from Bulgaria", "a team from UK", etc....

I believe it was not an actual team from Romania who did the heavy pre-baiting campain, but the owners of the lake/organizers of the event, who happen to be Romanians as well. Of course the "team from Romania" got the info about the bait from the lake owners/organizers and used it.

So I see this more as a poor/unethical behaviour on the part of the owners/organizers rather than the actual anglers. They should have made the info about the bait public and available to all registered teams.... Hey, maybe the info was available but the UK and other teams didn't bother to ask!! I mean, if I'm about to compete in a fishery that is heavily managed, I'd ask beforehand: "what are you guys feeding these fish every day?"

    Just my 2 cents...

  2. And that's why "World Angling Championships" should be held on public, wild waters. Not in managed ponds or "fish tanks" where the only source of food for the fish is whatever the owner is giving them.

Eastern Europe is also famous for providing hunting grounds for rich West Europeans who come to hunt for "wild" boars. Thing is, as soon as the boars hear vehicle and human noises/commotion in the forrest, they come running towards the people, as they have been handfed corn all their lives. Ridiculous.

If sportsmanship is to be "measured" in official competitions, it should always be done on wild waters/hunting grounds.

  3. There are venues - usually public parks - where there's a sidewalk, promenade or trail right at the water's edge. Using a skypod allows you to fish over it without being in the way of the pedestrians. They can walk right under your lines.

  4. ...............lets see GUTS............by that I mean fish with nasty *ss guts lol.......
Aaaaannnddd... the carp porn was taken to a new level, moving into fetishes... Today's category: pregnant girls!

    P.S. Keep'em coming! :icon_smoking:

  5. James,

Welcome to CAG! I'm sure other local carpers (with more experience than me) will chime in, so here's a brief description of the carp scene in the capital of the USA. First, to answer your questions:

    • How much does it cost to fish the Basin and where do I need to go to purchase a ticket?
    • Fishing at the Basin is free. All you need is a yearly license for DC, that costs $10 for residents or $13 for non-residents. You can purchase it online here: http://ddoe.dc.gov/service/get-fishing-license
    • Is it a private syndicate or is it a public fishery?
    • It is public.
    • What are the average and record carp weights?
    • In the '80s, the USA fresh water record was held by a 57 lb carp from the Tidal Basin. Average size being caught is 12-16 lb, with 30+ lb fish coming out from time to time
    • Is night fishing the Basin possible and safe?
    • I never fished at night, but I believe it is possible and quite safe, as there are a lot of police cars patrolling there
    • Is the Basin a popular carp lake with fellow carp anglers I can socialise with?
    • Yes it is, in fact CAG holds a fish-in twice a year at the Basin, when lots of people come and fish together for carp. Also, throughout the year, some of us meet and fish the Basin on week-ends or summer week nights.

Now, a better location (in terms of bank space, ease of access, parking, restrooms, facilities for kids, etc) is East Potomac Park, aka Hains Point, located here: http://goo.gl/maps/67xC8. A 3.6 mile rail surrounds this island, so plenty of swims to choose from. Carp averaging 14-16 lb and plenty of 20+ and 30+ lb fish are being caught regularly from this location. One of our local CAG members caught a 45+ lb carp last year. There is rarely a week-end when you would not find at least one or two carpers fishing at Hains Point.

If you feel more adventureous, the Potomac river is a huge body of water, with plenty of wild, hard fighting carp and numerous fishing locations that will be your pleasure to scout and discover. There are also a few other good rivers and lakes within 2 hours drive from DC.

As carp tackle goes, you won't be able to find a decent local shop around DC. Therefore, the only option remains ordering it online and the best place to start would be our vendors page here. You may browse their online stores and make your own idea about the prices here.

Other than that, looking forward to meeting you here in DC. Do give us a shout-out when you arrive and we'll be more than happy to meet up on the water and give you the grand tour!
