  1. Captain, have you ever thought about compiling all these stories into a book? And call it "The Captain's Log" or something like that? I believe it would make a great read and it would get published. That way, people who only now come to meet the Ol' Captain and his crew can find all the history in one place. Just a thought...

  2. As ordered by our Sergeant Major Craig, I went out on Saturday to catch fish and represent.

We started really early, around 8 am. After dropping off our dayghter to Girlscouts camp, the Missus and I went to a nearby little park, tiny but gorgeous, with a beach, restrooms, covered shelters, benches, grills, a water hand pump, etc... A few guys were tossing lures, catching bass and snakehead. The water, weather conditions and tens of carp crushing everywhere looked promising, so I set up my pod and got rods in the water.

Twenty minutes into the day I got my first run and fought a nice, dark colored 19 pounder. As there is a rocky embankment about 10 feet wide to the water, I asked my wife to man the net and I must proudly say that she handled the job flawlessly throughout the day. Thanks, honey!

The bite was pretty steady all day long, so we managed to catch 10 more fish and lose one at the net, in hilarious way (but more about that later). Here they are, ranging from 5 to 21 pounds:

A little rain threatened us from the South at around 3 pm, but ended up going around us.

But around 7 pm, a real storm was brewing from the north, so we decided to call it a day and go pick up the kid from camp.

Now, remember the carp we lost at the net? Should I have filmed it, it would have made a good video for the AFV $10,000 prize. As I was fighting a nice 15lb bruiser and my wife was holding the net, I kinda "wrestled" the fish a bit hard and pulled the hook and the lead jumped and hit the Missus right in the head, pretty hard! Barely holding my laughs in, I said at least a hundred times "I'm sorry, honey! Sooo sorry!" But she's a real good sport and we laughed our hearts out afterwards. I feel lucky though, because there was a real chance for the hook to catch her face and then I would have had to sell all my tackle, buy her diamond earrings and give up fishing forever. :o

Overall, we had an awesome April day at a new (to us) location in NoVA, with fish to show and tales to tell. It was the most productive session in my young carping career.

  3. Happened to me once. I was fighting one fish when the second rod started screaming. I watched helplessly how the line was quickly depleting from my reel... scary! After a while, I "dragged" my first fish towards the second rod and managed to engage the front drag. Since there was at least 80 yards of line out there already, the second fish seemed content (and probably tired) to just describe arcs in the water at the end of a tight line, like a dog on a leash... I banked my first carp and then quickly moved to the second one, banked that one too and had a nice double!

Remember: Keep Calm and Carry On!

    Baitrunner reels rulz!

  4. This morning I took my neighbour's kid and went out to Hains Point, around 9:30 am. The park was closed because of the Cherry Blossom parade, but the nice officer guarding the gates told us they will reopen it around 10 am so we tossed some lures for a while until we were allowed in the park.

We camped at lot 11, put lines in the water and shortly the kid's dad showed up, so we were all shooting the breeze for some time, with nothing better to do. We sat there for 5 hours, with only one catfish breaking the monotony. Around 3 pm the kid got bored and they both bailed and went home.

But I knew that good things come to those who wait, so I kept on fishing and an hour later, I got a nice run and banked this little blind fella:

And then my lucky charm showed up! Hoppy4 and his family graced me with a "drive-by", just to say hello and check up on me. For some reason, every time I see Hoppy I catch a fish (unfortunately he cannot say the same about me and I feel sorry that this "charm" only works in one direction... ), but this time was special. Some 40 minutes later, I caught my first mirror ever! It was a beautiful 19lb fully scaled one!

So thank you Hoppy, I couldn't have done it without you!

  5. Got a couple of sessions with my daughter at Hains Point this week, spring break and all... Managed 5 fish every day, with the biggest around 24lbs.

The last fish of the day today was a surprise though...Otherwise a healthy looking, spawning 20lbs female, it looked like she got some fishing line wrapped around her "neck" a while ago and she grew thru it, suffering some really bad cuts. The gaps were so big and wide, I could stick my finger in there. I felt lucky I didn't rip her head off during the fight...

Under her chin there was something looking like a piece of braid. I cut it off, but I don't think it will make a difference.

    Ugh...

Anyway, all in all, I had quite some fun in the last few days at HP.

  6. Great write-up! These descendants of Dracula are proud to have risen to the level of importance required to make it in Craig's black book!

We had a lot of fun and my dad Ioan (which is the Romanian equivalent of John) (a.k.a. Giani, pronounced just like Johnny) asked me to convey to all the participants his gratitude for the chance to fish with dedicated carpers and learn a thing or two from them (like carp care and handling, for example). The excitement of this session will carry him thru the summer, as he's already anxious to come back in October and try his luck at American carp again!

My problem now is that he shattered my PB (of a mere 24lbs), so now I have to work hard all summer to best his. B)

  7. Hoppy, I'm hoping to offer my old man a couple more hours of good ole US of A carpin', before he goes back home on Sunday. So yes, there is a good chance we may show up on Saturday, even with the 50% chance of rain... See y'all there!

  8. I already see this: buy our "glow in the dark" boilies! (batteries not included).... What's next? Vibrating boilies, perhaps? Singing boilies...?...
