  1. Hey Andy,

Nice to hear from you, I am from Douglassville so I am real close by! I am hoping to get something nice together but no one is saying much. Worse comes to worse you and I can do some fishing!

     Sincerely,

     Nate

  2. Hello,

I am simply making this thread to get a rough estimate on how many PA carpers are still active on here. I am trying to gauge the activity in hopes of planning a small get together or "fish-in" at some point. I know I have talked about this idea before but would love to meet a bunch of guys with the same mind-set! Would just have to plan a good spot and time to do so!

Please comment below if you are from PA!

    Sincerely,

    Nate

  3. Hello Luke,

Welcome to the wonderful world of carping! I cannot directly help you with fishing the Nock because I have not spent any time carp fishing there but I will say that when the fish are in heavy spawn they do not feed. Although, with such a big lake, not all the carp spawn at exactly the same time. I have heard of people fishing the nock but do not know a lot about where they fished or what the overall structure of the population is like. Do not let it get you down, sometimes they can be a little tricky. Could have been a few factors but fishing heavy weeds is challenging and to be honest, my least favorite. Once warm water/summer hits I focus on places that lack heavy weeds.

I have fished green lane which is close and caught boatloads of little dink carp in the one cove. If you want that info please feel free to PM me. I can also point you in the right direction to some other spots, methods, and off course extend you the invite to fish with me as well.

Please feel free to get in contact with me.

    Sincerely,

    Nate

  4. Its one hour and ten minutes from me... i will talk to my buddies and let you know if we will be coming. It could possibly be 4 total if there is room. I am not for sure if we will make it though. Just saw this now... haven't been on CAG in a long while!

  5. Hooks I used in the past to now

    Korda Kurvs

    Korda Kaptor Kurvs

    Korda kaptor wide gap

    Nash Twisters

I don't buy any cheap hooks. I think it was the rig that caused the problems. What fox hooks do you recommend? I never tried them and would like to try them out also.

Ok with the heli rig you mainly put tubing (swivel and two beads )on your mainline then tie on a sinker. If a lot of pressure happens the tubing will pull apart or just pull away from the sinker. If the line snaps the hooklink with a swivel attached will be able to come off the whole setup with only the leader and hook attached to the carp. If you add a swivel above the whole rig and your line snaps above the swivel, nothing with be able to come apart. Making this rig a death rig because the fish will be dragging a lead for a long time and eventually it will die. As another person stated, if you add a splitshot above that tubing it can make it a death rig by making the rig hard to separate. Its not a bad as the swivel.

when you say "I might add a second swivel". Never add a second swivel. That will be a death rig.

With your setup. Im guessing your using a basic Carolina rig. By you adding a sinker next to your hook will NOT make it a death rig. You are fine unless you make that sinker(your main lead) fixed on your line. Which will cause the same thing I said above this.

A death rig people would use is a three way swivel with a lead attached to the one swivel , one for the mainline and the other for you leader. The mainline would snap and the fish would be dragging a sinker. (just another example) When you explain a bolt rig to a new fisherman from the united states this is the one way they will try. But this is very bad unless you add 2lb test to the sinker so it can break off, but nobody has time for that. :icon_smoking:

Korda has horrible hooks I hate to say it. Many people would agree. They break and such... to often. I like all the Fox hooks. I never had any break or anything. The best ones are the Arma Points though. SO SHARP. But I fish the Kuro's as well.

  6. I do not like Korda hooks... When I fished with them I had problems with hook pulls as well. I have never had one Fox hook bend, break, etc and they are SUPER sharp... esp the arma points.

  7. Ya'll failed to be specific as to what bait works best in spring, summer, fall,or winter conditions. Or does it even matter?? This is where the men leave the boys on the portch. Hauling year round isnt hard if you know your angling, rivers especially. Rivers are much easier than ponds/lakes year round. jmho

Tom, you are correct. I only fish in the spring/summer months though. Im to busy hunting in the fall/winter months of the year. So there was no need for me to really state. So to all who read... all my tactics I use are in spring/summer so therefore they must be good then lol. And I don't really river fish tbh just giving him some tips I know about carping in general. I lake fish mainly. And agree I think it does seem harder in a lake then in a river too.

  8. Wow! A lot of information here so I'll have to go back and read it through again, take notes, and plan. Chick peas? I put them in my salad! Since the canned ones are soft, I might try flavoring them and using them on a hair rig or bolt rig. Thanks to all!

Yes, Chickpeas!!! haha. Funny, huh? : D I never tried the canned ones before. I buy the dried ones in a small bag. I then soak them overnight and then boil them until soft enough to poke a needle through (don't remember the exact time). And then once they are cooling I throw some flavoring of choice in with them. They hold their flavoring very well IMO. If I am going to be throwing them in a mix though I do not bother flavoring them. I only flavor a few small jars for my boosted hook baits.

  9. Yeah I feel ya man. When using a hair rig I would recommend using a bolt rig. Meaning where you leave your lead fixed so when the carp pick up your hair and sucks in the hook it will aid in hooking the fish if it trys to back up or turn because the weight will not budge. Usually 2 oz or more is good for this. A tip to go by is to cast out your rods and set your drag loose and don't even watch ur rod. Don't mind the little ticks and bumps on your line and such. That could easily be the carp bumping into your line and rig. DO NOT YANK. Just let the rig do its thing.. if theres carp there youl know it by those detections in your line and such. Let the hair do its magic. Good SHARP carp hooks are the absolute best IMO. Like Fox hooks and etc... nothing compares to the sharpness of some of those carp specialty hooks and I personally wouldn't fish without them. Play around with some pack bait or method to mold around your method feeders too. Some guys use simple oats recipes, grits, and so forth. If you want to know a good recipe inbox me I will lead you in the right direction along with any other additional info you need.

Most of all be patient an keep an open mind.

    Goodluck,

    CC

  10. Carp fishing is all about location, experience, and time. Take your time to scout and look over different sections of the river. I would recommend deep holes that taper off into shallow areas with some structure. Carp love the structure. Learn how to properly tie some hair rigs and start off by using field corn for now. Pick this up at TSC or a local feed mill in a 50 lb bag for about 11 bucks or so.. I would also recommend picking up some sweet feed, horse pellets, etc. Take a big bucket and let it soak for 24 hours and boil for around 30 minutes. You can then add flavoring to it if you would like to. A good mix I use is some sweet corn... chick peas... sweetfeed... and hemp mixed together for chumming. Pick yourself up a spod to chum with. Start off by chumming that mix and then using a chick pea or whole corn on your hair. Carp fishing is very addictive and takes time. If you are having trouble with chubs the one thing I would recommend is fishing a well balanced boilie. If you have the money and time it would be an absolute go to.. .especially for those big gurls! ; ) Read up on Marios article on here about fishing with boilies it may help you a lot. As Rebelcarp said the carp lose interest in just feeding them straight maize after a while. They need something with more nutirents to keep them coming back for more and more. So if you are going to prebait I would recommend a well balanced boilie and or a mix with some pellets and such in it.

  11. I think it can be real effective if fished at the right time and place. I think a good way to look at a zig rig is using it as an interceptor method. For example, on a bright sunny warm day around noon time I tend to have less action and start to see carp "cruising" or "sunning" themselves right under the surface, or a FEW feet down. I think at this time it would be a good idea to throw a zig so you can fish where the carp are at the time. As carp move through the water column they feed on bugs and such floating around so if you mimic this you can deff catch some carp. Im sure carp hang off the bottom other times at other depths for other reasons but this is just one example I can think of that a zig rig could be effective. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the subject can fill in on this.

  12. Fox hooks for me... Love em! Btw Eagle Claws are probably the worst hook ever known to man kind. I started out with those and ive had carp break them! Not only htta they are so dull its not even funny. I wouldnt give ya a penny for a lifetime supply of them. LOL. Sorry!

  13. Dont fiddle around with that, use a hair rig. Be patient.. dont overbait. Start out simple and learn as you go. Its not easy catching carp, you wil understand what Euro Carping is all about in your future. Make sure to be quiet on the bank and try to fish at the best time of the day, either early morning or late evening/night. Try different baits.. Make sure your making a proper hair rig and your hook matches the size of the bait you are using. Ex. if fihsing maize use arodn size 6 hook. I strongly reccomend you pick up yourself some carp specalist hooks. They are no doubt the strongest and sharpest hooks out tere in my opinion and wihtout them you will miss a lot of fish. Pick yourself up some Fox Arma Points. Make sure to check your hookd every time you real in for any burs ofrf anything. Itf its not really sharp chuck it, because while using a bolt rig and a hair you wamt the sharpest hook possible because the carp are hooking themselves! I reccomend using atleasgt a 2 oz fixed lead and a short hooklink, on most occasions this is how i catch most of my carp. i could go on and on but i havtfa go!

    Goodluck,
