One must start somewhere. My wife wishes, after looking at my carp gear, that I was still starting

Ha ha, unless memory fails, the Zebco 33, Uglystick, and #4 snelled hook was what Phone used and recommended for starters and finishers alike.  Just a quirk I remembered, although what he is probably known for worldwide is his White Paper.  He had me adding brewer's yeast to boilies for the chitin for awhile.

  2. Thanks for all the responses.  I was sad to see that Neil Stern had passed as well.  Here's a memory test.. I remember that Jerome posted the first underwater video of feeding carp I ever saw, but was it Louis who purchased a live common in a grocery store and released it into the wild?  I think it might have been Miguel who offered to take dodgy teenager Oddball fishing because he lived with his grandmother and had no transport.  There's karma for that.

  3. For a long time it was the people that made it great.  The membership package was tempting at one time, but it was scaled back about the same time parts of the forum became exclusive.  Then the Ontario carpers started their own forum and US Carp Pro took some more away.  The sport was growing here and CAG was a fantastic vehicle for learners and teachers, until it changed.  Back then I wanted to drive all the way to Texas and fish in the ATC.  I can't point a finger at the leadership because they really wanted it to work, but the new structuring killed it.  At least CAG was here for me when I was learning and I'm grateful for that.

I miss Horace (and his dog Max, gone to Carphound Heaven by now), I miss Phone, and I miss seeing the pictures of monster fish Scott the Big Carphuna posted.   There were lots of wonderful people whose names I can't remember.  Oddball and Kyle Kypka would be middle-aged now.  Does anyone remember how they fought over Bush v Kerry in 2004 before either of them were old enough to vote?

There are lots of American and Canadian fishing forums but they don't have near the repository of knowledge that was once here, and they certainly won't teach the same sort of fish safety that is a big part of the sport.  UK forums have foreign sections but the North American boards which used to be a bit busy have almost no traffic.

  4. My friend called and suggested we head for the river so we met out there at about 10:30. He got there shortly before I did, and within a few minutes of my arrival I began netting his fish. This continued for the rest of the session, with him catching 6 or 7 little carp and a couple of suckers. I had one dropped run and finished with the first blank of the season under my belt. He's the man who convinced me to try carp fishing back in 2000 after I'd been ridiculing him for it for several years (Where ya goin' CARP BOY? Ya goin' CARP FISHING?). I'll net fish for him all day, any day. The best was somewhere in the 10 - 12 lb range but I've seen 30's come out of there. I'm pretty happy just to get out there.

  5. Four or five years ago I got fed up with seeing people who should know better trying to weigh carp on a scale's hook and when I tried to explain that you can't really do that to any carp over about 10 lbs without ripping their face off it wasn't very well received. My answer was to order a half dozen cheap weigh slings from England off fleabay and give them away as presents. Iirc they only cost about $5 ea but whatever it was it wasn't much. The camping airbed that leaks has a shiny side that makes a decent mat placed over a piece of foam, and a twin-size cut in half makes two so I started giving those to people I thought might use them too. Showing by example doesn't always take hold but I think it works better than just criticism.

  6. Something that struck me in the past couple of years is that when people see me fishing on the bank with my Euro gear and corn and method mix, instead of asking "what are you fishing for?" (like was ALWAYS the case a decade ago), an increasing number of people now ask "are you fishing for carp?".

There is nothing like showing by example... Even if it takes time.

Good point Jerome, I think Frank and Narda and the original CAG Yahoo! Group were one of the building blocks as well.

  7. The best cheap alarm I've used is the Ultimate Striker ls that used to be in the Royal Carp kits. If they had a sensitivity control they'd be beautiful. Miles ahead of the old Percas imo and I've found them on ebay occasionally. Like any roller alarm they aren't going to be announcing fish like Delkims but they're very durable and reliable. Unfortunately if the waves come up all you can do is turn them down.
