  1. A total of 9 Cag/Hoosier carper members got together last weekend at Lake Monroe to fish an overnight social. Everyone caught fish with the largest being a 13-8 caught by myself. We enjoyed good food and good weather with the exception of a short overnight rain. Our next social will be Oct. 11 at Lake Sylvan in Rome City, IN

Gilbert Huxley really turned on the night bite in his swim

  2. Bowfin offer an epic fight, I've caught a few on bass lures in Florida and have a very fond memory of one I caught in northern Indisna on a night crawler. I wish I knew of a nearby water where I could target them regularly.

  3. Just an update, myself and I know some others have been concerned about the possibility of Monroe being flooded. I spoke to someone at the lake office today that stated the water was high but there was plenty of open bank when they were there yesterday. I am not sure what effect today's rains will have on that so I'm hoping to get down there by Friday to scope it out. If it is flooded a suggested back up venue would be summit, but I will only change it if Monroe is completely unfishable. If anyone has any thoughts on this or more information please post up here.

  4. June 7-8 from noon to noon, we will be having our next social at Moores Creek SRA on Lake Monroe, post up here if you plan to attend. We had a good turnout and an even better time at the last social and I hope we can keep that ball rolling. Moores creek is a long stretch of sandy bank that usually produces good numbers of hard fighting fish averaging in the low-mid teens and the occasional larger fish with a mirror or two mixed in, the night bite can be phenomenal. I will be bringing my grill and some brats and dogs again, if anyone would like to contribute anything else be sure to post it below. There will be a plaque awarded to the CAG member who catches the largest fish, if you are not a CAG member and are interested in becoming one, June is a membership drive month with dues lowered to only $10 so be sure to jump on the chance to join a great club for a low price. Should be a great time and I hope to see a lot of you there!

  5. The camera I have currently has very poor self timer settings and I have difficulty getting good pics and often feel like I leave the fish on the mat for far too long when I do. I have a chub floatation sling that works great, I tend to the fish nonstop while it is in the sling making sure it isn't touching bottom, I also regularly pour a bucket of water over the sling in hopes of generating a little extra oxygen inside. So far I havent had any difficulty getting a fish to swim off strongly, or any noticeable damage to the fish, I've only ever experienced scale loss in the net. I fish primarily high traffic areas when alone and usually can get the help of a pedestrian fairly quick, most I can recall sacking a fish was 3 hours but the release went well.

  6. Yes these pics are upsetting, sure maybe a few paylakes involve themselves in illegal activities, and I agree the stocking of wild fish while legal is unquestionably immoral. But prior to my first trip to a paylake I thought that carp could only be caught by snagging and where so destructive to the ecosystem they needed to be destroyed when ever the opportunity presented itself, if I had never made that first trip to a paylake I would probably still have those uninformed beliefs. I'm sure there are many many others out there that have a similar story as mine, and it would probably not be in CAGs best interest to alienate ourselves from these anglers with harsh judgment. Educating these anglers with kind and helpful advice would probably do more good than intense criticism.

  7. Here in North Carolina Carp Paylakes are placed under the department of agriculture, hence have a whole department at the UNC with biologests on call should a paylake have problems with their fish. They take specimens of carp and water when needed, at NO Charge. Just another little fact that Noon seem to know. The mith that paylake owners and attendants in North Carolina do not care about the carp is insane. I think the ain problem with all ya'll Yankees and Euro yankees is that your only experience is with the chit holes up north they call paylakes. I too think they should be closed but hey, they give ya'll something to harp on on a regular basis.

    Tom.

You're right I have never been to a NC paylake and how you describe them they sound to be managed much differently than the local paylakes around me. Paylakes here in Indiana stock 1000's of pounds every spring and then restock through the summer, somewhere on the paylake property you can usually find a dumpster full of dead fish. I have talked to a couple of paylake owners about this and they express regret about overstocking and high fish kill rates but insist it's what their customers want and they have to do it to stay competitive.

  8. There are plenty out there for now, but ask any catfish angler that regularly fishes the ohio river and they will tell you commercial fishing has nearly destroyed a once great fishery. Michigan anglers are starting to see a decrease in trophy carp coming out of Lake Erie due to heavy commercial fishing. With no bag limits or restrictions being enforced on carp and the high mortality rate of paylake fish resulting in a never ending demand for more stocking, it is inevitable that wild waters will suffer. Just read the nacas from when this club was in its infancy, fish over 40lb seemed a regular occurrence then, now we only see a handful a year. I'm not anti paylake, I learned how to catch carp at a paylake and still go a couple times a year but I would love to see carp care improve so annual stockings could be reduced and possibly stocking farm raised fish instead.

  9. Over the weekend we had our first social of the year, we had 13 CAG members in attendence and roughly 5-6 more former members and local carpers get together at Lake Salinda in Salem Indiana. Lake Salinda was once known for its large trophy fish but it was drained way down a few years back and now is a numbers lake with the occasional large fish. We had extremely high winds and water that some described to resemble chocolate milk, but still many managed to put fish on the bank.

Heres Joey Sitarski with a pretty fish caught the night before the social that stroke a pose for the camera.

The social wrapped up with an already familiar sight on the carp scene, the old master Gilbert Huxley hoisting up the trophy. A big thanks to Jim Donlan of Westside Bait and Tackle for donating the big fish plaque and some great door prizes!

All in all I think we all had a great time out on the bank in pursuit of the Worlds Greatest Sportfish. Be sure to keep June 7/8 open on your calendars for our next social at Lake Monroe!

  10. This fish is my new PB common at 25lbs even, It was the only fish caught during a very cold session plagued with high winds and relentless bait stealing coots. I am hoping that putting this fish on the mat early on in the year is a sign of good things to come for 2014.

  11. I will be there and yes probably bivvy up the night before. I' do some baiting the day before for everyone. and also bring some drinks and other food. Dot plans on being there also. Did my first session there yesterday caught a 19, a 17 and a 7 pounder. in a late afternoon session. Let me know what areas you want baited

Hey Dick, I saw the pics from your session, looked like great fish. I appreciate the offer but I don't think prebaiting will be necessary, it's to tough to determine ahead of time where everyone is going to want to fish. I would hate for you to waste bait on a swim no one fishes, or have so many people show up that some have baited swims and some don't. Can't wait to see you down there! I really hope weather cooperates

  12. Post up here if you plan to attend the upcoming social at Lake Salinda in Salem on April 12th. There will be a plaque made for the Cag member who catches the biggest fish between 8am-6pm. I plan on bringing my grill and will have hotdogs and brats for everyone, if anyone else would like to bring anything to share post up here. I know some people plan on arriving the night before and that is great but lets all be courteous to one another, nobody likes a bank hog. Anyone is welcome to attend, and if any of you are interested in becoming a CAG member April is a membership drive month featuring lowered dues of only $10, I will have more info available on request.
