  1. Boilies will last in the freezer for a year but I would double bag them and the longer they are frozen the more chance of freezer burn.

Base mix wise you can go one of three directions:

    1) Instant Type mix - I would use equal mixtures of maize meal/corn meal, soy flour and semolina

    2) Bird food mix - get a general bird food in bulk or a millet mixture and grind this down to a powder (50-70%), round it out with soy or maize flour which will make it easier to mix.

    3) Fishmeal mix - purina aqua chow is fairly cheap but you can also use cat food biscuits (seafood mix) and again grind them down (50-70%), round out with soy or maize flour.

I wrote a series of articles on boilies in NACA, here are the links:

  2. I've used the Fox Coretex Matt for 3 years and have zero complaints. I used both the brown and green in 25lb. It is not super stiff, is easy to strip with fingernails or the teeth. The core is a supple braid. I use it with the coating on for multi-rigs and just strip off 4-5 inches of coating for other hook-links where I want a supple hinge.

The main factor for me is reliability and I've yet to have a hook-link break or let me down.

  3. Just a quick update as although it sometimes appears we are quite there is a lot of work going on in the back ground.

The Special Printed Edition has now gone to print and after speaking to the printers and mailing house I am hoping you all get your copy between Christmas and New Years.

We have some excellent reviews and articles and we increased the page count from 48 to 64, but in reality the content is similar to an online edition of 100 pages as most of the pictures are reduced in size to help with the resolution when printing.

That's not all for Q4 though!! Around mid January we will transfer the printed material to the online format and we will also have supplemental material making the content somewhere between 120-150 pages.

I already have some excellent content lined up for 2016 Q1 but as always if anyone would like to send in articles or pictures please send them to me at naca@carpanglersgroup.com

  4. Just wanted to thank Simon at Carpkit for coordinating my Big 4 prizes. They all arrived safely and I will be using some of them to make my Spring bait and some for a winter trip to catch some Buffalo's!!

Thanks for sponsoring the event and getting everything out quickly :)

  5. Looks like a great outing and some beautiful fish!!!

I am getting very frustrated trying to find a winter spot, here in NH. I have blanked the last 6-7 outings and am considering packing up the rods until spring. I have tried everywhere I can think of where they could be and have read and tried all the accepted/preferred methods. I am really looking forward to the warmer weather already.

    Jeff,

It's not really winter yet, with the current mild weather. If you are looking at river spots, I would be looking for areas off the main channel or flow with a decent depth of water. However, a common misconception is that the carp will be in the deepest water, which is not always the case. Once the water temps get below 40 degrees or so they will look for the most comfortable temperatures. This might be at 8ft in 12ft of water or 14ft in 20ft of water etc. The carp may sit in this depth for most of the day or night but will move when they decide to feed. During the day this will usually be to shallower water (as this warms up the quickest).

Once you have found the fish, the key to keeping them feeding all the way through the winter is to keep a trickle of bait going in regularly. I would start my search on the river at any bridges, behind the structures and then start to look for eddies and slack sections.

    Good luck

  6. Did you find this spot yourselves? Or did someone share it with you in the first place? You miserable old toadies...

Nice to see a few fish still coming out anyway..venturing out myself on Sunday...

I found it on myself Mark. I lived next to the river for 2 years before ever fishing for carp before I got the bug again. The spot was not a secret but only one other person I know of fished it in the winter. Like I said I rarely fish it nowadays as it's can resemble a match lake at times :) Not to worry, I have a few other winter spots to explore and a couple of trips south :)

    Good luck on Sunday.

  7. LOL, I am pretty sure I know where you guys were fishing!

I did good as well at this spot a few days ago. Brave of you to keep going while the weather is getting more challenging, and thanks for sharing the tips.

Jerome, I'm pretty sure you and about another 100 know the spot!! Unfortunately, social media posts have made this area very, very busy. This is my 6th winter fishing the area, although the last 2 winters I have fished it only a couple of times.

Not that I want the spot to myself, but it was nice when NO ONE else fished in the winter (apart from you!!) and only one or two other carpers ever fished this spot. Unfortunately, the area sees a lot of bad fishing practices with treble hooks, litter and lac of carp care being displayed. At least the carp have grown smarter which makes the fishing more challenging, which I really like :)

  8. With the weather still very mild and the air pressure dropping significantly over the last few days I was desperate to get back to my Fall area. However, work and family conspired and as I could only spare 4-5 hours I instead went to one of my favorite winter spots to see if the carp were in the mood for some food.

I arrived about 11am armed with a couple of feeder rods, a net, unhooking mat, a tackle bag and some bait. My tactics were very simple. One 9ft feeder rod, one 12ft feeder rod; both spooled with 8lb line. Both rods were made up with a 5/8 oz bomb/lead (fished paternoster style) with 2-3 foot hook-links attached to a size 12 hook. This set-up allows great bite registration with little resistance, which is important for this area as the fish are very, very aware you are fishing for them!!

Bait was also simple. Hook-baits were two grains of sweetcorn, directly onto the hook. Molded onto the bomb was a golf ball size of groundbait, which I introduced for the first hour or so to get some feed into the water. With this bait and method the key is to feed little and often, feeding a small palm full of sweetcorn and pellets every cast or 5 minutes.

As expected the first hour was fairly slow with only 3-4 fish with these being all commons like these two:

It was nice to see Dave Pickering who showed up shortly after I started fishing, and the fish were obviously feeding as he was also getting into plenty carp.

The next few hours the fishing got hotter and at times I was only fishing with one rod as the bites were fairly instant. Again, I kept feeding every 5 minutes to keep the fish active. Here's a couple of nice mirrors that came to shore:

Most of the fish were 6-8lbs but I did catch a few low doubles and my best fish of the day was also the prettiest.

    post-7695-0-49035900-1449190912_thumb.jp

As the action started to slow down I stuck to one rod and changed tactics as I was sure the fish were still feeding but very cautiously. I replaced the 5/8 oz bomb with two swan shot and instead of using a rod rest I kept the rod in my hand and touch ledgered. The result was another half dozen fish that gave only a small 'pull' but with the change in tactics I was able to connect with them.

My final tally for 5 hours fishing was around 25 fish which was lots of fun and a change of pace after targeting big fish all fall.

  9. Good points made by Larry. I think running the CCC at a location for a 2-3 year period would be much better. Maybe identify 3-4 locations that are good options and then just rotate so non of the previous years work is lost. This is how many of the World Carp Tournaments are run. If you want to introduce a new location its then relatively easy as you usually have a 2 year lead time period.

I think venues such as the St. Lawrence, Seneca, Two Rivers, Lake Michigan, DC Tidal Bowl etc. would be great as they are well known, relatively easy to get to, have a history of producing fish and have had tournaments run on them in the past.

I do echo Jerome's sentiments though; we need an Events Coordinator to oversee all of this.

  10. **Fox Tackle - Orders for 2016**
Big Carp Tackle will be placing an order for larger Fox Items in January and will be offering a 10% pre-order discount. This involves a 50% down payment and then paying the remaining 40% once the tackle arrives. If you are looking to order rods, bivvies, barrows, carp care tackle, boats, bedchairs or other large items please email me (deanabrookes@yahoo.co.uk) to place your order or ask questions.

  11. Thanks everyone. I'm very happy with the number of anglers who competed in the fall and I hope it doubles next year.

As for the fish I caught I had some good sessions with a limited amount of time and was very happy being as I hardly fished in the spring. Hopefully, I'll be able to free up some time to defend the title in the 2016 Spring Big 4.

  12. Thanks to all of the contestants who took part this year. We had 25 anglers participating with over half of these registering fish onto the leaderboard.

I write up and overview of results will be included in the upcoming NACA (Printed Q4 Edition) but below is a summary of the winners. I will be in contact with all of them by the end of the week to give them the details of the prizes they have won.

Big 2 (common and mirror combined)

    80lb 14oz Dean Brookes

  13. Wow, with Dean's latest uploads to the leaderboard, he's really starting to run away with it! Any chance we can see the full sized pics Dean? Those are some great looking fish

I'll post the pics once the competition is complete. I usually let Fox International have first pick to post them, but if I win any of the BIG 4 categories then I'll wait until the upcoming NACA where I'll include them. Still over 24 hours for people to get out and catch or post pictures onto the leaderboard

  14. Same here im confused also.... so its a big carp tackle and other sites contest not CAGs at all anymore correct? I was under the impression this was a CAG sponsored contest with prizes donated from BCT and CAG the whole time until i started seeing winners/fish that werent posted on CAG.

So for everyone with out a facebook page their entries from now on are no longer valid?

"Pictures posted on Big Carp Tackle FB original contest post are the only ones eligible for entries"

It was never a CAG contest. I devised the contest a couple of years ago and made it open to all CAG members. What happened in practice is we only had CAG members entering so when Brian took it over it was made available to more non-CAG members on the BC Tackle facebook page. It was alway's a BC Tackle sponsored contest we just partnered with CAG to make to available to more people.
