  1. sounds to me like your catching last years or the year before successful spawn, just as they get big enough to take bait, or just pulling away from the naturals that have sustained their growth so far.

I have seen that happen on a lake where the average size was always mid teen and up- then suddenly everything that was being caught was 5lbs or less and loads of them came out.

Carp grow pretty fast-, carp grow the most in the first 3 years and can be at 2-4lbs. Then they gain steady weight. I caught a 2-3lb mirror carp about 6 years ago and this spring caught the same fish at 9lbs.

Maybe a change of swim or bait might pick out some bigger ones, boilies are always worth a go this time of the year, and could separate some of the bigger fish.

Irrespective I bet you will catch bigger fish soon.

  2. As far as clarity I would not be too concerned, they will find it. Their senses are so tuned in that having coloured water will most likely help conceal your end tackle. It may indicate more of a a silty bottom which may make you want to think more about your end tackle. Maybe longer hook links, helicopter rigs or a chod rig, maybe also lighter leads.

I would focus on the location where your fishing, features and what the bottom of the lake is like. Hard, silty, debris etc.- you will get them eventually. May also be worth thinking about the bait you are using as far as time of the year.

  3. I know someone with the bfs rod hold all and they think it is great, very cheap as well. I personally always buy 13ft holdalls even for 12ft rods- you have more space either end and it leaves open the option for 13foot rods later.

  4. all of the east bay parks districts lakes have carp- and city park lakes- also the reservoirs all over the bay area- some of the park lakes are 1-2 acres which is alright for lighter gear and some of them have really nice fish- they seem to not be as badly effected by the weed, but then the delta sloughs and bigger lakes need strong enough gear to cast beyond he margin weed and ability to potentially bring in 10lbs of weed if you get one- obviously finding the fish is also a challenge- but the wind swept sides always do better on the big lakes. It really depends what your looking for.

If you want a few days where you can camp Clear Lake is a good place to catch a lot of fish- but its best to wait till the weed dies off.

It's been a bad year for weed in a lot of places so its probably worth a look before you go, , the lake I have been going to meant casting beyond the margin weed and having the rod tips pretty high and then - if you get one you have to find the carp in the weed after you land it.

I think the biggest factor with Brackish water is when they get in the current, they also seem to eat more crustacean, I have physically seem carp almost jumping on the bank chasing crawdads on a massively wide stretch of the delta while fishing.- there is a reservoir where we fish that is connected to the California aquaduct that pumps water down to LA, we fish near the opening- they can go like trains when you hook one of them all of a sudden a 15lber fights like a 40.

So on another note, I hope all you So Cal guys like drinking our bait:)

  5. I wait till I have visitors coming out from the UK - then bargain shop at Danson Angling for some deals, last year I picked up the Trakker Tundra suit for 50 quid- ebay UK is also worth a swing. The rest of the year I find BCT and CKI have me covered- when I go back to the UK I hit the carp cabin in Cambridge- I then soak up the local fisheries in that part of the country, best carp fishing in the country in that region in my opinion.
