  1. Has anyone fished here? Lots of different bank access at all the marinas, state park, etc. I have seen the owners of Anna Point hand feed common carp during the summer months at their docks, so I know they are around. It's a huge impoundment, just wondering if it would be worth the 45 minute to hour long drive if a bunch of friends and I considered doing a day (possibly camping trip) here to try and get our hands on some.

If so, can anyone recommend a good camp ground that we could throw a tent up on and have water access with?

    Thanks all.

  2. This one had a rough spawn. It's scales were beat to a pulp and it's top fin was damaged as well. I am attributing it to that as I know the spawn was the last two weeks here and all fish seemed to be post. But, I'm not an expert or anything so that can be for everyone else to judge.

Either way, I was easy with the fish and got it back in the water quickly.

  3. Went with my buddies Andy and Donny to try out the Occoquan Reservoir and braved 20 - 30mph winds all day. It paid off as we definitely hooked into some, but only one mirror showed up and got beached on a shallow bar on the way in, spitting my hook. Looked to easily beat my PB and guestimated it at a minimum of 13 but possibly 15 based on the fight and what we saw when it surfaced.

The bar proved to be a challenge as they were all hanging on the other side (backside) of it near a tapering trough near the channel. We hooked two that got off during the fight because of it, but the last one I got smart and pulled her left, letting her swim around the point before starting to retrieve in.

We got an 8lb 8oz, (Andy) a 9lb 4oz (myself) and a 12lb 3oz (myself). A baby 3lber started the day for my buddy Andy. This was my buddy Andy's first time out for carp and he is already coming back out with me tonight. He's itching for a double digit and has a great chance as we will be hitting the GW Parkway up towards DC for an overnight session. An addict is born.

Starting to get a lot more of my bass buds into carp :). They just have no idea how crazy these fights are until they hook up haha.

  4. Fishing a relatively calm spot in a local reservoir tomorrow. The contour can be seen here:

    38.742862,-77.38797 - Google Maps

It's called Bull Run Marina. Anyway, I'll be fishing the right hand side of the ramp where the island and cove are.

The issue is, there will be winds up to 20mph tomorrow at times gradually getting worse until peak at 2pm. The current normally isn't too strong in this part of the Occoquan, but between the wind and some thunderstorms (scattered) coming through tonight, I'm curious as to what approach you all would think is best as far as simple common rigs and tactics.

I will say that they started spawning in the river as of late last week and into the weekend, some are still spawning there. The reservoir should be on a very similar schedule as the temps are about the same and this is some of the shallower, warmer water the rez gets this time of year.

Lots of snags and wood around (especially to the left of the main road bridge where I can also fish.

I normally fish carolina rig style with a bottom weight and bead before the swivel or a simple sliding bullet weight. Obviously going with the bottom weight of a minimum of 1 - 1/2 ozs tomorrow, but may up to 2 depending on current.

Any better simple rigs with common tackle and gear anyone suggests? It's either this or I run a similar rig with a suicide type application and have lighter line for the bottom weight leader and the hair rig leader. I figure I may get pulled into a lot of snags if bait is drifting around a bit tomorrow.

Thoughts? This will probably be the most challenging session I've had this year, but I have a shot at a 20 + (would be my first) in this spot and some mirrors (haven't caught any yet).

  5. Wow, it's that easy lol. I knew the rig was easy enough, essentially snelling a bit and leaving over hang. And the over hand knot is simple for the hair portion.

I was just like how the heck does the bait stop stay in place??? NOW I get it.

Thanks man, I was watching all the wrong videos! What do you guys use thats laying around for bait stops? I imagine a stick would work just fine if you get a strong enough one?

  6. Hey fellas,

Gonna tie up a hair rig for the first time tomorrow. Got a needle in my tackle box so I can thread my corn onto it, or doughball or what have you.

My question is, how do these bait stops work to hold the bait in place? I will be at Dick's Sporting Goods tonight helping another buddy of mine, who is starting to learn to fish, find a basic all-purpose combo to get started with. While I am there I want to see if I can get my hands on anything that will work as a bait stop.

How do you put these on once the bait is on the hair? It seems like these guys do it instantaneously on the videos, but I don't see how they would just sit in place.

If anyone can get me some advice prior to the 5pm or so, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks all.

  7. Is it one of those reservoirs? Good shore access? Similar size? I would be down for something like that. As long as it's like within' a 10 mile radius, I'm good.

  8. Oh wow, so that's a bit steep. Don't know if the wife is gonna allow me to swing that or not...

Not even sure how I'd be able to give an excuse for that. Lol. Be one thing is a 30 + or 40+ was swimming around in there, but for what I'm seeing I doubt she's going to go for it. Will have to find a way to breach that discussion haha.

  9. Thanks for all the info gents. I do appreciate it. The session will likely have to be during the night or in the early morning hours of the fourth after the misses and the family are down to bed. I assume night fishing is allowed? Can I get a one day PA license including trout for a reasonable price? I'd love to meet some fellow CAGers up there if you are all available. If anything, this info alone is invaluable.

  10. Saw some guys bow hunting for snake heads on the Potomac the other day as I was going for carp. After some discussion with them (as they were slowly idling by) I was surprised to hear that they weren't interested in carp, which was a relief to me. I have a lot of friends who hunt, but like most said here, they all do something with the body or use it's resources. It's not like these guys are taking the carp home to eat.

I am also saddened that folks kill just for the sport of it and then don't treat the resources with the respect they deserve.

I will say that I started a FB group for the tri-state area that I am hoping to get moving along better in upcoming weeks/months so that I can hype up the sport of carp fishing in our region. With the Potomac on our doorstep we have many opportunities at trophy carp here in Northern Virginia. I only have 12 members aboard, but have already started to try and arrange some fish-ins in hopes that I will get people out enjoying this and spreading the word about how fun and addicting catching large carp can be.

I am trying to do my part.

  11. Thanks Accord. If any of you are around, maybe we can work something out where we can hook up for a small session.

Excited to hear more info. I appreciate the interest in the thread.

  12. Figured as much. Seeing as I have caught all of mine on a size 6 hook and only lost maybe 4 out of roughly 25 runs or so far, I didn't think trebles would be necessary. Will stick to the 6's and grab some 1's or 2's for the dough baits.

  13. I've seen those spring loaded ones at Walmart (super centre by me) and never knew what they were for.

So some here say yes to trebles, others don't. Is it an ethical dilemma or just different techniques and tactics for different anglers and situations? Not trying to stir stuff up. I just want to make sure if I go treble that I won't catch hear from other carpers on here or in person.

  14. Afternoon all. Just curious as to whether or not anyone here knows if there are carp inside of Lake Rowena. It is located in Ebensburg, Pa. I will be here on the holiday (July 4th) and was thinking of getting a few hours or half day on the water baring the time I have available. Is anyone familiar with the area and knowledgeable on this lake?

  15. Mc, what size and type of hook are we talking about here? Not familiar with "paylake style". In my experience I haven't needed to set the hook yet with the carp I've caught, so this is a different technique than I am used to.

Thanks for the info. Making the mix tonight when I get home. Is it better to let it sit in the fridge or in an open average temperature room since I am not using it until Friday?

  16. All,

Just curious if folks know whether or not carp are present in the following bodies of water. I'm mainly curious about commons, but if there are ghosts or mirrors that would be cool to know as well.

    Lake Woodglen

    Lake Royal

    Lake Barton

    Lake Terrapin

    Lake Crosspointe

    Marumsco Acres Lake

    Locust Shade Park

    Lake Fairfax

I'm trying to eliminate water so I know where in my area to focus and can also change it up depending on how well a given body is doing. I have no problem sharing my common spots where I have been catching either. Not looking for honey holes, just whether or not they are in there.

    Currently my main stays are:

Fort Belvoir up along the island and creek bed feeding Accotink Bay

    Huntsman Lake

The GW Parkway from Hunting Creek up to Gravely Point

Going to be giving both Bull Run a try this week and also in the near future Lake Cook.

    Thanks fellas.
