  1. Well, I miss midnight carp fishing, and this past year carp fishing in general, BUT made time to fish an hour in a favorite creek. Caught a nice channel catfish 7 minutes in, then missed a few "baby" carp (I think there's a song about it :), and then hooked this first carp of the year!!!..........and so it begins!! :) Good fishin this year!!  MO

Nice going.  It's good the streams are giving up some larger fish.  The moving water must keep those carp more active and muscular-they are long and thin.  They must put up a heck of a fight.

Yes- they never give up- very very strong. They constantly move against current, and just the physical forces make them longer as they grow. Probably close to 10 min/fish, but I'm using ultralights and 8lb test, on NGT 20gram leads with a very short hair.. Even the biggest lakers tire easily after a run or two :)..........I'm pleased as the creekers are universally 6-8lbrs-lots of fun but seldom the size. This hole is literally 30-40ft wide, probably 60-70ft long,  but deep at ~8-10'. I think they all hole up during the winter, then you can find them literally in inches of water all up and down the creek during warmer weather......... Hopefully more to follow!!!............ :)

  3. Simpler I-phone

    Open phone

    Click on camera icon/app

Click on the reverse photo icon in bottom right corner

At the top tool bar, click the timer- you have 3 seconds, 10 seconds- set your camera to 10 seconds- position yourself/camera till you like/fit in the frame

Either click the red start button at the bottom, then quickly set yourself, OR

Hold your fish- reach out with one clean finger and push the button, then position yourself and the camera takes the photo.

You will be surprised how much time is 10 seconds- you will see the timer clock down-you can set the camera to take 10 photos in sequence, or one, or continual.

                                                                                                                                        THE BEND

                                                                                                                  KIRK SUEDMEYER (MOCarper)

It was simple enough, there are so many local areas to find carp, albeit fish over 25lbs are a rarity in the creeks. No matter, a 15lbr on 8lb test and ultralight rod is just as much fun as a big “laker”…..now where to fish?                                                                                                                                               Hiking is a passion of mine- away from the hubbub, the stress of career, etc. After a close call one night with the Maybrook carp, I was able to continue my pursuit of a local, untouched, non-fished creek. Fall mornings are chilly, but on a sunny day, it can warm quickly-always better to layer the clothing!!!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   This year’s hike was very short though- parked in a strip mall and hiked past the homeless camp (unoccupied right now), to the “perfect” spot.

                                                                                    building.jpeg

I had seen this from a distance in the past (walking alongside the building) but hadn’t hiked down to it- not an easy path- though there is a paved park trail, there is  90 degree rock embankment behind a chain-link fence-that was not going to happen, so I wound my way through the multi-flora rose bushes to the creek bend and “ahhhhhhhhh” perfect!- the creek went over a spillway, creating well- oxygenated downstream ripples, and then a sharp curve, which provides some slack water- carp take a break, rest and eat, but range all over the creek. Creekers are much more powerful pound for pound than lake carp as they are constantly swimming against the current, BUT they also like to lie in the slack water, and it is here where I can reliably set my lines and catch carp within minutes.                                                                                                                                                                    This looked promising. It always amazes me that no one hikes to the creek- they will walk along it for miles, but seldom to it. It is here that I find my peace, unbothered by passers-by and finding an untouched paradise! I proceeded to set up the equipment and immediately noticed an evolutionary past and present!- A fossil brachiopod (clam) next to the modern, invasive Asian clam, a favorite of carp now……and maybe an ancestor in the past eating an equally early clam . Some things really don’t change much ?.

                                                    clam.jpegAsian clam.jpeg

I set up three rods on the pod-using ultralights WHAM a hard run!!!!!!!!- grabbing the rod, the carp swam directly upstream in the shallow water- looking much like a steelhead-it took several minutes, but I was able to land this beauty! Love it when they keep the fins erect!!! ?

                                                                            creek carp.jpeg

And just as I released the fish, ANOTHER RUN!- this time, the carp wound against a snag and was gone. I find if you let most carp run towards banks or snags, the majority turn away at the last moment-I don’t lose many this way, but you can’t have a lot of tension on the line as it turns the fish into the snag. Without bait-runners, bite alarms really don’t work reliably, so I just watch rod tips. For this area, I use a lemon-panko-creamed corn-bird seed mix.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 The fall brings challenges to creekin- many leaves, commonly from the brilliant sycamores and cottonwoods that line the banks. Rich in sugars, anthocyanines (red), and yellow carotenoids after the green chlorophyll breaks down cause the color, but also clog the creek and hit the lines, both on the surface interface and underwater, making it difficult to differentiate between fish hits and leaves.

                                                                                  leaves.jpeg

In most instances, the leaves create a slow pull, and the carp have a hard tap; mouthing the bait, and most times a short run when they hit the hook. Just a fun afternoon into the early evening AND WOW ANOTHER SCREAMING RUN!!- A little smaller but just as strong!!! Back and forth, up and down the creek, the reel screaming- exhilarating!!. A slight breeze causes the remaining leaves on the trees to applaud the accomplishment! :)

Catching carp against the golden colors and quiet solitude of a day’s creekin is simply the best! You don’t have to compete, there’s no deadlines and no expectation- but catchin does make the day!

          last carp.jpeg

I pack up my gear as the sun starts setting- the hike through the multi-flora rose seemed easier going back, probably just the euphoria of catching yet another disrespected carp in the middle of suburbia. And everyone passes them by………….except a few ????

  5. Hello!. I hope this is the correct forum- this appears to be a tragedy involving one of your members-it is entitled discovery month, and the name Kurk? Suedmeyer was scratched on it. Not sure-just hoping if it is him, that he is ok. I haven't seen anything in the media. If you find or know he's ok, please let me know!.......
