back to back 30s

Recommended Posts

I have been friends with my buddy jack for a LONG time and fishing has always been a contest between us, whether walleye, pike, ice fishing, catfishing, it was always a challenge to see who could consistently do the best. When I converted to the carp side, jack often asked me why, and recently has found out for himself. I started him out opening day weekend in Ct this year and of course he landed a 23lbr for his first fish, needless to say he's joined me on a few trips since then. We have been fishing a new spot on the Ct river for the past couple weekends with different results each trip. Some bigger fish showed last weekend and plans were set to fish monday. He asked me if I minded him bringing his soon to be step son, and his friend (visiting from upstate NY) No problem, packed a couple extra rigs and we set out on our adventure.

Brian had joined jack and I a couple times carp fishing but had yet to catch a carp. An avid fisherman, he had just finished up a catfish tournament with jack that had run from saturday night until sunday morning. I had asked them what their total weight had been, and a grumpy response of less than 7lbs made me snicker. I promised Brian a big fish. His friend Andrew from upstate NY had never caught a carp or catfish, or anything really sizeable, and to him I promised a big fish as well.

We setup shop with oat/calf manna method and stripper special mix (monster maize, chick peas and maize) Its worked for us the past couple weeks and I figured why change it up? Brian was up first landing a mid teener and it was good to get him on the board. We made sure Andrew was next, and sure enough his first carp ever, and biggest fish ever caught. I elected to fish the dead water swim directly behind us, so that the three of them had PLENTY of room. Next up was Brian again, and as I netted the fish, I knew we had the one we had been waiting for. For Brians second carp ever she weighed in at 32lbs and some change.........PRETTY FREEKIN AWESOME!

2 minutes go by and Jacks alarm goes nuts, followed by the rod AND pod headed for the water. Being a newbie, he had forgotten to turn the baitrunner on ( I doubt he'll ever forget to do that again) I was out of my chair and on the rods just before they hit the water, set the hook and handed the rod off to jack for his new pb of 31lbs 3 ozs. We made sure to get some good pictures, and release the fish to the "deadwater" side of the swim.

The bite died on the incoming tide so we decided it was time for a swim. With the renewed energy from the 2 big fish, we built a diving platform on the wing dam. It was a great time all around and reminded me of when I was a kid. The dropoff over the wall is a good 25 ft and it made for some great swimming with an almost torquise look to the bottom.

and the pictures.......

Now that is an awesome report, love seeing anglers converted to the dark side by catching big fish.

Well done!

Beautiful fish---now they will be expecting 30s all the time! :D

Nice diving platform---great way to keep the kids busy and occupied when the action slows down!

(lawyer by trade? I see you included a disclaimer about water depth? :)

Great story and thanks for sharing!

Awesome Job Ethan! way to spread the good word...with a pair of 30's!

I'd like to make a dive platform in the Hudson however my wife would be waiting for me in the driveway armed with a pressure washer :/

That's turning out to be an awesome spot you found!!

With 2 thirties that quick, there are probably more around waiting for you

The hudson?? Dirty?? What?? :)

It was so hot the other day, I "almost" considered jumping in. Didn't happen though

Yes just a year ago I was making fun of E for catching these bottom feeder fish. Now I have a pod two alarms and a 30LBer under my belt thanks alot to him. Im sure he will make me start boiling some corn soon. I am always looking to upgrade my equipment and i have a step son that loves to catch these fish also. I was always a catch and release fisherman anyway so was never looking for meat. Just looking to have some fun and land some big fish. Looking forward to going out again.

believe me I didn't want them to be 30's as I knew I'd never hear the end of it. :)

each fish we weighed twice just to make sure, tareing the scale for each weighing, pictures rarely do a fish justice.
