Holland Carp Classic = Michigan Monsters Meeting The Mat

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Been a little while since I posted up a report or story, but I am proud to have the opportunity to share a little bit about what went down these past couple days during a brand New Michigan event our event host Dave Ash dubbed "The Wooden Shoe Carp Classic".

First Off, our host Dave Ash and his wife Jenn deserve a HUGE kudos for being the tremendous good folks they are and for everything they did to make this event happen, This event is going down as one of the best events ever....period.

As most event organizers can recall, a lot of work and planning goes into making an event memorable. The additional items Dave and Jenn offered up was just a taste of what makes these 2 very special to us Michigan carpers:

They offered up their home to anybody that needed a place to crash the whole week of the event.

Dave took multiple members out different days on his boat for some Lake Michigan trolling for Salmon and came back with a whole lot of fish to share.

They provided a killer post event late lunch Pizza party..uhm uhm uhm!!

Dave and Jenn came out to Dinner a couple nights in row to share good food, a few laughs, Ice Cream and of course a couple cold ones :party0012icon:

I truly mean this when I say, Thank You Dave and Jenn :)

Ok, let me break down just some of the highlights that I can recall:

Special guest coming all the way from Ohio was none other than Mr. Rod Mills..aka Rodman. ot only did he partake in getting to know all the Michigan fellas, but he also cooked up our Saturday afternoon Lunch. That turned out to be a very tasty and special treat, I hope he can come on and explain the concoction he cooked up as that was someof the best bank food I've ever had the pleasure of devouring! Thanks for coming to see us Rod!

Our New State Chair Daniel earned himself a new knickname this weekend, going by his new name of "The Polish Hammer"

Many of us got to meet Richie, A west Michigan member that played a large part in building up the reputation of this water as a big fish water.

We got to catch up a bit with Robert whom many of us had not seen in a year or so.

The "boys" help true to their competitive form by putting on a great show and were serious contenders with taking over the title with just needing that one last fish.....nah nah nah nah nah...not this time you pin stealing, side pot winning lil devils :P

Mr. Brandon Hall not only brought along his cuter half, but a new bank buddy by the name of Remy..the cutest Dwarf Sherman Shepard many have ever seen :D

Mr. Dave unsworth took a break from golfing and vacationing to partake in this special event :P ...Good to see ya again buddy!

What else...hmmm oy yea..How about 3 new personal bests for our Michigan fellas:

1. Daniel broke his PB 2 1/2 times (another story right there  ) with a 28lb 14 ozer and then a 34 lb whopper!!!

2. Austin upped his PB to a 26lb 11oz stunning beauty

3. Brendan (Austin's lil bro) smoked his brothers PB and is welcomed to the 30lb club by landing (well after a lengthy 45 minute fight where the net man had to change shifts quite a few times :P ) a Fantastic 30 lb 4 ozer.

Something else that was pretty special to see was the teamwork, sharing and promotion everyone in this event put forth. We had hundreds of spectators throughout the 2 days with many CAG business cards and brochures being handed out. We had everyone helping with netting each others fish, picture taking, weighing, sharing what was working for baits and a whole lot of joking around.

By my rough estimate, the 10 Anglers that fished this event caught nearly 200 Quality tough scrapping fish

Guys, please post up any pics you have and add to the story with your experiences of this event.

Now let the fish porn tell the rest of this tale...bowchikawowwow:

In my opinion, this 2-day event was one of the most unique special events I have ever had the pleasure of fishing.

There was 2 prizes at stake, one for the biggest fish and one for the Biggest 3 fish. The prizes were none other than a custom engraved Wooden Shoe.

The way Dave operated this event was every participant was given 3 score cards. When you landed a fish, you had to make a choice if you were going to submit the weight of this fish or pass. Once you submitted your score cards to be on the board, you cannot change them.

Sounds easy enough, but boy let me tell ya that when you have 2 fish already submitted, you really hesitate on the 3rd fish...

The official results are in and our New State Chair "The Polish Hammer" takes home one of the 2 Wooden Shoes by weighing in the largest fish at 34 lbs. :hi501:

Yours truly took home the Big 3 Wooden Shoe with a total weight of 77 lbs 14 oz.

Something else that was real interesting was that many of us would get these short runs and quite often, we would strike into thin air and then scratch our heads...well ealrier today while fighting a hard scrapping 16ish lber the Hammer had just got her into the net and was getting ready to lift it when he said "what the %$%$" he then says dude look at this!! A bigger male (18-19lbs) had followed the female right into the net

So we concluded that the short runs we were getting were that many of these carp were in their pre-spawn play mode of the males chasing the gals around and running into our lines...

Pic of these 2 naughty fish:

Totals from the event....

I am happy to announce that everyone did catch fish. (Robert, Rich, and myself could not get into the big ones, but thats ok) Every peg caugh fish and no real peg was better than the rest.

I would like to thank everyone that came out and made this event happen. I couldn't have done this without the support of my loving wife Jenn, who did alot work to keep this going.

As for the fishing and the event... The pictures do the speaking for me. You know you had a good weekend when guys decided to release 20 plus pound fish to try and improve thier scores.

I think the highlight of the week was taking Nikki salmon fishing after I took Daniel, she complained less about reeling in the long lines. Daniel, on a nice flat day cried the entire time while brining in 350 feet of line. Nikki, on the other hand did it with ease, while fighting to stand up in 3-5 foot waves. including one that slammed the side of the boat and SOAKED the guy running the back of the boat while I drove (Sorry Ben).

After a week of fishing, and spending time with friends it is time for me to go back to class and work. I will be adding pictures and more notes as the week goes on. Now it is time for me to work on some trig homework:)

First of I will like to say thank you Dave and Jenn for taking me under your roof for the whole week without even knowing me, and for hosting the best event I ever been to. Like Andy said I broke my pb 2 1/2 times, story about that coming soon.I have meet few new friends Dave,Jenn,Robert,Rich and Ofc Rod Mill aka Rodman one of the greatest guy I have spend time on the bank witch I hope it was the first of many it was awsome meeting you all. Dave I don't know what are you talking about me crying while salmon fishing. I just said that carp fishing it a lot more interesting and I love it a lot more so get your facts straight. Andy I am happy that I lost those two nice fish because I would take both of the shoes home, because I did not know that one is for big 3, and one is for the bigest fish well I bet I did know at some point, but after fishing every day for the whole week my brain was half dead.

Congrats to all you happy carpers. So, when is the next Holland Classic?

I believe this is going to be an annual event, so May 2013 will be the next "Wooden Shoe Carp Classic".

We missed ya Bill!

No pin was at stake for this event as this was a "special event" and not one of our typical fish-ins.

Looking forward to seeing you again.
