NECC Speaker Profile

Dean Brookes

Spring Awakenings - My Approach for Big Carp

Like many UK born anglers Dean Brookes grew up fishing for a wide range of species but always found himself drawn to specimen fish. In 1990 he made the move to carp fishing, targeting mostly estate lakes in the North West of England. Over the next several years he fished many waters, including the historic 'Farmwood' which was acquired by the Carp Society and had original Leany strain fish with many over 60 years old. One of his greatest achievements was to catch a carp from Farmwood. At over 65 acres it held only 25 carp and out of 100 members that year Dean was one of only 12 who caught a fish!

As a busy soccer coach & family man Dean tends to focus on fishing 8-12 hour overnight sessions, usually about once per week, in the spring and fall. In just the last 4 years he’s caught around a 100 carp over the 30lb mark with more than a dozen of these being over the magical 40lb barrier. A remarkable achievement in the USA.

Dean’s presentation will explain how he targets these large pre-spawn carp in the spring with a focus on location, watercraft, baiting approaches, rigs and tackle together with a general overview of his own personal experiences.

Dean is a Fox International Consultant as well as an editor for Big Carp News and the North American Carp Angler

It evolved from the Carpaholics Anonymous group to become a monthly online publication in May of 2014. The magazine is a collection of articles by anglers with an array of videos, pictures, and testimonies of baits, tackle, tips and tactics of all kinds.

The magazine promotes all styles of carp angling from Pay Lake to Euro style with features from both North American and Europe. It also features the latest tackle, baits and companies from the world of carp angling.

The CAM publication is available on line and has attracted subscribers throughout the United States, Canada & Mexico and even over the pond in countries like the Netherlands, France, and Germany.

Tight lines and wet nets from all of us here at CAM. We are looking forward to meeting you at the NECC!

Phil cut his teeth on waters throughout the Darent Valley in the SE of England during the 70’s and 80’s. In addition to fishing this ‘Silicon Valley of Carp Fishing’ Phil was also “lucky enough to share bank time with some of the great carp anglers of the era including names like Savage, Ashby & Harris…” In his late teens and twenties Phil worked with notable Southern UK tackle shops to develop the iconic Conoflex range of bespoke rods for all types of angling including Carp. Now based in NY Phil is using his knowledge to catching Carp throughout Long Island and Connecticut. Fishing solo & on his first attempt Phil won the CARP Connecticut Tournament in October 2016. Phil ‘s tally of big fish includes numerous carp to over 30lb both in the UK and USA together with many specimen fish from the UK to over 75% of National record status including Barbel, Chub, Tench, Bream and Roach. Phil is as eager to learn new tactics as he is to share his own knowledge and skills with others.
