Fall Big 4 2019

Fall Big 4 2019 Image.jpg

 Competition Dates: October 1st - November 30th

These are the final and definitive rules for the CAG Fall Big 4 2019.

It is the Competitors responsibility to read and understand these rules.

Any questions about these rules must be made prior to the competition. If in doubt ask!

No changes or allowances will be made to catches or uploads that are outside of these rules.

1.     To enter the competition you must be a FULLY paid up CAG member (temporary memberships are excluded from entering) and have registered and paid your entry fee of $10.00 payable in the CAG Store for the Fall Big 4 2019 before Noon on September 30th. No entries will be accepted if your registration or payment falls beyond this date.

Please make sure that when your entry is accepted that you then register on the CAG Leaderboard. You only have to register ONCE: if you have already registered for other events, ie Big 4 or the ATC, then all you need to do is Log in and add the Fall Big 4 2019 event to your name after you have paid your entry fee. Instructions on how to use the leaderboard will be posted separately.

2.     The Competition will run from October 1st at 0:01am until midnight on November 30th 2019. All uploads must be completed by midnight on November 30th. If you have an issue whereby the upload of an entry is not accepted by the CAG Leaderboard on November 30th you must contact Willem through BIG4@JOINCAG.COM  by Midday December 1st and we will review your entry and assist you in completing the entry on the following days. No upload or messages posted with a date/time of December 1st midday or beyond will count.

3.     Upload protocol must be adhered to in order to have an entry accepted. If any requirement or detail is missing the entry will not be counted. It is the Angler’s responsibility to ensure all details are correctly entered.

4.     Only your four biggest fish of the common, mirror or leather varieties count (no grass, buffalo or other strains/breeds will be accepted). Upload the first four fish that you catch during the qualifying period. Subsequently, ONLY UPLOAD a fish if it is BIGGER than your fourth biggest fish. DO NOT UPLOAD FISH THAT ARE SMALLER THAN YOUR FOURTH BIGGEST FISH: this clogs the system and causes errors in uploads. This competition is about four big fish only not the total quantity of fish caught during the competition.

5.     Upload your entries within 48 hours of capture and certainly no more than 5 days during the period of the competition. All uploads must be completed by midday the day after the competition ends. If you have upload problems you must notify us using this email address only: big4@joincag.com

6.     Required details: Your Upload must include the following: (1)Trophy Photo of you, the captor, with the fish, the scales used to weigh the fish, the Fall Big 4 logo for 2019 clearly visible in black and white or color; (2) the exact weight of the fish in lbs and ozs; (3) the State in which the fish was caught. Please ensure you enter date and time of capture in the comments section under the photo.

Anglers must be in possession of the corresponding State Fishery License and all fish must be caught on legal rod and line methods and returned safely without harm. Please check your scales for accuracy and ensure that you properly zero the weigh sling (wetted but properly drained) before weighing your catch. Here’s a suggestion: wet your weigh sling, shake off any excess water then hang it on the scales until the water drains and the weight is stable. This usually takes less than 30 seconds. Then zero the sling on the scales and weigh the fish.

The CAG BOD reserves the right to request an angler entered in the CAG Big 4 to submit his/her scales for verification in the event of any disputes.

7.     The Fall Big 4 2019 logo will be available for download in a separate thread from the date of the opening of the Competition.

8.     Prizes will be awarded to the Anglers finishing in the first 10 places which will be determined as the aggregate of that Anglers best four fish caught within the rules and during the period of the Big 4 Competition. There will be individual prizes awarded for Biggest Common and Biggest Mirror. Additional recognition awards will be made to the captors of the four biggest fish in the 5 regional areas.

9.     Images must be clear. (See notes below). The fish, angler, scales and logo must all be in focus and clearly visible. The scales should be positioned as close as possible to the fish (scales on a tripod in the background behind the angler and fish are not acceptable). All photo images must clearly show the full width of the fish (See example below). Photos where the fish is presented at an angle (45 degrees, tail or head first etc) to the camera will not be accepted.

10.   Fish Care. Any entries that do not show proper fish handling or care will be rejected.

11.   For the first 72 hours entries will also be accepted where the CAG Fall Big 4 Logo is displayed on a cell phone or iPad/tablet or similar any of which must be clearly visible in the photo. A printed logo is valid at all times.

Some pointers and suggestions for photos.

The Big 4 Logo is only 3.75 x 2.75 inches. This is the size of many state/provincial fishing and hunting licenses. You can therefore put your logo in a standard license holder from any tackle shop, and pin it on your clothes, or even your unhooking mat. You can also print out a larger version to ensure good visibility. Enclose your logo in a zip lock bag or get it laminated to prevent it getting wet or damaged.

When taking the photo have the fish close to your body/over the thigh/knee area and over a suitable un-hooking mat. This allows you to keep proper control of the fish. The fish, angler, scales and logo must all be in focus. When taking the picture do not zoom in to just have angler and fish. Zooming in reduces the pixilation count on the photo and reduces the quality of the photo. Winners photos will be used for magazine publication and the biggest regional fish photos will be used for awards.

Example of a Big 4 Entry Photo that meets the Requirements for Rules # 9 (Photo Requirements) & #10 (Fish Care)

What’s the big deal about where the scale is or on a tripod?  A tripod is the proper way to weigh a fish.  No tripod the weight shouldn’t count period.   Really the whole weighing process should be on video!

I disagree with rule 9. "scales on a tripod in the background behind the angler and fish are not acceptable". Proper fish care is carp mesh net, weigh sling, UNHOOKING MAT, tripod, and good scale. All the aforementioned proper fish care gear should be in the CAG Big 4 rules. I don't see any sense in this new rule.

Clarification for rule 11: “For the first 72 hours, only entries will be accepted where the CAG Fall Big 4 logo is on a cell phone or similar...”

Does that mean it CANNOT be printed, on a scale for example? Why not?

No, it means after the first 72 hours only printed copies are valid. You can print it the 1st day but a lot of fishermen are on the bank asap to max out their time, so they wouldnt have access to a printer.

There is absolutely no issue in weighing the fish on a tripod. The problem is when the scales cannot be clearly seen because they are out of focus or too far away. Having the scales in the foreground or closer to the fish also helps to confirm the size of the fish.

The rule update does not stop anyone weighing the fish on a tripod.

Why aren't  unhooking mats and tripods required? Tripod gets a much more accurate weight than trying to hold a scale. Unhooking Mats protect the fish.

If you read rule #10 and the section on suggestions for taking photos it makes it clear the need for proper fish handling, mats etc.

I see no rule requiring a mat nor tripod. There maybe a vague suggestion of "proper fish handling or care". But I've never fished a tournament that did not require a mat. Tournaments I've fished also always weigh every fish on a tripod. These are basic tournament procedures. Only trying to make the Big 4 better for everyone especially the fish.

Tripods, weigh bars & weigh crooks (that screw into a landing net pole) to ensure an accurate scale reading are acceptable.

Holding the scales rather than suspending them, as above, is not acceptable.

So to the point that Clay is making. How do they prove they are in fact using a tripod, weigh bar(I use) or weight crook? Should these be included in the photo? I personaly like the system as is and lets have trust that people are honest.....right?

The question that Clay and others raised was apparently a misunderstanding of Rule #9.

This rule is not about how a fish is weighed but specifically about the need for a clear and focused photo image with the Scales and Big 4 Logo positioned in the foreground to help eliminate any questions or doubts about a reported fish weight

Yes we always rely on folk being honest in reporting the weight of the fish.

5.     Upload your entries within 48 hours of capture and certainly no more than 5 days during the period of the competition. All uploads must be completed by midday the day after the competition ends. If you have upload problems you must notify us using this email address only: big4@joincag.com

So ideally within 48 hours of capture and not more than 5 days max after capture.
